Spanish FA President Rubiales Resigns Over Hermoso Kiss

Luis Rubiales has resigned as president of the Spanish Football Federation following criticism for kissing Spain forward Jenni Hermoso at the Women's World Cup final presentation ceremony.

Hermoso, 33, said the kiss after Spain beat England was not consensual, and she filed a legal complaint last Tuesday.

Rubiales said he had submitted his resignation to federation acting president Pedro Rocha in a statement.

"I cannot continue my work," he told Piers Morgan on his television.

The 46-year-old has also resigned as vice-president of UEFA’s executive committee.

The fallout from the kiss has engulfed Spanish football in recent weeks and overshadowed Spain's World Cup win, with Rubiales ignoring repeated calls to resign.

On Friday, a prosecutor filed a complaint with Spain's high court - following Hermoso's testimony on Tuesday - against Rubiales for sexual assault and coercion.

Rubiales claimed the kiss was "mutual and "consensual" but had been provisionally suspended by football's world governing body FIFA.

"After the quick suspension carried out by Fifa, plus the rest of open proceedings against me, it is evident that I will not be able to return to my position," Rubiales read.

"Insisting on waiting and holding on is not going to contribute to anything positive, neither to the federation nor to Spanish football."

Some 81 Spain players, including all 23 World Cup winners, said they would not play for the national team again while Rubiales was in his position.

Flick Sacked As Germany Boss Following Poor Run

Hansi Flick has been sacked as Germany manager following Saturday's 4-1 friendly defeat by Japan in Wolfsburg.

He became the first German boss to be sacked since the role was created in 1926.

Germany have lost four of their past five games, with Flick overseeing just 12 wins in his 25 matches since replacing Joachim Low in August 2021.

Rudi Voller, who managed the team from 2000 to 2004, takes temporary charge for Tuesday's friendly with France.

The 63-year-old Voller, a former Germany striker, was appointed director of the German national side in February.

Hannes Wolf and Sandro Wagner will assist him.

Germany will host the men's European Championship next year but has been in disarray.

Flick, 58, had been Low's assistant manager with Germany from 2006 to 2014.

His time in charge began with eight successive wins, but their form progressively worsened, and Germany exited last year's World Cup at the group stage.

His assistants, Marcus Sorg and Danny Rohl, have also been dismissed.

Oman, Costa Rica and Peru are the only teams Germany has beaten in the past 12 months.

The disappointing performance was a surprise, considering Flick won 70 of his 86 games in charge of Bayern Munich from November 2019 to June 2021.

Under Flick, Bayern won a treble of the domestic league and cup and Champions League titles in the 2019-20 season.

The German FA said it hoped to announce Flick's full-time replacement "as soon as possible".

Julian Nagelsmann, who replaced Flick as Bayern boss at the end of 2020-21, could be a leading contender. The highly-rated 38-year-old has been out of work since Bayern sacked him in March.

Victor Osimhen Scores Hat-Trick As Super Eagles Thrash Sao Tome 6-0

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen scored a hat-trick on Sunday to lead the Super Eagles of Nigeria to a 6-0 annihilation of Sao Tome & Principe in their final 2023 African Cup of Nations qualifier.

Osimhen opened the scoring as early as the 13th minute of the game after heading in from a corner kick off the boot of Leicester City winger Kelechi Iheanacho.

Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman made it 2-0 in favour of Nigeria in the 27th minute after being set up by Wilfred Ndidi.

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi got a goal in the early minutes of the second half to extend the Super Eagles' lead to three.

Osimhen got his brace via a penalty after the Sao Tome goalkeeper brought him down.

AC Milan winger Samuel Chukwueze laid on a superb assist for Osimhen to score his hat-trick, making it 5-0 to Nigeria.

Chukwueze then went from provider to scorer after netting the Super Eagles’ sixth goal courtesy of an assist from Bayer Leverkusen striker, Victor Boniface as Nigeria ended the AFCON qualifiers in style at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state.

The Super Eagles also finished as group leaders with 15 points from six matches ahead of Guinea Bissau, as both countries will be playing at the tournament in Cote d’Ivoire in January 2024.

Djokovic Wins Record-Equaling 24th Grand Slam Title

Novak Djokovic won a record-equaling 24th Grand Slam singles title by outlasting Daniil Medvedev in a punishing US Open final in New York.

The 36-year-old Serb won 6-3 7-6 (7-5) 6-3, but the straight-set score line does not tell how deep he had to dig.

A comfortable opening set was followed by a brutal second, which lasted one hour and 44 minutes.

After exchanging breaks early in the third, Djokovic took control to level Margaret Court's 50-year record.

"It obviously means the world to me," said Djokovic, winning his 24th major.

"I'm really living my childhood dream to compete at the highest level in this sport, which has given me and my family so much from difficult circumstances.

"I never thought I would be here, but the last few years, I thought I had a shot at history. Why not grab it when it is presented?"

Second seed Djokovic looked physically troubled in that gruelling second set but showed all the hallmarks of his greatness to win a fourth US Open title.

Djokovic, who surpassed Rafael Nadal's record tally of 22 men's major titles earlier this year, has matched Australia's Court at the second attempt after losing the Wimbledon final in July.

He has won three of the four Grand Slam titles in 2023, becoming the first man to achieve this feat on four occasions.

Now, the incoming world number one has the chance to surpass Court at January's Australian Open - where he has already won a record ten titles.

It felt fitting that Djokovic set up championship point by winning another lengthy rally and, after being made to wait to serve by shouts from the crowd, sealed victory when Medvedev hit a forehand into the net.
