Coco Gauff To Win Third Title At Cincinnati Open, Defeating Karolina Muchova

American teenager Coco Gauff claimed the biggest title of her career with a straight-set win over Karolina Muchova in the Cincinnati Open final.

Gauff followed up her shock win over top seed Iga Swiatek in the semi-final with a 6-3 6-4 victory over her Czech opponent in Sunday's final.

It is the 19-year-old's fifth career title and her third of 2023 after wins in Washington DC and Auckland.

The victory gives Gauff a huge boost before the US Open, which starts on 28 August.

The American also becomes the first teenager to win three WTA titles in one year since Bianca Andreescu in 2019.

Seventh seed Gauff broke her opponent - whom she was facing for the first time - three times in the first set and confidently served out the opener to love in her first WTA 1000 final appearance.

Muchova, who is set to enter the top 10 for the first time, struggled for consistency, and a missed backhand in the fifth game of the second set gave Gauff a break.

Although the American failed to convert three match-point chances while serving at 5-2, she made amends in her next service game to seal the victory.

Barcelona Beat Cadiz For First Win Of Season

Pedri and Ferran Torres’ late strikes earned La Liga champions Barcelona a 2-0 win over Cadiz in their first competitive home game away from Camp Nou on Sunday.

Playing at the Olympic Stadium on the city’s Montjuic hill while their stadium is rebuilt and upgraded over the next year-and-a-half, the visitors nearly thwarted Barcelona.

Barca coach Xavi Hernandez, banned from the dugout after being sent off against Getafe, selected 16-year-old Lamine Yamal on the right instead of the suspended Raphinha, who was also dismissed last weekend.

On his first start for the club, Yamal came closest for the Catalans in the first half with an angled strike expertly tipped to safety by Jeremias Ledesma.

The forward thrilled nearly 40,000 fans — around 10,000 empty seats with a low uptake on season tickets because of the temporary move from Camp Nou.

At the other end, Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen went one better with a superb save to deny Roger Marti one-on-one after Alejandro Balde gave the ball away on the halfway line.

After Getafe held them to a frustrating goalless draw on the opening weekend, Cadiz almost managed the same feat until Ilkay Gundogan cleverly released Pedri to score.

Substitute Torres drove through the middle and tucked home in stoppage time to put a gloss on what was another unconvincing performance.

Djokovic Triumph In Cincinnati Open Title, Intensifies Rivalry With Win Over Alcaraz

Novak Djokovic avenged his Wimbledon final defeat to Carlos Alcaraz by beating the Spaniard in under four hours to win the Cincinnati Open.

The Serb survived a match point in the second set before winning 5-7 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-4). Top seed Alcaraz beat Djokovic in five sets in last month's Wimbledon final.

Djokovic compared the draining win to his Australian Open final victory 2012 when he defeated Nadal in five hours and 53 minutes.

"The feeling that I have on the court reminds me a little bit of when I was facing [Rafael] Nadal when we were at our prime," Djokovic said. "I don't think I've played too many matches like this."

After missing out on a match point in the second-set tie-break, Alcaraz found himself 5-3 down in the third, but he saved two match points to pull back to 5-4 before breaking Djokovic's serve to level the set.

However, Djokovic went 5-4 up on Alcaraz's serve in the tie-break before winning the next two points to claim victory in three hours and 49 minutes - the longest best-of-three-sets final in ATP Tour history.

Both players will be in action next week at the US Open, where Alcaraz will attempt to defend his title. At the same time, Djokovic, bidding for a 24th Grand Slam win, returns after missing last year's tournament because of his Covid vaccination.

Infantino Backs FIFA’s Decision To Expand The Women’s World Cup

FIFA President Gianni Infantino responded to critics of the decision to expand the Women’s World Cup to 32 teams on Friday, stating, “I’m sorry, but FIFA was right.”

England and Spain will face off in the final on Sunday in Sydney, capping off a month-long competition that will feature 32 teams for the first time, up from 24 in 2019.

There were concerns that the increased number of participants might result in some inferior teams and, as a result, lopsided scorelines.

However, some of the higher-ranked teams were eliminated early in the World Cup, as Jamaica, Morocco, and South Africa all advanced to the knockout stage for the first time.

Infantino declared 2017 Women’s World Cup the “biggest and best ever” during a FIFA conference on women’s football in Sydney.

“They were saying: it’s not going to work, the levels are too different, you’ll have 15-0 scores, it will be bad for women’s football and its image,” he said of FIFA’s decision to extend the competition to 32 teams.

“But I’m sorry, FIFA was correct, FIFA was correct. “Many countries around the world believed they now had a chance to participate.

“Everyone now believes there is a chance for them to shine on the global stage.”

Infantino stated that football’s governing body had committed $1 billion in women’s football and claimed that “full equality” with men’s football had been achieved.

“This World Cup generated over $570 million in revenue, and so we broke even,” he explained.

“We didn’t lose any money, and we generated the second-highest income of any sport on a global scale — aside from, of course, the men’s World Cup.”

“This shows our strategy wasn’t too bad,” he added, “but of course, we still have a long way to go. “However, we are on the correct track.”
