West Ham Beat Viborg To Cruise Into Group Stage

West Ham put their poor Premier League form behind them to reach the group stage of the Europa Conference League.

The Hammers, who have lost their opening three domestic games, demolished Viborg 6-1 on aggregate in the play-off round.

Leading 3-1 from the first leg, David Moyes' side extended their lead on aggregate through Italy forward Gianluca Scamacca in Denmark.

Said Benrahma made it 2-0 on the night before Tomas Soucek added a third.

The Hammers will discover their group-stage opponents on Friday, with Moyes' side now facing six Europa Conference League games between 8 September and 3 November.

This was a welcome win for Moyes and his players, who are bottom of the Premier League table without a point or a goal.

They have lost to Manchester City, Nottingham Forest and Brighton but made easy work of seeing off Viborg, who are sixth in Denmark's top flight.

Scamacca struck at the near post from a cross for his second goal in West Ham colours since joining in a £30.5m deal from Sassuolo last month.

Algeria winger Benrahma raced onto Maxwel Cornet's forward pass to slot into the far corner to make it 2-0.

The Czech Republic midfielder Soucek struck from close range to seal an emphatic aggregate win for last season's Europa League semi-finalists.

Dele Alli Completes Move To Besiktas On Season-Long Loan

Former Tottenham star Dele Alli has joined Besiktas from Everton on a season-long loan, with an option to make the deal permanent.

Alli heads to Turkey after making two substitute appearances for Frank Lampard’s team this term in their first three Premier League games of 2022-23, while he was not named in the squad for the Toffees’ Carabao Cup win over Fleetwood Town.

The 26-year-old midfielder, who has 37 caps for England, only left the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for Goodison Park in January, but he has struggled to impress for the Merseyside club and has decided to move to Istanbul for more game time.

Alli made 13 appearances for Everton – starting just one game – and it had been reported that the Toffees would have owed Spurs £10m if he played 20 times.

Alli was a star player at Spurs in the Mauricio Pochettino era, scoring 67 goals across 269 games, but failed to hit the same heights under subsequent managers and found it harder and harder to work his way back into the team.

He averaged 22 goal contributions every season between 2015 and 2018 and helped Tottenham reach the Champions League final in 2018-19, but they were beaten by Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

In total, Alli spent seven years at Tottenham and was named in the PFA Team of the Year in both 2015-16 and 2016-17.

Djokovic Unable To Travel To New York For US Open

Novak Djokovic says he will be unable to travel to New York for the US Open, which begins on Monday.

Djokovic did not defend his Australian Open title in January because his Covid-19 vaccination status led to him being deported from the country.

Since October 2021, the United States has banned non-vaccinated visitors.

Serb Djokovic had hoped to compete, but wrote on Twitter on Thursday: "Sadly, I will not be able to travel to NY this time for US Open."

The 35-year-old won his 21st major title with victory at Wimbledon in July, leaving him one behind Rafael Nadal's all-time men's record, but will miss out on another chance to add to his tally.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) - the nation's health protection agency - had reviewed some of its rules for unvaccinated citizens in recent weeks, but Djokovic's apparent withdrawal suggests travel restrictions will continue to apply.

His absence at Flushing Meadows may benefit Spain's Nadal, who seeks a 23rd Grand Slam title, with world number one Daniil Medvedev, of Russia, looking to defend the title he won for the first time in 2021.

Newcastle Beat Tranmere To Progress In EFL Cup

A much-changed Newcastle United side came from behind to beat League Two club Tranmere Rovers and reach the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Buoyed from their impressive draw with Manchester City in the Premier League, Newcastle controlled the game but fell behind when Elliott Nevitt was teed up.

The hosts frustrated Newcastle before captain Jamaal Lascelles, playing on with a broken nose, made it 1-1.

Substitute Kieran Trippier's corner was headed in by Chris Wood for the winner.

Eddie Howe made 10 changes from Sunday's draw but was dealt an early blow when Emil Krafth was taken off on a stretcher, replaced by Trippier, and returned to the bench in the second half wearing a boot and with crutches.
