West Ham Beat FCSB In Europa Conference League

West Ham came from behind to beat Romanian side FCSB in their Europa Conference League Group B opener.

The hosts dominated possession from the outset but fell behind in the 34th minute when Andrei Cordea scored at the far post.

Jarrod Bowen equalised after the break with a well-taken penalty after Maxwel Cornet had been fouled.

Emerson then struck from close range to make it 2-1 before Michail Antonio scored a late third.

West Ham could have added even more goals in a strong second-half showing, with Bowen, Pablo Fornals and Antonio all denied.

David Moyes' side have made a poor start to the Premier League season with just one win in six games but this was their third successive win in Europe after victories in qualifying.

Swiatek Defeats Sabalenka To Set Up US Open Final With Jabeur

World number one Iga Swiatek rallied from a set down to beat Aryna Sabalenka 3-6 6-1 6-4 and reach a first US Open final against Ons Jabeur on Saturday.

After a sluggish start, the Pole came back in the second set and overcame an early break in the decider by winning the final four games to see off the powerful Belarusian.

With the win, Swiatek became the first Polish woman to reach the US Open final, and there she will face Jabeur, who became the first North African woman of the Open era to do the same earlier in the day.

Both Swiatek and Sabalenka came out tense under the lights on Thursday but the sixth seed settled in first, finding a service rhythm and dialing in her forehand against Swiatek, who has struggled at times in the past against big hitters.

Sabalenka consolidated a break with an ace for 4-2 and captured the first set when she snuck to the net behind a huge forehand and sent a volley past the charging Swiatek.

But Swiatek, who was forced to battle back from a set down in her fourth-round match against Jule Niemeier, raised her level in the second, serving much better and breaking Sabalenka three times to level the contest.

Sabalenka responded early in the third, her confidence growing when her blistering backhand knocked her opponent backwards and onto the court as she raced out to a 2-0 lead.

But the feisty Swiatek refused to give in, breaking back with a backhand winner to level at 4-4, and advanced to her first final in Flushing Meadows when Sabalenka's backhand landed in the net.

The two-time French Open champion Swiatek will gun for her third Grand Slam title when she faces dynamic Tunisian Jabeur, who cruised to her semi-final with a straight sets win over Caroline Garcia.

Controversial Penalty Gives Sociedad Win At Man Utd

Real Sociedad ended Manchester United's four-game winning run as a controversial penalty gave them a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford in the Europa League.

Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II earlier in the evening, both sets of players wore black armbands and a minute's silence was impeccably observed by all those inside the ground ahead of kick-off.

UEFA decided it was too late to postpone the fixture but Old Trafford was understandably below full capacity and a subdued atmosphere reflected the mood of the nation. Announcements were low-key, while advertising boards were black with branding toned down.

The game's only goal was scored on 59 minutes in controversial circumstances. Lisandro Martinez, introduced as a half-time substitute, was deemed to have handled the ball in the box as he blocked a close-range David Silva shot, despite the former Manchester City midfielder's effort deflecting off the Argentine's thigh first.

Italian referee Marco Di Bello immediately awarded a penalty and after being checked by VAR, his decision stood. Brais Mendez stepped up to give Sociedad the lead, his powerful and precise spot-kick too good for David de Gea.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who was back in the United starting line-up for the first time since August 13, earlier thought he had put his side ahead, but his powerful header from a Diogo Dalot cross in the 36th minute was correctly ruled out for offside.

The 37-year-old saw two more efforts miss the target after the break before Sociedad went in front. Casemiro - making his full United debut - then had a shot from distance well saved by Alex Remiro as the hosts went in search of a late equaliser.

It didn't arrive though and Erik ten Hag, who made six changes to his team following Sunday's victory over Arsenal, loses his opening European fixture as United manager.

Arsenal Begin Europa League Campaign With Victory

Arsenal got their Europa League campaign off to a positive start with a 2-1 win over FC Zurich on Wednesday evening, with the players mourning the passing of The Queen with a minute's silence before the start of the second period.

The Gunners started slowly but gradually came into the game and took the lead at the end of a sweeping counter-attack in the 16th minute.

Fabio Vieira played the ball into space as the pace of Eddie Nketiah saw him break in behind and cross for Marquinhos to turn home an emphatic finish on his club debut.

Vieira and Granit Xhaka came close to adding a second as Arsenal began to dominate, only to concede a clumsy penalty three minutes before the break.

Nketiah was adjudged to have fouled Fidan Aliti inside the box and Mirlind Kryeziu made no mistake from the spot, sending Matt Turner the wrong way to level.

Both sets of players emerged for the second half and gathered around the centre circle to observe a minute's silence to mark the passing of Her Majesty the Queen, Elizabeth II, which was announced during half-time.

Nketiah, atoning for his earlier error, scored the deciding goal in the 62nd minute when heading home Marquinhos' cross at the back post.

The winner prompted a muted response from players on the pitch as well as manager Mikel Arteta, wearing a black armband, on the sidelines in light of the sad news from Buckingham Palace.
