NFF Congress Approves Sep. 30 For Election

The Congress of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) at its Annual General Assembly yesterday approved September 30 as the date for the staging of the election for the new executive committee of the soccer body. The election will now take place in Benin City, Edo State.

The decision was taken after the President of NFF Amaju Pinnick had quenched the plot to impeach him by the highest-decision body of the federation.

There were fears that Pinnick could be asked to step down by the majority the Congress for gross misconduct; sources said that the decision was gaining traction in the hours leading to the commencement of the AGA but the former Chairman of Delta State Sports Commission had deployed his political sagacity to diffuse tension.

The request by the Pinnick-led board to have the election shifted by one month was also shot down by Congress but the General Assembly agreed that the election should be held on September 30 instead of 10 days earlier when the tenure of the current board is expected to terminate.

The impeachment threat was true,” a source said at the Best Western Hotel, Lagos venue of the AGA. “Pinnick did a lot last night to pacify the Congress to shelve the plan and he was told pointedly that he should allow the process to flow without interference which also foreclosed the possibility of him taking part in the election.”

Joshua, Usyk To Receive £33.2m Each For Title Rematch

Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk will each receive a guaranteed minimum of £33.2 million ($40m) for their world heavyweight championship rematch here.

This is the second highest purse ever paid to a British boxer since Joshua’s own record of $60 million for the rematch against Andy Ruiz Jr in Saudi Arabia in which he regained the WBA, IBF, and WBO titles following his first career defeat.

This weekend’s bonanza could rise close to $50 million for either Joshua or Usyk if pay-per-view television sales reach a level sufficient to justify adding a bonus for the winner.

The Saudis paid a basic $80 million to stage this Saturday night’s fight in the Jeddah Sports City’s 10,000-seat Arena.

That includes the acquisition of global broadcasting rights, which Sky Sports have purchased for $25 million for their Box Office channel.

That is likely to make the UK the biggest single source of additional revenue since the DAZN digital streaming platform, which is under-subscribed for boxing, is covering most of the rest of the world.

These numbers will be a temptation for Tyson Fury to recant his retirement once more.

The Gypsy King declared as final his decision to quit the ring on his 34th birthday last week but the WBC have given him until next Friday to think again before they declare their title vacant.

Scamacca Scores First Goal As West Ham Beat Viborg

Gianluca Scamacca scored his first West Ham goal as they beat Danish side Viborg in their Europa Conference League play-off first leg at London Stadium.

The Italy forward, a £30.5m signing from Sassuolo, was handed his first start and took just 24 minutes to make an impact when he headed in following neat play on the left from fellow new arrival Maxwel Cornet.

It set the hosts on their way to a welcome first victory this season, having lost their opening two Premier League games without scoring a goal.

Jarrod Bowen zipped a second into the bottom corner from distance with 26 minutes to go but the visitors hit back immediately through Jakob Bonde's header.

That threatened to make life uncomfortable for the Hammers until substitutes Said Benrahma and Michail Antonio combined for the latter to tap into an empty net and secure a healthy advantage going into the second leg.

That game will take place in Viborg next Thursday, with the winners joining the group stage of the competition when it begins on 8 September.

Man. United Closing In On Signing Real Madrid Midfielder Casemiro

Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro for 60m Euros (£50.7m) plus 10m Euros (£8.5m) in add ons.

Talks have progressed quickly and United are optimistic the deal for the 30-year-old Brazil international will be completed in the next few days.

Casemiro has been with Real since 2013, winning three La Liga titles and five Champions Leagues.

United are bottom of the Premier League and host Liverpool on Monday.

Casemiro would become one of the United's top earners if he completes the move and would sign a four-year contract with the option of an additional year.

After talks to sign Juventus' Adrien Rabiot collapsed over the player's demands, United have turned their attention to Casemiro as they look to address weaknesses in Erik ten Hag's midfield.

Although Casemiro has a contract that runs to 2025, Real are mindful of the scale of United's offer of a contract that could extend to 2027 once the option of an additional season is added on. They would not stand in his way if he decided to accept.

He would arrive at United on a big salary in keeping with his status as one of 30 players nominated for this year's Ballon D'Or, even if his place at Real is under threat from new arrival Aurelien Tchouameni.
