Djokovic Wins In Cincinnati On USA Singles Return

Novak Djokovic eased to victory at the Cincinnati Open in his first singles match in the United States in two years.

The 23-times Grand Slam champion had been unable to compete in the US over Covid protocols.

But rules for unvaccinated foreign travellers were relaxed in May, enabling him to return to competition.

He won the first set 6-4 against Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who later retired with a back issue.

The victory was the 36-year-old's Serb's first-time playing singles in Cincinnati since 2019. However, on Tuesday, he lost in doubles when he and compatriot Nikola Cacic were beaten by Britain's Jamie Murray and Michael Venus of New Zealand.

Elsewhere, Australian qualifier Max Purcell beat third seed Casper Ruud in three sets for his first victory over a top-10-ranked player.

Purcell, the world number 70, saved six out of seven break points to win 6-4 3-6 6-4 and set up a meeting with three-time Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka.

The Swiss former world number three continued his return to form with a 6-3 6-4 win over American 16th seed Frances Tiafoe.

Sixth seed Jannik Sinneralso bowed out, losing 6-4 7-6 (7-1) to Serbian Dusan Lajovic.

Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev moved into the last 16 with a 6-3 6-2 win over Italy's Lorenzo Musetti.

Medvedev, who claimed the title in 2019 before reaching the US Open final, faces Germany's Alexander Zverev next.

England beat Australia to set up Spain showdown in their first Women’s World Cup final

England has made more history by reaching their first Women’s World Cup final, defeating Australia 3-1 to set up a match against Spain on Sunday.

The pre-match stroll centered on who would be regarded the underdog – the Euro 2022 champions or tournament co-hosts – as well as the two countries’ strong sporting history.

And it all added up to an exciting semi-final at Stadium Australia. Ella Toone (36) curled in a beautiful attempt as England drew first blood after the Matildas conceded their first World Cup goal since the second group game against Nigeria – a stretch of well over five hours.

Australia’s talismanic captain, Sam Kerr, returned to the XI and had her inevitable say in the 63rd minute, blasting home a spectacular shot from roughly 25 yards.

But England’s tournament pedigree began to shine through shortly after, with Lauren Hemp (71) putting the Lionesses back ahead before Alessia Russo (86) secured their place in Sunday’s showpiece final against Spain.

While co-hosts Australia, who had a fantastic home crowd in Sydney, can no longer win the tournament, they can finish third when they meet Sweden in the play-off on Saturday.

Venus Williams Earns Biggest Win In Four Years

American veteran Venus Williams beat a top-20 player for the first time in four years with victory over Russia's Veronika Kudermetova in Cincinnati.

Williams, 43, fought back from a double breakdown in each set to win 6-4 7-5 against 16th-ranked Kudermetova.

The seven-time major singles champion smiled broadly as she celebrated winning at a US tournament for the first time in more than three years.

"I love this game; it's what I do," said Williams, ranked 533rd.

"The last few years have been difficult regarding injuries, but I love to be out here, be strong and be myself. I'm getting there."

Williams will play China's Qinwen Zheng or Belarus' Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the second round.

The former world number one will look to win back-to-back matches on the WTA Tour for the first time since the 2019 event in Cincinnati.

That was also the tournament when she last won against a top-20 opponent, beating then world number five Kiki Bertens on her way to the quarter-finals.
