Belgian Footballer Nainggolan Detained in Cocaine Trafficking Investigation

Former Belgian international Radja Nainggolan was arrested on Monday as part of an investigation into cocaine trafficking through the port of Antwerp, the Brussels prosecutor’s office confirmed.

Authorities conducted multiple raids across the country, leading to the arrest of several suspects, including Nainggolan. Prosecutors revealed that the investigation focuses on the importation of cocaine from South America to Europe via the port of Antwerp and its distribution within Belgium. Further details were not disclosed.

Nainggolan, 36, who hails from Antwerp, recently came out of retirement to join a lower-division Belgian club, extending a career that included 30 national team appearances and six goals. The midfielder, known for his time at clubs like Roma, Inter Milan, and Cagliari, had been without a team since last summer before signing with second-tier Belgian side Lokeren last week. He made an immediate impact, scoring in his debut during a 1-1 draw against K. Lierse.

Previously, Nainggolan returned to Belgium in 2021 to play for Royal Antwerp after leaving Italy. His stint at Antwerp ended in early 2023 following several controversies, including a suspension for smoking an e-cigarette on the bench. Known as a talented yet unconventional player, Nainggolan’s career has been as notable for his performances on the pitch as for his off-field antics.

Arsenal Receive Major Alexander Isak Transfer Update as Arteta Awaits Kroenke’s Decision

Arsenal’s hopes of signing Alexander Isak have taken a hit as Newcastle United prepare to offer the striker a new long-term contract. The 25-year-old Sweden international has been in exceptional form this season, scoring 16 goals and providing four assists in 16 Premier League appearances since returning from injury.

Isak has been instrumental in Newcastle’s rise to fifth place under Eddie Howe, making him a key figure in the Magpies’ plans. According to The Telegraph, Newcastle are determined to keep Isak and are reportedly unwilling to sell him at any price. The club plans to reward his performances with a bumper new deal in the summer.

Arsenal, who have been tracking Isak for some time, would need significant financial backing to launch a bid. However, Isak himself has expressed his happiness at Newcastle, calling it “extra special” to play for the club. Speaking to Swedish media, he emphasized his focus on helping Newcastle achieve their goals this season and dismissed rumors of a potential move.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has also made it clear he wants Isak to stay, despite the club needing to comply with strict financial regulations. Howe said, “Alex has a long contract, and we’re desperate for him to stay and continue scoring goals for us. For now, he just needs to focus on his football.”

With Newcastle determined to keep their star striker, Arsenal may have to look elsewhere to strengthen their frontline.

Napoli Announce Two Signings to Replace Kvaratskhelia

Napoli have confirmed their interest in signing either Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho or Borussia Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi before the January transfer window closes.

The Serie A champions see both players as potential replacements for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who recently joined Paris Saint-Germain.

Speaking to The Standard, Napoli’s sporting director Giovanni Manna said:

“Karim Adeyemi and Alejandro Garnacho are two names that interest us, that we like. They are not the only ones, and we will try to evaluate the opportunities.

“We will certainly not pay off-market prices. Kvara [Kvaratskhelia] must be replaced. We are not holding back. We also have other ideas—let’s see what happens in the next few days.”

In other news, Chelsea Women made history on Sunday by completing the signing of Naomi Girma from San Diego Wave for a record-breaking fee.

The defender has become the world’s first $1 million women’s player, with the two clubs agreeing on a deal worth approximately $1.1 million. This surpasses the previous record of $860,000 set when Racheal Kundananji moved from Madrid CFF to Bay FC.
