Chelsea’s Striker Lukaku Set To Sign For Roma On Season-Long Loan

Chelsea’s striker Romelu Lukaku is set to join Serie A side Roma on a season-long loan.

The deal includes an £8m loan fee, and Roma will cover the 30-year-old Belgium international's wages.

Inter Milan had hoped Lukaku, who is not part of Mauricio Pochettino's plans at Chelsea, would return to the club where he spent last season on loan.

But the forward was unhappy coach Simone Inzaghi did not start him in the Champions League final.

Juventus were also keen to sign Lukaku but needed help making the required changes to their squad.

There are still some details to be finalised, but the agreement for his return to Italy is essentially done.

A source close to Roma owners, the Friedkin family, who took over the club in 2020, said the transfer demonstrated their commitment and desire to "achieve the glory the club and the fans deserve".

The move to Roma means Lukaku will be reunited with Jose Mourinho, who persuaded him to join Manchester United ahead of Chelsea when he moved to Old Trafford from Everton in 2017.

Lukaku moved back to Chelsea from Inter Milan for £97.5m in August 2021 on a five-year deal for his second spell at Stamford Bridge but has struggled to establish himself and has been training away from the first team this season.

He has scored 15 goals in 59 games for the Blues in two spells.

Novak Djokovic Set To Reclaim World Number One Spot From Carlos Alcaraz After Round One Triumph

Novak Djokovic will replace young rival Carlos Alcaraz as the men's world number one after a routine win on his US Open return.

Serbia's Djokovic, who lost the Wimbledon final to Alcaraz, won 6-0 6-2 6-3 against France's Alexandre Muller in Monday's night session in New York.

Djokovic, 36, was not allowed to play in the United States last year because he was not vaccinated against Covid-19.

He has returned knowing another title will be a record-equaling 24th major.

Matching Australian Margaret Court's all-time tally is Djokovic's target, and he made a statement start by breezing past 84th-ranked Muller.

"I started tremendously well; we started quite late, but I was excited to go out on the court - it has been a couple of years," said Djokovic, who will spend a record-extending 390th week at the top of the ATP rankings.

"In the second and third sets, I dropped the level of my serve and had to work for the points a bit more. Nevertheless, I played great, and I liked the level."

Having started at 23:00 local time, the three-time US Open champion showed he did not want to hang around and only dropped eight points in a 23-minute opening set.

A smiling Muller raised both arms in celebration when he finally got on the scoreboard for 2-1 in the second set, but the 26-year-old could not stop Djokovic from moving further ahead.

Muller offered more resistance in the third set before Djokovic won the final four games to wrap up victory in one hour and 34 minutes.

Fulham Sign Leicester’s Castagne On A Four-Year Deal

Fulham have signed Belgium full-back Timothy Castagne from Leicester on a four-year deal.

Castagne, 27, departs Leicester after three seasons at the King Power Stadium.

He has joined the Cottagers for an undisclosed fee until the summer of 2027, with an option to extend his deal by 12 months.

"It's been a long transfer window, but finally, I'm here, and I'm happy to be here," Castagne told FFCtv.

"It's a big relief. I've talked to the manager and can't wait to start training and playing."

The Belgium international made 112 appearances for Leicester, scoring five goals, and featured 37 times in the Premier League last term as they suffered relegation from the Premier League.

Castagne has not played under new Leicester manager Enzo Maresca this campaign and returns to the top flight with Fulham.

The former Atlanta and Genk defender is Marco Silva's fourth addition to the senior squad this summer, following the arrivals of Adama Traore, Raul Jimenez and Calvin Bassey.

Fulham's vice chairman Tony Khan said: "I'm excited to welcome Timothy Castagne to Fulham.

"He's a versatile and very talented defender with great experience in the Premier League and international competition for Belgium.

"I'm pleased that Timothy has committed to a four-year contract with us, and we believe that he'll be an excellent addition to Marco's squad."

Castagne could make Fulham's Premier League debut in Saturday's Manchester City trip.

August 28, 2023 Remo Stars, Enyimba Out Of CAF Champions League as Bendel Insurance Advance

Remo Stars, Enyimba Out Of CAF Champions League as Bendel Insurance Advance

Former champions Enyimba Football Club (FC) of Aba and Remo Stars were eliminated from the 2023/24 CAF Champions League yesterday by Libya’s Al Ahly Benghazi and Ghana’s Medeama FC in the first round of the competition’s qualifying series.

Following remarkable tight defeats in the first legs of the play-offs a week ago, the two Nigerian teams in Africa’s best club championship were tipped to advance to the second round.

The Libyans required a late goal to beat Enyimba 4-3 in Benghazi, while Remo Stars created chances but failed to score the goal that would have tied the game, which they lost 0-1. But they messed up the scripts in the crucial home legs.

Yesterday in Aba, Al Ahly Benghazi shut down their defense and denied Enyimba the solitary goal they needed to stay in the competition.

Remo Stars avenged their goal conceded in Cape Coast at Ikenne, but their nerves let them down in the penalty shootout. As a result, they were eliminated 3-2 after a 1-1 aggregate score.

The Ivoirian referee chalked off the goal that could have saved Remo Stars in the final minute of added time.

Meanwhile, Bendel Insurance, who defeated Algeria’s Aso Chlef in the first round of the CAF Confederation Cup on Saturday, has been drawn in the second round against Moroccan Renaissance Sportive de Berkane (RSB).

Benin’s Bendel Insurance will host the first leg on September 16 at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.
