Nnadozie’s Heroics Save Resolute Nigeria Against Canada

Nigeria’s Super Falcons started their 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign in Australia and New Zealand with a goalless draw against Olympic champions, Canada.

Goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie turned the heroine of the match played in Brisbane after saving Christine Sinclair’s penalty early in the second half.

In the 23rd minute, the Nigerian ladies went close with the opener despite Canada’s early dominance when Ifeoma Onumonu had her well-taken shot parried away by goalkeeper, Kailen Sheridan.

The Canadians were on the ascendency in the game, with their attacking powerhouse piling immense pressure on the Nigerians.

Minutes later, Francisca Ordega fouled Christine Sinclair with the veteran stepping up to take the resultant spot kick. But the Nigeria goalie dived correctly to her left to save the 50th-minute penalty and deny the Olympic champions from taking the lead.

Both sides attempted to take the lead but none could break the deadlock as the game ended goalless in the first half.

On the resumption of the second half, the North Americans surged forward in search of a goal, with waves of attacks against Randy Wandrum’s girls.

Although Nigeria could have snatched a goal, Onumonu’s close-range effort from Uchenna Kanu’s cross was saved before the flag went off for offside.

Tosin Demehin saved Nigeria’s blushes with five minutes to go after she blocked Canada’s goal-bound shot. But in the 98th minute, the Super Falcons were reduced to ten players after Deborah Abiodun was given a straight red card following a tackle on a Canadian.

In the other Group B game, co-hosts Australia defeated debutants Ireland 1-0 to go top of the lot. The Falconets will now play the Austrians in their next game on July 27th.

Jordan Henderson: Liverpool Captain Set to Join Al-Ettifaq in £12m Deal with Add-Ons

Liverpool Football Club has reached an agreement in principle to sell their captain, Jordan Henderson, to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq for a deal worth £12 million, with additional add-ons.

Although Henderson traveled with the Liverpool squad to Germany for their training camp, he was not involved in their recent friendly match against Karlsruher. The England midfielder, aged 33, still has two years left on his contract at Anfield.

Interestingly, the move to Al-Ettifaq comes after Al-Ittihad made a £40 million offer for fellow Liverpool midfielder Fabinho last week. Like Henderson, Fabinho did not join the squad in Germany as his future at the club is being resolved.

The transfer to Al-Ettifaq marks an increasing trend of high-profile players moving to Saudi Arabia this summer. Other notable players who have made similar moves include Karim Benzema and N'Golo Kante.

Jordan Henderson's journey with Liverpool began in June 2011 when he joined from Sunderland for £20 million. Throughout his time at Anfield, he has made a total of 492 appearances, scoring 33 goals and providing 57 assists.

Henderson has been a key figure for Liverpool, serving as captain during significant triumphs, including the Champions League victory in 2019, followed by the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup titles in the same year. He also played a vital role in securing Liverpool's long-awaited Premier League title in the 2019-2020 season.

Despite his illustrious career at Liverpool, Henderson's potential move to Saudi Arabia has raised concerns among LGBTQ+ campaigners. Same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Saudi Arabia, and the player has previously shown public support for the LGBTQ+ community.

Bjorn Borg's son Leo celebrated his first ATP Tour win with a straight-sets victory over Elias Ymer on clay at the Swedish Open.

Borg, 20, was handed a wildcard entry and beat Swedish compatriot Ymer 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 at the Bastad Tennis Stadium.

Ranked at a lowly 437th, Borg plays mostly on the ITF Tour, the lowest level of the men's professional game.

"I've worked so hard for this, so many years, and some days you get results and today I got a win," he said.

Borg will play Argentina's Federico Coria, who is the world number 113, in the last-16 stage of the tournament.

Bjorn Borg was one of tennis' greatest ever stars and won 11 Grand Slam titles - including five back-to-back Wimbledon titles - in the 1970s and early 1980s before he retired aged only 26.
