Kwara United Redeem N2m Pledge To Players, Vow Immediate Bonuses

Kwara United FC has redeemed its pledge to players after their qualification for the next stage in the ongoing Total Energies CAF Confederation Cup competition.

The team defeated AS Douanes of Niger Republic 3-0 in Nigeria, and played out a goalless draw in Niamey on Sunday to scale through the competition.

Before the battle of Niamey, the team’s management, led by the Chairman, Kumbi Titiloye had promised the team a N2m cash gift if they qualified for the next round of the competition.

The General Manager of the club, Bashir Badawiy, in his message to the players at the training session, said the pledge had been redeemed, while efforts were being intensified to have the bonuses paid.

While commending the players for the qualification, he reminded them of the bigger challenges ahead, especially their next opponent, RSB Berkane of Morocco.

Also Kwara United will play the Moroccans in the first leg at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos on Oct. 9, with the return leg fixed for Oct. 15, in Morocco.

Roger Federer To Bow Out On Friday In Laver Cup Doubles

Roger Federer has confirmed the final match of his illustrious career will be in the doubles at the Laver Cup in London on Friday night.

The 20-time Grand Slam winner said last week he would retire at the team event, which starts at the 02 on Friday.

He has struggled with a knee problem and does not feel able to play singles.

"It's an event I don't want to mess with, but I know my limitations," said the 41-year-old Swiss, who hopes to pair up with old rival Rafael Nadal.

Italian Matteo Berrettini, the first alternate for the team tournament, will then take Federer's place over the weekend.

Federer's last competitive match was a defeat by Hubert Hurkacz in last year's Wimbledon quarter-finals.

Europe take on a world team in the three-day Laver Cup, where the six players from each side are usually required to play at least one singles match.

"I asked [Europe captain] Bjorn [Borg] if I could play one doubles, on Friday night, then Matteo comes in," Federer told a news conference.

"I'm nervous, I haven't played in so long."

Arsenal Women Settle For Draw After Late Ajax Equaliser

Arsenal's hopes of reaching the Women's Champions League group stage are in the balance after a late Ajax equaliser in Tuesday's qualifier first leg.

Having fought back from a goal down, Arsenal conceded late on as Netherlands international Romee Leuchter scored a tap-in to level the tie at 2-2.

Substitute Katie McCabe then had a winning goal chalked off for offside.

Jonas Eidevall's team must win in Amsterdam next week to guarantee a group stage place.

A draw would take the qualifier to extra time and potentially a penalty shootout.

Leuchter opened the scoring at Meadow Park for Ajax after 17 minutes before a Stina Blackstenius strike levelled the scores just six minutes later.

Blackstenius, who also scored in Friday's 4-0 WSL victory against Brighton, scored with a volley after Rafaelle's header rebounded off the crossbar and fell to the Swedish forward.

Following a scrappy first half for the home side, Arsenal went ahead after the break when Captain Kim Little calmly slotted home from the penalty spot after Beth Mead was fouled by Soraya Verhoeve.

Despite having the better chances, the Gunners fell foul to scrappy defending and failed to clear their lines as Leuchter claimed her second goal of the evening seven minutes from full-time.

September 21, 2022 South Africa To Bid For 2027 Women’s World Cup

South Africa To Bid For 2027 Women’s World Cup

South Africa will bid to stage the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, hoping to bring the event to Africa for the first time.

South Africa was the first – and so far only – country on the continent to host the men’s World Cup, in 2010.

In July, South Africa became African champions for the first time after beating hosts Morocco in the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Rabat.

Almost two years ago Netherlands, Belgium and Germany launched a joint bid for the 2027 competition, and that will be among the South African proposal’s principle rivals.

A joint Scandinavian bid has also been floated, but with Denmark, Norway, Finland and Sweden bidding together to host the 2025 European Championship, the continental tournament could take precedence.

Meanwhile, the United States has also indicated a desire to bid for either the 2027 or 2031 World Cups.

Next year’s tournament in Australia and New Zealand will be the first finals with 32 teams, an increase of eight teams from France 2019.

It will also leave Africa and South America as the only populated continents never to have staged the Women’s World Cup.

SAFA had been in the running for the 2023 World Cup but pulled out, claiming it wanted to focus on developing the women’s national league.

South Africa’s women’s side, Banyana Banyana, went out in the group stage on their first appearance at the World Cup in 2019.
