Eguavoen Confirms Striker Boniface Will Stay in the Squad

Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen has reaffirmed his support for striker Victor Boniface despite the forward’s inability to replicate his impressive club form on the international stage.

Speaking after Nigeria’s 2-1 loss to Rwanda in their final Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group D qualifier on Monday, Eguavoen acknowledged Boniface’s struggles but emphasized his importance to the team’s future plans.

The match, held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, saw Rwanda come from behind to secure a surprise victory. Despite the loss, Nigeria had already secured qualification for AFCON 2025 in Morocco, finishing atop the group with 11 points.

Addressing Boniface’s form, Eguavoen said, “Boniface is an excellent player at the club level. When he comes here, we try to instill confidence in him and give him ample playing time. But for some reason, he’s yet to find his rhythm with the national team.”

The coach added that he has had several discussions with the 22-year-old striker to boost his morale, which he believes is critical for success. “I’m someone who believes in building players’ confidence. I’ve done everything I can to support him, but it hasn’t clicked yet,” Eguavoen admitted.

Boniface, who debuted for the Super Eagles in September 2023, has yet to score for the national team in 11 appearances. This has drawn comparisons to Victor Osimhen, who has cemented his status as a fan favorite with consistent performances and goals.

When asked about Boniface’s future in the squad, Eguavoen expressed unwavering faith. “He’s still part of the team. He will remain part of the squad,” he confirmed.

Boniface, a standout at the club level, is seen as a promising talent for Nigeria’s football future. Eguavoen’s continued backing indicates that the striker will have more opportunities to prove himself in upcoming fixtures.

November 18, 2024 EPL: Tottenham’s Bentancur Receives Seven-Match Ban for Racist Comments

EPL: Tottenham’s Bentancur Receives Seven-Match Ban for Racist Comments

Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been handed a seven-match ban and fined £100,000 following an independent regulatory commission's ruling on racist remarks made about teammate Son Heung-min.

The suspension, confirmed by the Football Association (FA), comes after comments Bentancur made during a pre-season interview, as reported by multiple outlets, including Football London. The punishment includes a ban from domestic fixtures and a hefty fine.

Bentancur, a vital figure under Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou, has been pivotal for the team this season, missing only one Premier League game due to a concussion. His absence due to the suspension now poses a significant challenge for Postecoglou, as Tottenham will be without their key midfielder for an extended period.

The FA’s statement on Monday outlined the decision: “An independent regulatory commission has imposed a seven-match suspension and £100,000 fine on Rodrigo Bentancur for a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to a media interview. It was alleged that the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder breached FA Rule E3.1 by acting improperly, using abusive and/or insulting words, and bringing the game into disrepute.”

The suspension leaves Spurs needing to adjust their midfield dynamics as they aim to maintain their strong start to the Premier League season.
