Man City Face Arsenal In FA Cup Showdown

Manchester City and Arsenal take a break from an intense Premier League title race this weekend – only to face each other in a heavyweight FA Cup clash at the Etihad.

Holders Liverpool will look to avenge their chastening recent defeat at Brighton, while Harry Kane could become Tottenham’s all-time top scorer.

AFP Sport picks out some of the highlights ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup fourth-round ties.

Man City aims to halt Arsenal’s momentum

Unexpectedly trailing in Arsenal’s wake in the Premier League, Manchester City has the chance to slow the leaders’ momentum in their first meeting this season.

The city is five points behind Arsenal, who have a game in hand, but the champions still have to play the Gunners twice in the league, making their FA Cup showdown a tantalizing appetiser ahead of the main course.

Arsenal is riding high after victories over Tottenham and Manchester United in the league, while City stayed in touch after responding to a blast from Pep Guardiola by beating Tottenham and Wolves.

“At half-time the other day, Pep told us what he wanted, what he wasn’t happy with. As players, we were not at our best and we had to correct that,” City defender John Stones said of his side’s fightback from two goals down to defeat Tottenham 4-2.

It would be a major statement of intent from Arsenal if they can put Guardiola in another grumpy mood with a victory at the Etihad Stadium.

Jurgen Klopp said he “couldn’t remember a worse game” than Liverpool’s woeful 3-0 defeat at Brighton, a performance so wretched that Jordan Henderson labeled it a “really low point” in an already traumatic season for the Reds.

It is safe to say Liverpool’s trip to the Amex Stadium on January 14 left some painful scars on Klopp and company.

But the FA Cup offers them an unexpected chance to erase those bitter memories and get their campaign back on track.

Liverpool returns to Brighton languishing ninth in the Premier League, 10 points adrift of the top four.

It is a remarkable fall from grace after they came within a whisker of winning an unprecedented quadruple last season.

Admitting Liverpool is still mentally fatigued from their bid for sporting immortality, Spain midfielder Thiago Alcantara said: “It is not just about physical stuff, it is something psychological because we were so close to winning everything and we just touched it but sadly it went away.”

Former Boxer Mike Tyson Sued For $5M For Allegedly Raping Woman In Early ’90s

A woman is suing boxing icon Mike Tyson, alleging that he sexually assaulted her in a limo in the early 1990s after they met at a well-known nightclub in Albany.

The unidentified plaintiff claims in her case, which was submitted in Albany this month and asks for $5 million in damages, that the rape has caused her to have "physical, psychological, and emotional injury" over the years.

The woman's affidavit, which The Post obtained, does not give a specific date for the alleged attack; it only states that it took place at some point in the early 1990s, which is around the same time that Desiree Washington, then 18, who was competing in a beauty pageant, claimed the former heavyweight champion raped her in Indianapolis, made her accusation.

On February 10, 1992, Tyson, then 56, was found guilty of raping Washington and was sentenced to three years in jail. He has steadfastly defended his innocence in the situation.

According to the state's newly passed Adult Survivors Act, which allows sexual assault victims a year to bring cases for assaults that occurred years or even decades ago, the legal action in upstate New York was brought.

In her affidavit, the alleged victim said that she met Tyson at the then-named "Septembers" nightclub and subsequently boarded his limousine after he offered to pick up her companion and drive the two of them to a party. The boxer allegedly tried to kiss her and began caressing her right away, according to the woman.

“I told him no several times and asked him to stop, but he continued to attack me,” the woman said. “He then pulled my pants off and violently raped me.”

The document does not say whether Tyson’s driver was inside the vehicle at the time of the alleged rape, or whether the limo was parked or in motion.
The woman is seeking to maintain her anonymity because, she said, publication of her name “would certainly pose a risk to me of further mental harm, harassment, ridicule or personal embarrassment.”

The plaintiff’s attorney, Darren Seilback, said in a separate filing that his office did not simply take the woman at her word but thoroughly investigated her allegations and determined that they are “highly credible.”

As the undisputed heavyweight champion from 1987 to 1990, Tyson achieved global renown, but his life outside of the ring has been plagued by several scandals and his battles with addiction.
Actress Robin Givens, Tyson's first ex-wife, said in divorce documents that their short union in the late 1980s was marked by "unprovoked rages of violence and devastation."

In 2002, the athlete's second wife, Monica Turner, filed for divorce from him, claiming that throughout their six-year marriage, he had committed adultery.

In 2009, not long after Monica Spicer, then 44, was released from jail after a fraud conviction, Tyson married his third wife. Tyson has five elder children from his past partnerships in addition to the couple's two children.

Napoli To Offer Osimhen €7m Yearly Contract

To retain Victor Osimhen at the club, Napoli is willing to break from their compensation structure and pay him far more than he is now paid.

At Napoli, the Nigerian striker is enjoying a fantastic season. In 19 appearances across all competitions this year, he has scored 14 goals.

He has been strongly linked with a transfer away from the Serie A powerhouses for the next campaign, with other teams throughout Europe reportedly showing interest.

It has been suggested in Italian media, as published by AreaNapoli, that Napoli is willing to deviate from their salary structure to the striker through next summer.

They have a €3.5 million annual cap on player salaries, but Napoli is willing to make an exception for Osimhen.

Napoli hopes that by meeting with the forward's agents and making him an offer of a contract worth up to €7 million per season, they would be able to persuade him to sign on for at least one more season.

Although it is a sizable contract offer by Serie A standards, Osimhen would undoubtedly want to test himself in the Premier League and Manchester United, who are eager to recruit the Nigerian international, are in a position to give him much more.

However, if he decides to go, Napoli would probably accept bids around €120 mill of ion for him next summer, and given the outstanding form he has shown this year, there won't be a lack of interested parties once the transfer market opens.

The fact that the top teams in Europe are interested in the striker, who is strong, quick, and a fantastic finisher with a career total of 80 goals in 171 games and is still just 24 years old, is not surprising.

January 24, 2023 UEFA To Change Rules In Response To Chelsea Deals

UEFA To Change Rules In Response To Chelsea Deals

In reaction to Chelsea's recent practice of acquiring players on long-term contracts, Uefa will alter its Financial Fair Play regulations.

Chelsea may stretch the player's transfer price over the course of prolonged contracts when presenting their yearly financial reports.

Mykhailo Mudryk's eight-and-a-half-year contract will be worth £11 million a year, which makes him an £89 million signing.

A transfer fee may only be amortized over five years, according to Uefa.

Under UK standards, clubs will still be allowed to offer lengthier contracts, but they will not be able to extend transfer fees over the first five years.

The new FFP regulations won't be retroactive and will take effect in the summer.

Due to the lengthy contracts of the players, Chelsea will be able to stay within the rules even after the Madueke signing brought their total expenditure since last summer close to £450 million.

The Blues must abide by two sets of rules: the profit and sustainability standards of the Premier League and, since they often compete in European competition, the FFP restrictions of Uefa.

Clubs are permitted to spend up to 5 million euros (£4.4 million) over three years, according to current Uefa regulations. They may go above this amount up to a cap of 30 million euros (£26.6 million) if the club's owner covers the full cost.

Clubs that violate these criteria might face a variety of sanctions from warnings to penalties and possibly the loss of European championships, according to the regulating body.

Although permissible losses over three years have increased to 60 million euros (£49.96 million), new Uefa regulations put a cap on teams' expenditure on salaries, transfers, and agency fees at 70% of their income.

The laws will be implemented gradually, with the proportion set at 90% of income in 2023–2024, 80% in 2025–2026, and then 70% in 2026–2027.
