Williams Sisters Doubles Return Ends In Defeat

Serena and Venus Williams' doubles return proved short lived as they fell to a first-round defeat at the US Open.

Teaming up for the first time since 2018, and probably the last time, they lost 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 to Czechs Lucie Hradecka and Linda Noskova.

Together, the American greats have won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles.

40-year-old Serena Williams is due to retire after the tournament, while the future plans of elder sister Venus, at 42, remain unknown.

Serena plays Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round of the women's singles on Friday, but Venus was knocked out in the first round.

Opening the night session on Arthur Ashe Stadium on Thursday, the sisters failed to convert two set points on their opponents' serve at 5-4, with break points having earlier gone begging for both pairs.

Hradecka and Noskova edged the ensuing tie-break on their first set point, with 37-year-old Hradecka wrapping up proceedings with a powerful backhand down the line.

She and Noskova, 20 years her junior, went on to dominate the second set, sealing an early break. They soon held double break point for 4-0 but Noskova couldn't convert from close to the net in a slice of luck for the Williams sisters, who went on to hold and end a five-game losing streak.

The Williams sisters remain the most recent women's doubles team to hold all four major doubles titles at once with wins at Wimbledon and the US Open in 2009, followed by triumphs at the Australian Open and French Open in 2010.

Carvalho Snatches Comeback Win For Liverpool

Super-sub Fabio Carvalho sent Anfield wild by scrambling home a Liverpool winner and finally breaking Newcastle’s resolve eight minutes into stoppage time.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds had been basking in the afterglow of Saturday’s nine-goal annihilation of promoted Bournemouth as they returned to Anfield looking to secure back-to-back victories.

Liverpool managed to do just that but it took a last-gasp strike to do so as summer signing Carvalho turned home in a penalty-box melee to lift the roof off Anfield and seal a memorable 2-1 triumph.

The goal came with the clock reading 97 minutes and nine seconds after only five minutes of stoppage time were shown and tempers frayed between the benches.

While Liverpool celebrated, it was a gutting end for Newcastle given how impressive they had been in frustrating Liverpool on a night when record signing Alexander Isak had the visitors dreaming of a win.

The 22-year-old scored an emphatic first-half strike on his debut and saw the offside flag deny him another, but the Magpies still looked set to leave with a point as the hosts toiled following Roberto Firmino’s equaliser.

Arsenal Maintain Their 100% Start Against Villa To Stay Top

Arsenal maintained their 100% start to the season to stay top of the Premier League with a narrow victory over a lacklustre Aston Villa side.

The result is likely to heap more pressure on Villa boss Steven Gerrard who has seen his side lose four of their first five fixtures.

However, he could have few complaints here with his side struggling to match the hosts' intensity particularly in a one-sided first period.

Gabriel Jesus' third goal of the season was a meagre reward for Arsenal's first-half dominance with the Brazilian forward sweeping a low effort past Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez after he had fumbled Granit Xhaka's deflected shot.

And while Villa improved after the break and found an equaliser directly from Douglas Luiz's corner - as Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale protested that he was impeded by Boubacar Kamara - they were on level terms for less than three minutes.

Mikel Arteta's side, who carried the greater threat throughout went straight back on the offensive and regained their lead with Gabriel Martinelli turning in Bukayo Saka's pinpoint cross.

It means Arsenal have won their opening five league matches for the first time since the 2004-05 campaign, when they went on to finish second.

Serena Williams Beats Second Seed Anett Kontaveit In New York To Reach Third Round

Serena Williams showed she has no intention of ending her singles career without a fight after beating second seed Anett Kontaveit on another remarkable night at the US Open.

Williams, ranked 605th and turning 41 next month, won 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 6-2 to stun the Estonian in New York.

The American recently announced her intention to retire after her home major and is now into the third round.

Williams will play Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic next on Friday.

A few weeks ago, Williams announced she was "evolving away" from playing tennis in an essay for fashion magazine Vogue, but agreed after beating Montenegro's Danka Kovinic on Monday she had been vague about her exact timeline.

While lacking some of the pomp and ceremony from her opening match on Monday, this was another special atmosphere as 23-time major singles champion Williams looked to extend her storied career by at least another round.

After edging a tense opening set, the former long-time world number one suffered a dip of energy from the start of the second set as Kontaveit levelled but she recovered to win an edgy decider.

In the end, Williams handled the occasion better than her 26-year-old opponent - who looked emotional before the final game as she hid under her towel - and secured a victory that left many in an exultant crowd jumping to their feet to celebrate.
