Buhari Salutes Morocco For Making Africa Proud

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has congratulated the Moroccan football team, the Atlas Lions, and the monarch of the kingdom, King Mohammed, for creating history at the 2018 World Cup in Qatar.

In a congratulatory statement released by his spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu, on Monday, in Abuja, Buhari commended the Atlas Lions for being the fourth team from an African nation to ever qualify for the World Cup quarterfinals.

The team is also the first in Africa to gain a berth in a semi-final at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

According to Buhari, Morocco has made the whole continent proud with their courage and agility, offering optimism that an African team can indeed win, and should win the current world championship in Qatar.

Buhari complimented the squad for their expertise and collaboration, stating at the same time that this could not have been done without the excellent participation of the Moroccan government in putting together a competitive team.

QATAR 2022: ‘Ronaldo Not Meant To Win The World Cup’ – Okocha

Austin 'Jay-Jay' Okocha has suggested Portugal great Cristiano Ronaldo was not intended to win the World Cup, following the loss to Morocco.

Cristiano Ronaldo came on in the 51st minute for Portugal against Morocco but was unable to alter the outcome positively and saw his side tumble out.

Jay Jay Okocha, who played 73 times for the Super Eagles and scored 14 goals, feels the former Manchester United striker was not meant to add the World Cup title to his magnificent cabinet.

“Oh yes! We have seen it in this tournament. A lot of stars have cried because they knew this could be their last chance of playing in the World Cup,” Okocha told SuperSport TV.

“We saw Luis [Suarez] and now Ronaldo. What a fantastic career he has had. He is an icon but I mean, some things are not meant to be. I do not think that it was meant for him to win the World Cup because they had everything, but credit to Morocco.”

Olayinka Told To Dump Prague For Fenerbahce

FC Vlasim midfielder Zdenek Folprecht reportedly encouraged Nigerian striker Peter Olayinka to abandon Czech giants Slavia Prague for Turkish Super Lig side Fenerbahce.

The Nigeria international, who can play as a winger and striker, has been outstanding in the Czech topflight this season, notching 11 goals and four assists from 23 games in all competitions in the current campaign.

The Super Eagles striker has tallied 44 goals and 23 assists in 170 games since he joined Prague in 2018, earning three league and two Cup crowns.

Following his great performance, Olayinka has been strongly linked with a move away from Prague in the previous two seasons, with his probable destination the Turkish Super Lig.

Folprecht has now pushed him to make a significant move away from Prague.

Speaking on Football Focus Podcast, Folprecht stated if there was a suitable offer, Slavia saw no reason to prohibit Olayinka from joining Fenerbahce.

“If I could communicate with him, I would advise him to leave and move on,” Folprecht told Fotospor.

“Fenerbahce has a bigger name in the world than Slavia, they play with players around the world. Leaders in the league, there is a great atmosphere in the stands. Slavia has stadiums that are twice the size of the stadium, probably more money. The prestige of the club is higher than in Slavia.

His contract terminates at the conclusion of the season, and there are no constructive negotiations regarding a new deal. The Nigerian attacker will be free to chat to other teams in January.

Fenerbahce are top of the Turkish Super Lig with 29 points after 13 games and the addition of Olayinka might further strengthen their chances of winning the league championship.

I Am Not The Most Talented To Come Out Of Nigeria, Ex-Super Eagles Captain Mikel Obi Declares

In a moment of humility, the former Nigerian international and Chelsea star shared with young Nigerians in Lagos his journey to stardom in football.

Former Super Eagles captain John Obi-Mikel says he has never considered himself the most talented football player from Nigeria ever.

Mikel revealed this during the Vyootopia Mission89 Africa digital sports conference 2022.

The former Nigerian international was the 'personality spotlight' at the well-attended event, with the theme - 'Adopting new technologies in digital sports and increasing opportunities for African youth in the sports industry.

Mikel called time on his football career earlier this year after 20 successful years playing at the highest level of the game.

However, according to the 35-year-old former Premier League winner, he was just one of the luckiest players to have made it out of Nigeria.

"I have done a lot in my life and career," Mikel stated. "You know, going from where i grew up in the North, in Jos, playing football with no shoes and clothes like a lot of us here."

"And when the opportunities came, i am never going to say i am the most talented football player to come out of Nigeria but one of the Luckiest."

He added that apart from luck, he was also dedicated, prayerful and disciplined with his career.

"I have been very lucky to have gone to where i have in my career," he added. "who i am today is about luck, dedication, discipline, and prayers and i thank God for where he has taken me to."

Mikel became a household name in Nigeria after he impressed with Nigeria at the 2005 FIFA U-17 FIFA World Cup in the Netherlands, where the Flying Eagles finished second to a Lionel Messi-led Argentina side.

He represented Nigeria at all youth levels and was a part of the Super Eagles team that lifted the AFCON in 2013.

The talented midfielder was also part of Bronze medals AFCON teams in the 2006, 2010, and 2019 editions. Mikel also won a Bronze medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil with the national U-23s.
