December 9, 2022 Brittney Griner Released By Russia In 1-For-1 Prisoner Swap For Arms Dealer Viktor Bout

Brittney Griner Released By Russia In 1-For-1 Prisoner Swap For Arms Dealer Viktor Bout

Brittney Griner, the WNBA star who was held for months in Russian prisons on drug charges, was released Thursday in a one-for-one prisoner swap for international arms dealer Victor Bout, bringing an end to an ordeal that sparked intense high-level negotiations between the U.S. and the Kremlin to secure her freedom.

"She's safe. She's on a plane. She's on her way home," President Biden said at the White House, announcing the exchange. "After months of being unjustly detained in Russia, held under intolerable circumstances, Brittney will soon be back in the arms of her loved ones and she should have been there all along. This is a day we've worked toward for a long time. We never stopped pushing for her release."

Griner was expected to land in San Antonio, Texas early Friday.

CBS News was first to report the swap, which took place in the United Arab Emirates, citing a U.S. official. The exchange agreement negotiated with Moscow in recent weeks was given final approval by Mr. Biden within just the last week, according to sources familiar with the deal.

Five former U.S. officials told CBS News the agreement had been reached as of last Thursday.

The president said he spoke to Griner by phone from the Oval Office, where he was joined by Griner's wife Cherelle, Vice President Kamala Harris and Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Per standard procedure for freed U.S. prisoners, Griner was expected to quickly undergo a medical evaluation.

Former U21 Coach Luis De La Fuente Becomes New Spanish Manager

The RFEF announced earlier on Thursday that Luis Enrique would not carry on in the role after the World Cup elimination to Morocco in the last 16.

A separate statement then confirmed that U21 coach De la Fuente would replace him.

Luis Enrique took over in 2018 after Julen Lopetegui left for Real Madrid and led Spain to the semifinals at Euro 2020, losing to eventual winners Italy.

At this year's World Cup in Qatar he helped Spain out of the group, with Germany knocked out in the process, but then lost on penalties to Morocco.

With his contract expiring this month, the RFEF said the decision had been made to start a new project with a new person in charge.

De la Fuente, 61, has been coaching Spanish youth teams since 2013, working first with the U19s before taking the U21 post in 2018.

He also took charge of an U23 side at the Olympics in Tokyo last summer, losing to Brazil in the final to win a silver medal.

In that role, as well as his position with the U21s, he has worked with a number of the players currently involved with the Spain senior side, including the likes of Pedri, Ansu Fati and Alejandro Balde.

Born in Haro, La Rioja, de la Fuente graduated from Athletic Bilbao's youth system, and made his senior debut with the reserves in 1978, in Segunda División B. On 8 March 1981 he made his first-team – and La Liga – debut. In July 1987, de la Fuente moved to fellow league club Sevilla FC. De la Fuente joined Deportivo Alavés in 1993, with the side in the third tier. After one season, he retired at the age of 33.

De la Fuente's first managerial job was at Club Portugalete, in the regional leagues. In summer 2000 he was appointed at Segunda División B club CD Aurrerá de Vitoria, but was sacked in March. After a spell back at Sevilla, de la Fuente returned to Athletic. Initially a manager of the reserves. On 13 July 2011, de la Fuente was named Alavés coach, being dismissed on 17 October. On 5 May 2013 he was appointed at the helm of the Spain under-19 team, who won the 2015 UEFA European Championship in Greece. De la Fuente became manager of the under-21 side in July 2018.

De la Fuente was also in charge of the Spanish Olympic team at the delayed 2020 games in Japan. His side won the silver medal, losing 2–1 to Brazil in the final.

Spain Sack Luis Enrique After World Cup Failure

Spain sacked coach Luis Enrique on Thursday after the 2010 champions were dumped out of the World Cup by Morocco at the last-16 stage earlier this week.

“Both the president, Luis Rubiales, and the sporting director, Jose Francisco Molina, have told the coach their decision,” the Spanish FA said in a statement.

The federation said they wanted to thank Luis Enrique and his staff for their work, but had decided to start a “new project”.

“The sporting direction of the RFEF has given the president a report, in which it was determined that a new project should start for the national team, to continue the growth achieved in the last few years thanks to Luis Enrique and his colleagues,” added the RFEF.

Spain hammered Costa Rica 7-0 in their opening game in Qatar but suffered a shock defeat by Japan, resulting in a second-place finish in Group E.

Spain were strong favorites to beat Morocco in the first knockout round but lost 3-0 on penalties after the game finished 0-0 following extra time.

“We dominated the game but we lacked a goal,” lamented Luis Enrique after the game.

“We could have been more effective in the final third, but I am more than satisfied with what my players did.

“They represented perfectly what my idea of football is.”

Spain last lifted a major trophy a decade ago at Euro 2012, while they have not won a single knockout game at the World Cup since triumphing in South Africa in 2010.

Luis Enrique took over in 2018 after Spain’s disappointing Russian World Cup showing and led La Roja to the semi-finals of Euro 2020, where Italy was also beaten on penalties.
