Garcia Beats Gauff To Set Up Jabeur Semi-Final

Caroline Garcia will meet Ons Jabeur for a place in the US Open final after ending American teenager Coco Gauff's hopes in New York.

French 17th seed Garcia, produced a clinical display to reach her first major semi-final with a 6-3 6-4 victory against the 18-year-old 12th seed.

The in-form Garcia is still yet to drop a set in New York, with this her 13th successive win in a streak that included her claiming her first WTA 1000 win in five years at Cincinnati.

In only her second major quarter-final - and first since the 2017 French Open - Garcia immediately put Gauff on the back foot on Arthur Ashe Stadium and rarely relented.

Making her 42nd Grand Slam appearance, Garcia unsettled her opponent and subdued the home crowd with a fast start in which she quickly established a 4-0 lead with a second break of serve.

Contesting her first quarter-final at her home Slam, Gauff hit back in the fifth game but the damage had already been done. Garcia punched the air as she went on to clinch her first set point on serve after 45 minutes.

The teenager was bidding to become the youngest American woman to reach the last four in New York since Serena Williams did so aged 17 in 1999.

However, her task was made even tougher as she lost her serve in the opening game of the second set.

Willed on by the crowd, Gauff - set to make her top-10 debut after the tournament - saved two break points when trailing 3-1 but crucially she was unable to take an opportunity of her own in the following game.

Garcia dropped her racquet and held her hands up in disbelief as Gauff netted on the first match point to make her the first Frenchwoman to reach the last four since Amelie Mauresmo in 2006.

Kyrgios Loses To Khachanov At US Open

Australian, Nick Kyrgios is out of the US Open after eventually being out-battled by Russia's Karen Khachanov in a tense quarter-final in New York.

The 27-year-old Australian, who needed treatment on his left thigh after the first set, lost 7-5 4-6 7-5 6-7 (3-7) 6-4 to 27th seed Khachanov.

"I feel like I've let so many people down," said Kyrgios.

The world number 31 edged a tight opener when the first break point of the match went his way in the 12th game, with Kyrgios requiring treatment afterwards and saying he was struggling to walk.

But Kyrgios recovered and found top gear in the second set to level the match.

The Wimbledon runner-up continued to create chances in the third set, but grew frustrated when his forehand broke down in the ninth game and stopped him taking any of two break points.

After clattering his racquet on the court, Kyrgios was unable to forget the missed opportunities as he served.

He survived two set points in the 10th game - the first when Khachanov inexplicably whacked a poor drop-shot into the stands - but could not see off another in the 12th after the Russian's relentless returning continued to draw out errors.

Khachanov, 26, plays Norwegian fifth seed Casper Ruud, who beat 13th seed Matteo Berrettini 6-1 6-4 7-6 (7-4).

Osimhen Uncertain For Liverpool Clash

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen is a doubt for Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Liverpool.

The Nigeria international trained separately from the rest of the team on Monday morning due to a muscle issue and it poses a source of concern for Napoli, who open their Champions’ League group stage games against last season’s beaten finalists.

The Azzurri trained at Castel Volturno on Monday morning following their 2-1 win over Maurizio Sarri’s Lazio on Saturday.

Napoli are currently top of the Serie A table along with Milan, but could see their star striker Osimhen not only miss the upcoming European clash, but also Saturday’s Serie A fixture against Spezia.

“Osimhen trained separately from the team due to a muscle problem suffered in the final minutes of Lazio-Napoli,” the Partenopei said in an official statement as reported by Football Italia.

Hirving Lozano also trained separately from the group after undergoing further examination that ruled out facial fractures for the Mexico international. Lozano had been stretched off during Saturday’s match at the Stadio Olimpico. Diego Demme is also not available and trained in the gym today (Monday),” Napoli stated.

Osimhen, 23, could be a big loss against Liverpool as Napoli would take advantage of his pace against the English side’s high defensive line.

September 6, 2022 Fury Offers Joshua Chance To Fight This Year

Fury Offers Joshua Chance To Fight This Year

WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has offered Anthony Joshua the chance to fight for his belt before the end of this year.

Fury, 34, is looking for an opponent after rival Oleksandr Usyk, the WBO, WBA and IBF champion, suggested he will not return to the ring until 2023.

Joshua, who was beaten by the Ukrainian in Saudi Arabia last month, responded to Fury's challenge by saying he would be "ready in December".

Fury said in April he was retiring.

But in a video posted on social media on Monday, he said: "You've all heard that I'm going to be fighting within the next few months, and before I announce an opponent I need to do this just in case.

Fury had said he was retiring after beating Dillian Whyte in April, and also reiterated that claim just last month.

On Saturday, Fury said he would announce his next opponent next week - but confirmed it will not be Usyk.

Uysk said on Friday of a fight with Fury: "It won't happen this year, that's for sure. I'm totally healthy and don't have any injuries, but I have old traumas which have resurfaced, and which need to be treated. I will need up to two months to recuperate."
