Former Liverpool Midfielder Appointed Manager of Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Pro League

Steven Gerrard, the former England and Liverpool midfielder, has been appointed as the manager of Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq.

Despite previously stating in June that he had been offered an opportunity in Saudi Arabia but would not be pursuing it, Gerrard has now taken up the managerial position.

Khalid Al-Dabal, the chairman of Al-Ettifaq, expressed his excitement about Gerrard joining the club, stating that his presence will undoubtedly enhance the league.

Gerrard has signed a two-year contract with the Saudi club. Al-Ettifaq finished seventh in the 16-team Saudi Pro League last season, lagging 35 points behind champions Al-Ittihad.

Having been without a managerial role since his dismissal from Aston Villa in October of the previous year, Gerrard is now set to embark on a new chapter in Saudi Arabia.

This move comes in the wake of significant investments by Pro League clubs during the summer, with several notable European players joining Cristiano Ronaldo of Manchester United in making the move to the Middle East.

Neymar Fined $3.3m For Building Lake At Mansion

Brazilian soccer star Neymar has been fined 16 million reais ($3.3 million) by a prosecutor in Brazil for constructing a lake at his Rio de Janeiro mansion without obtaining an environmental license, authorities revealed on Monday.

The town council of Mangaratiba issued four fines for environmental violations related to the creation of an artificial lake at Neymar's residence, situated in a tourist area approximately 130 kilometers (80 miles) from Rio de Janeiro, where the Paris Saint-Germain player owns a mansion.

The penalties amount to over 16 million reais, as determined by the prosecutor's office in Mangaratiba.

The list of infractions includes numerous violations, such as carrying out construction work without proper environmental authorization, unauthorized diversion of river water, and unauthorized land excavation and vegetation removal.

Neymar has a 20-day window to appeal the fine, which was initially set at five million reais, close to one million dollars.

Authorities discovered the environmental violations on June 22 after receiving complaints based on social media posts. They promptly cordoned off the site and ordered all activities to cease.

However, Brazilian media reported that Neymar organized a party at the property and even took a dip in the lake, disregarding the directives. Neymar's press office in Brazil did not respond to a request for comment from AFP.

Currently recuperating from ankle surgery he underwent in Doha in March, the 31-year-old striker has been absent from the field since February, raising doubts about his future at PSG.

Neymar acquired the Mangaratiba mansion in 2016, which spans approximately 10,000 square meters (107,000 square feet) and boasts amenities such as a heliport, spa, and gym, according to Brazilian media reports.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr Strikes Kit Deal with Nike

In an exciting development, Al-Nassr has announced Nike as their official kit supplier for the upcoming 2023-24 season.

The news comes after the arrival of football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo in January, who has a longstanding partnership with Nike.

The official Twitter account of Al-Nassr shared the announcement, expressing their delight in partnering with Nike for the upcoming season. It marks the third collaboration between Al-Nassr and Nike, following their previous partnerships from 1997-2001 and 2010-2012.

Although the change in kit manufacturer from Arabic giants Duneus to Nike has taken place, fans can expect a seamless transition as Duneus drew inspiration from Nike's style for their current kit design. The switch signifies Al-Nassr's dedication to maintaining a strong visual identity while aligning with the global influence of Nike.

This move aligns with the growing international profile of the Saudi Pro League, as Al-Hilal, another prominent team in the league, recently partnered with renowned sportswear brand Puma on a five-year contract. As the league continues to gain recognition, such collaborations with major sportswear brands further enhance its appeal and visibility.

Nick Kyrgios Withdraws From Wimbledon Due To Wrist Injury

Nick Kyrgios, last year's Wimbledon finalist, has unfortunately been forced to withdraw from this year's tournament due to a wrist injury.

In a statement, Kyrgios shared his disappointment, saying, "I'm really sad to say that I have to withdraw from Wimbledon this year."

He explained that he experienced wrist pain during his comeback in Mallorca and, as a precaution, had the injury scanned. The results revealed a torn ligament in his wrist, leaving him with insufficient time to recover and manage the injury ahead of the Grand Slam.

Expressing his determination to return, Kyrgios thanked his fans for their unwavering support. As the 30th seed, he was scheduled to face David Goffin on Monday. However, a lucky loser will take his place in the draw, to be decided on Monday morning.

Kyrgios' participation in Wimbledon was already limited, as he had only played one Tour-level match since undergoing knee surgery in January. Unfortunately, his hopes for a successful campaign at the prestigious tournament have been dashed by this latest setback. While there were initial doubts about his fitness, Kyrgios remained optimistic about his chances before ultimately having to withdraw.

Despite expressing satisfaction with his fitness on the eve of the event, the Australian tennis player has been plagued by injuries this year.

"I still think there are some question marks. Obviously five-set tennis is a completely different beast altogether," Kyrgios had said.

"I look at my preparations last year coming in, I probably had the most ideal preparation possible. It couldn't be any different this year.

"Again, I'm not going to discredit the work I've put in for the past six months just trying to maintain my fitness, get back on court. I've been hitting with some really good players this week and my body is feeling okay.

"I'm going to take it one day at a time. I'm not going to look forward and put unfair expectations on myself. I'm just going to try to do everything I can, prepare, go out there and play some good tennis.

"I've been really disciplined throughout that time. I barely missed any sort of part of the process. I've been working really hard. I've been trying to do everything possible. I feel probably as good as I could feel at the moment.

Obviously my body was just crying out for some sort of rest. I needed to do what I had to do. It’s been brutal. It’s been hard.”
