Neymar Faces 5-Year Jail Term Over Transfer To Barcelona

A Brazilian investment firm has called for Neymar to be handed a five-year prison sentence when he stands trial next week on fraud and corruption charges relating to his transfer to Barcelona from Santos in 2013.

DIS, which owned 40% of the rights to Brazil forward at the time, argues it lost out because the transfer fee was undervalued.

The 30-year-old forward who currently plays for PSG has denied the allegations but lost an appeal in Spain's High Court in 2017, leading to the trial being brought by Spanish prosecutors.

The Paris St-Germain forward will have to appear in person for the first day of the trial in Barcelona on Monday, the court said, but it is unclear if he will be asked to stay for the entire hearing which could last two weeks.

The other defendants are Neymar's parents, the two clubs, former Barcelona presidents Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell, and former Santos president Odilio Rodrigues.

Rosell has also previously denied any wrongdoing.

In a statement, Baker McKenzie, the lawyers representing the Neymar family, claimed that Spanish courts "lack jurisdiction to prosecute the Neymar family and their company N&N" because the acts were committed by Brazilian nationals outside Spanish territory.

They also pointed out that the alleged crimes are not punishable in Brazil.

DIS acquired a percentage of Neymar's rights when he was 17, in exchange for 2m euros.

Barcelona said at the time of Neymar's move that the transfer fee was 57.1m euros, of which 40m euros was paid to his family.

The investment firm received a 40% share of the remaining 17.1m euros that was paid to Brazilian club Santos.

As well as the five-year jail term demand, DIS is also requesting prison sentences for Rosell and Bartomeu, and a 149m euro fine.

Spanish prosecutors are demanding for a two-year prison term for Neymar and the payment of a 10m euros fine and a five-year jail term for Rosell, plus an 8.4m euro fine for Barcelona.

‘The Champions League Is Cruel To Us’- Barca On The Brink Of Exit

Barcelona is on the verge of a second consecutive Champions League group-stage exit after being held to a stalemate by Inter Milan in a tense and high-octane contest at the Nou Camp.

After being defeated in the San Siro the previous week, Xavi's side headed into the game knowing that they needed to win to have any chance of moving from Group C, with teams on the same points divided by their head-to-head record.

Inter, who are second in the table behind Bayern Munich, who advanced on Wednesday, are now three points ahead of Barcelona, with both teams having to face Bayern and Viktoria Plzen.

Barcelona boss Xavi said: "We're depending on another team to go through. They are our mistakes, we have to improve them. That's the reality. The [improvement] process is longer than we thought in Europe.

"There are other competitions, La Liga, the Copa del Rey, the Super Copa. We have to insist, persist, and believe.

"When you draw at home with these fans, with this atmosphere, it is my fault. I am angry. My feeling is that this competition has been, and is still being, cruel to us."

No Ranking Points Available For LIV Golfers Says Owgr

LIV Golf players will be unable to earn world ranking points at upcoming events in Bangkok and Jeddah, Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) has said.

LIV Golf said on Wednesday that it had agreed a "strategic alliance" with the Middle East and Africa (Mena) Tour to allow its players to earn points.

But OWGR says it received insufficient notice to conduct a review before the series' upcoming October events.

The OWGR has confirmed that a review of the changes to the Mena Tour is now under way.

An OWGR statement said the communication from the Mena Tour "detailed significant changes" to its membership structure, as well as an outline of the initial series of tournaments in the 2022-23 season.

It added: "Notice of these changes given by the Mena Tour is insufficient to allow OWGR to conduct the customary necessary review ahead of the LIV Golf Invitational Bangkok and LIV Golf Invitational Jeddah.

LIV Golf is not currently recognised by OWGR, meaning players risk falling down the rankings and missing out on entry to the majors.

All LIV Golf players have joined the Mena Tour, which has been inactive since the start of the global pandemic, as part of the agreement.

The Saudi-backed LIV Golf will hold Invitational events in Bangkok from 7-9 October and Jeddah from 14-16 October.
