Chelsea Agree Deal To Sign Monaco Defender Disasi

Chelsea have reached an agreement to sign defender Axel Disasi from AS Monaco for 45m euros (£38.57m).

France international Disasi, 25, will give Chelsea another right-sided centre-back option following the injury to Wesley Fofana.

Fofana has been ruled out for several months after undergoing anterior cruciate ligament surgery.

Benoit Badiashile is also currently injured and will not be fit until after the Premier League season starts.

Chelsea have Thiago Silva, Trevoh Chalobah and Levi Colwill, who has interest from Brighton, as their options in the centre of defence as things stand.

Disasi has made 118 appearances for Monaco since joining the Ligue 1 club from Stade de Reims in August 2020.

He has earned four caps for France, making his full international debut in the World Cup defeat by Tunisia last November.

The Frenchman will become Chelsea's third summer signing, following forwards Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are also close to securing the £23.2m signing of Rennes midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu, though he could be immediately sent on loan to Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, after Chelsea's ownership group purchased a majority stake in the club earlier this summer.

Nkunku Scores As Chelsea Win Summer Series

Chelsea won the Premier League Summer Series pre-season tournament as they beat Fulham 2-0 at FedEx Field in Maryland.

A 20th-minute Thiago Silva header from a Ben Chilwell corner opened the scoring.

A tap-in from Christopher Nkunku just before half-time after good work from Carney Chukwuemeka sealed the win.

It was Nkunku's third goal of pre-season following the French striker's £52m move from RB Leipzig.

The game was played at the home of NFL team Washington Commanders.

Fulham did not provide much of an attacking threat although Calvin Bassey, playing for the club for the first time since his £19m move from Ajax, headed over from a corner in the second half.

One negative for Chelsea was when defender Trevoh Chalobah had to be substituted after receiving treatment for a knock on the pitch.

That potential injury will be a worry for new Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino, with fellow centre-back Benoit Badiashile not set be fit for the start of the Premier League season.

Chelsea have, however, reached an agreement to sign defender Axel Disasi from AS Monaco for 45m euros (£38.57m).

Victory means Chelsea have won the first Premier League Summer Series - the pre-season tournament also featuring Aston Villa, Brighton, Brentford, and Newcastle - without losing a game.

Brighton Rejects Chelsea’s £80m Caicedo Bid

Brighton has rejected a further bid from Chelsea, believed to be about £80m, for midfielder Moises Caicedo.

Caicedo, 21, is with Roberto de Zerbi's squad in New Jersey, where they are set to play Newcastle on Friday.

Brighton are understood to have rejected the revised offer instantly, and are said to be committed to keeping the Ecuador international.

Caicedo is one of Chelsea's long-term transfer targets and two bids have been previously rejected.

However, Brighton adopted a similarly hardline approach with Chelsea last year and relented when the bidding rose above £60m for defender Marc Cucurella.

Brighton boss De Zerbi last week said he was planning to have Caicedo in his squad for next season.

The player was a key component in the side who finished sixth in the Premier League last season, securing a Europa League group-stage spot.

Caicedo asked to leave Brighton in January amid interest from Arsenal.

However, in March he signed a new contract running to 2027.

Superb Argentina Comeback Earns South Africa Draw

Argentina manager German Portanova told his team to "play with the love that optimises our football" before they produced a stunning comeback from two goals down to draw with South Africa.

South Africa was on course to pick up a first-ever Women's World Cup victory in a pulsating encounter in Dunedin, but in the end, they had to settle for their first point after Argentina scored twice within five second-half minutes.

Knowing defeat would take Argentina to the brink of elimination, they threw everything at Desiree Ellis' side in the second half and were rewarded for their endeavour.

Substitute Romina Nunez headed in Argentina's second goal after a superb half-volley from Sophia Braun had stunned South Africa.

Glasgow City winger Linda Motlhalo gave South Africa the lead after being teed up by Thembi Kgatlana, who was shown to have stayed onside following a video assistant referee (VAR) review.

Kgatlana should have scored after the break when she sliced Jermaine Seoposenwe's curling cross wide from close range, but the two combined later for South Africa's second goal

South Africa faces Italy in their final group match but could be without captain Refiloe Jane - who was taken off on a stretcher.

Jane's replacement Kholosa Biyana picked up another yellow card and is ruled out against Italy with suspension.
