Newcastle Beat Tranmere To Progress In EFL Cup

A much-changed Newcastle United side came from behind to beat League Two club Tranmere Rovers and reach the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Buoyed from their impressive draw with Manchester City in the Premier League, Newcastle controlled the game but fell behind when Elliott Nevitt was teed up.

The hosts frustrated Newcastle before captain Jamaal Lascelles, playing on with a broken nose, made it 1-1.

Substitute Kieran Trippier's corner was headed in by Chris Wood for the winner.

Eddie Howe made 10 changes from Sunday's draw but was dealt an early blow when Emil Krafth was taken off on a stretcher, replaced by Trippier, and returned to the bench in the second half wearing a boot and with crutches.

Leeds Beat Barnsley In Yorkshire Derby To Advance

Leeds United moved into the third round of the Carabao Cup by winning a Yorkshire derby against League One side Barnsley at a packed Elland Road.

The hosts looked in control when Luis Sinisterra scored from 25 yards and Mateusz Klich converted a penalty.

But Barnsley pulled one back through Mads Andersen's diving header and then missed a spot-kick of their own as Callum Styles could only hit the post.

Klich scored again with a curling shot from 15 yards to seal Leeds' win.

Jesse Marsch's team have been drawn away to fellow Premier League Side Wolves in the next round with the tie to be played in the week commencing 7 November.

Leeds made nine changes to their starting line-up from the 11 that began the 3-0 home win over Chelsea on Sunday, although they still took the lead after 20 minutes.

Manchester United’s Bailly Joins Marseille On Loan

French side Marseille have signed Manchester United centre-back Eric Bailly on loan for the rest of the season.

The deal for the Ivory Coast defender, 28, will see Marseille cover his wages.

It includes a 6m euros (£5.07m) obligation to buy subject to appearances and the Ligue 1 club qualifying for the Champions League.

Bailly joined United for £30m from Villarreal in 2016 but struggled to hold down a first-team place.

He suffered a string of injuries, making just 45 Premier League appearances in the past five seasons.

The arrival of Raphael Varane last season and Lisandro Martinez this summer has pushed him down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

Rangers Stun PSV To Reach Champions League Groups

Rangers will play at European football's top table for the first time in more than a decade after stunning PSV Eindhoven to reach the Champions’ League group stage.

The decisive moment of an absorbing tie finally came on the hour, when Malik Tillman intercepted a PSV pass out from defence and squared for Antonio Colak to find an empty net from six yards.

The Philips Stadion went almost silent and the home side could find no response in the final half hour despite a flurry of chances.

Rangers can now look forward to drawing some of the continent's biggest names in Thursday's draw, where they join rivals Celtic in pot four as the pair play in the group stage in the same season for the first time since 2007/08.

Also vital will be the minimum £25m windfall which will now come their way as the Ibrox side complete the turnaround from playing in Scotland's third division 10 years ago to the Champions League.

The feat was achieved with a huge amount of resilience as PSV threatened throughout, and also amid the controversy surrounding striker Alfredo Morelos, who was left at home due to concerns about his attitude and fitness.

Instead, it was the man who has started in his stead all season, Colak, who was in the right place at the crucial moment to score his fifth goal in eight games after brilliant awareness from Tillman to read and shut down goalkeeper Walter Benitez's pass.
