Spain Detains Dani Alves On Alleged Sexual Assault

Dani Alves, a defender for Brazil, was detained on Friday in Spain on suspicion of sexually assaulting a woman at a Barcelona nightclub in December, according to police.

According to a representative of Catalonia's regional police force, the Mossos d'Esquadra, the 39-year-old footballer was brought to a police station in Barcelona where he was "taken into prison" and will now be interrogated by a court.

On January 2, a lady complained to the Catalan police that Alves had touched her impermissibly, according to the authorities.

According to Spanish media accounts, the alleged sexual assault happened throughout the night of December 30 and 31 at a well-known Barcelona nightclub.

According to the reports, the footballer was charged with placing his hands down the woman's trousers.

Alves, 39, has acknowledged that he was there at the moment but has denied any wrongdoing. Earlier this month, he told the private Spanish television station Antena 3 that he had "never seen" the woman before.

"I was there, at that location, having fun with more people. I like dancing, as everyone knows. having fun without encroaching on other people's privacy," the former Barcelona and Juventus player remarked.

Alves, who now represents Pumas UNAM of Mexico, was on vacation in Barcelona after representing Brazil in the World Cup in Qatar.

As a consequence of a complaint made by a woman against a football player, a court in Barcelona said earlier this month that it had begun an investigation into "an alleged crime of sexual assault."

January 20, 2023 ‘Happy To Be Back’, Ronaldo Says Scoring Two Goals Against PSG

‘Happy To Be Back’, Ronaldo Says Scoring Two Goals Against PSG

Cristiano Ronaldo, a star for Al Nassr, has expressed happiness after his debut against Paris Saint-Germain on Thursday in a Saudi all-star exhibition game.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner, who posted on social media to share his delight at returning to competitive action, said he was glad to be back on the field and even happier to have scored in the thrilling 5-4 game. Additionally, he was named the game's Man of the Match.

"So delighted to be back on the field, and on the scoreboard!!" Ronaldo said in a post including images from the game, including one of him embracing longtime foe Lionel Messi. And it's good to run into some old pals!"

It was claimed on Thursday night that Kylian Mbappe, Ronaldo, and Messi all scored in the exhibition match between PSG and the Saudi team in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which PSG won by only one goal.

After recovering from a hit to the face, Ronaldo scored twice for his Sauid-led squad.

In his first game after transferring to Saudi Arabia in a transaction reportedly for more than 400 million euros, Ronaldo, 37, was floored by PSG goalkeeper Keylor Navas's flailing fist, but he blasted the resultant penalty and then added another in a 5-4 exhibition loss.

Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Neymar all scored for Qatar-owned PSG, but Neymar missed a penalty, and at the hour mark, they all left the game, along with Ronaldo, who was playing for a combined Saudi team, leaving the four highest-paid athletes in the world to watch from the sidelines in Riyadh.

For the exhibition game in the Saudi capital, which took place only weeks after neighboring Qatar lavishly spent on the first World Cup on Arab territory, won by Messi's Argentina, there were players worth hundreds of millions of euros on display.

The 69,000-seat King Fahd Stadium was filled with spectators, including a Saudi real estate tycoon who paid $2.6 million at auction for a ticket that allowed him access to the players' locker rooms.

Ronaldo, a great player for Portugal, signed a two-year contract with a Saudi Arabian club for a total value of €200 million, including commercial bonuses.

The Portuguese captain left Manchester United after a contentious interview in which he harshly criticized the team, becoming a free agent.

The acquisition of the former Real Madrid great was referred to as "history in the making" by Al Nassr, a nine-time champion in the Saudi Pro League.

It was also reported earlier in January that Ronaldo's debut was delayed because the English Football Association forced him to serve a two-match suspension even after leaving Europe.

The FA launched an inquiry when Ronaldo accidentally smacked a fan's phone out of their hand during Manchester United's loss against Everton in April 2022, delaying his much awaited debut.

Australian Open 2023: Rafael Nadal ‘Mentally Destroyed’ After Second-Round Exit

Injured Following the completion of his Australian Open championship defense in the second round, Rafael Nadal claims he is "mentally destroyed."

The left hip issue that plagued Spaniard Rafael Nadal caused him to lose to American Mackenzie McDonald 6-4 6-3 7-5.

The 36-year-old said that while he had the ailment prior to the game, the discomfort had not been as bad as it is now.

"I really hope that it doesn't put me out of the court for a long time," Nadal said.

"It's not only the recovery. It's all the amount of work that you need to put together to come back at a decent level.

"I went through this process too many times in my career, and I am ready to keep doing it. I think, but that's not easy."

Speaking at his post-match news conference, 22-time Grand Slam champion Nadal said he felt he "cannot move" after his earliest exit at a Grand Slam since the 2016 Australian Open, when he was eliminated in the first round.

"[I] just can't say that I am not destroyed mentally at this time, because I will be lying," he said.

"Hopefully, it is nothing too bad. In the end [there] have been three positive weeks in terms of practice."

Nadal was trailing by a set and a break when he pulled up with the injury, taking a medical timeout towards the end of the second set before continuing.

He said he had considered stopping "all the time" but "didn't want to leave the court with a retirement".

"Just try your best until the end," added Nadal, who won his second Melbourne title 12 months ago. "It doesn't matter the chances that you have. That's the philosophy of the sport.

"That's the essence of the sport by itself. I tried to follow that during all my tennis career, and I tried of course to not increase the damage, because I didn't know what's going on."

This is the latest in a series of physical problems for Nadal, who admitted he had no feeling in his left foot during his victory at the French Open last year because of painkilling injections for the chronic injury.

He also withdrew from his Wimbledon semi-final last year with an abdominal injury he picked up in the previous match, and the same injury then hampered him at the US Open, where he suffered a fourth-round exit against Frances Tiafoe and appeared to injure his rib.

He said it was his love of the sport that keeps him going amid the injury setbacks.

British Billionaire Declares Interest In Buying Man United

On Tuesday, the business owned by British billionaire Jim Ineos formally entered the Manchester United purchase competition.

Ratcliffe is eager to reach a deal, and United's owners, the Glazer family, said in November that they would be open to hearing proposals for the Premier League team.

Ratcliffe, a lifelong supporter of United who tried unsuccessfully to purchase Chelsea for £4.25 billion ($5.2 billion) last year, has long been associated with the club from Old Trafford.

“I can confirm that we have formally put ourselves into the process,” an Ineos spokesman told AFP.

Ratcliffe is looking for another Premier League behemoth after his failed acquisition of Chelsea when Roman Abramovich sold the Blues to American entrepreneur Todd Boehly and his group.

The 70-year-interest old's in replacing the Glazers, who are located in the United States, have not yet received a response from the United.

Ratcliffe, who was born in Failsworth, Greater Manchester, is one of the wealthiest individuals in the country and could be more popular with the United fans than the Glazers, who have seen several fan demonstrations during their tumultuous rule.

Due to the team's recent on-field struggles, the Glazers, who completed a leveraged buyout of the club in 2005, have encountered extreme opposition from fans.

They have long been accused of pulling more money out than they have put in in terms of transfer funding, and their acquisition of United also left the club with enormous debts.

By supporting the unsuccessful European Super League initiative in April 2021, which would have resulted in the team joining a breakaway league, the Glazers infuriated United supporters even more.

The board would "explore all strategic possibilities, including additional investment into the club, a sale, or other transactions involving the firm," according to a statement from United in November.

United's last big prize was six years ago, and they haven't won the Premier League since that year.

United, which had a miserable sixth-place finish in the Premier League last year, has been revitalized by manager Erik ten Hag and is now fourth after defeating archrival Manchester City 2-1 on Saturday.

Ratcliffe may face competition from Saudi Arabian investors after the country’s sports minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal said in November there “could” be interest in buying United and Liverpool, who are also up for sale.

American investment firm Raine Group, who handled Chelsea’s sale, are exclusively advising United, who are valued at around £5 billion.

Ratcliffe’s entry into the bidding process came just hours after United legend Peter Schmeichel defended the club’s decision to set up a luxury lounge at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Positioned near global software companies, consultancies and banks, the club has created a lounge on the main high street of Davos, a luxury Swiss ski resort teeming with billionaires and CEOs this week during the annual Forum.

“If you look at what we say about ourselves — we say that we are one of the biggest sporting brands in the world — then I think you have to back it up by having a presence in places like this,” Schmeichel, who is acting as an ambassador, told AFP.

Schmeichel, who won five Premier League titles and the Champions League with United, said his personal preference would be for fans to buy the club, but he conceded that this was an unlikely outcome.

“I know there’s a lot of fans who are wanting a change in ownership,” he said.

“For me… would it make a difference to change the ownership? I think the only difference would be if it was owned by the fans, but I think that’s probably impossible. It’s too big.”
