September 8, 2023 Tchouameni And Thuram Score As France Beat Republic Of Ireland

Tchouameni And Thuram Score As France Beat Republic Of Ireland

The Republic of Ireland’s slim hopes of qualifying for Euro 2024 were further dented as France ran out comfortable winners at Parc des Princes.

Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni’s stunning 19th-minute goal put the hosts ahead at the break.

Substitute Marcus Thuram ensured a home victory early in the second half as the French made it five wins from five.

For the Republic, however, it is a third defeat in four games, leaving them fourth in the group.

Stephen Kenny’s side’s chances of qualifying for next summer’s finals in Germany are remote, but they must regroup quickly and look to revive their campaign at home to the Netherlands on Sunday.

When France visited Dublin in March, Didier Deschamps’ side escaped with a 1-0 win, having been put under intense pressure by a spirited Republic team, with French goalkeeper Mike Maignan in inspired form.

But it was a different story in the French capital, with Thuram’s goal taking the sting out of the game and paving the way for a largely comfortable second half for Les Bleus.

While few expected a Republic victory, their latest defeat leaves them facing an almighty task in their quest to qualify for a tournament for the first time under Kenny.

Coco Gauff Beats Karolina Muchova To Reach US Open Final

American teenager Coco Gauff reached her first US Open singles final by beating Karolina Muchova in a semi-final disrupted by climate protesters.

Gauff, 19, wrapped up a 6-4 7-5 win over Muchova and will face second seed Aryna Sabalenka in Saturday’s final.

Four protesters chanting for the end of fossil fuels had interrupted the Gauff-Muchova match for 49 minutes.

One man glued his feet to the floor on Arthur Ashe Stadium with some chants of “kick them out” towards the protesters.

Security escorted three out but it took longer to the remove the fourth. The United States Tennis Association said all four were in New York Police Department custody.

The drama was confined to the tennis court in the second semi-final where Australian Open champion Sabalenka dug deep to beat Madison Keys 0-6 7-6 (7-1) 7-6 (10-5) and prevent an all-American showpiece in New York.

It will be sixth seed Gauff’s second attempt to win a Grand Slam singles final after finishing runner-up to Poland’s Iga Swiatek at the 2022 French Open.

Gauff could not convert a match point when serving at 5-4, but broke Czech 10th seed Muchova to seal victory after winning a 40-shot rally to create the sixth opportunity.

Gauff raised her fist after clinching the win, signalling her defiance and fight, as the home crowd erupted.

After letting out another roar of celebration, she made a heart sign to the fans as a thank you for helping her get over the line.

Ultimately, the way Gauff finally secured victory was testament to her own resolve and a mental fortitude which she says has developed over a successful North American hard-court season.

Alcaraz Title Defence On Track As He Rolls Into Us Open Semi-Finals

Carlos Alcaraz kept his US Open Title Defence on track after overcoming the challenge of Alexander Zverev to set up a semi-final meeting with third seed Daniil Medvedev.

The top-seeded Alcaraz brushed aside Zverev 6-3 6-2 6-4 and moved closer to becoming the first man to win consecutive titles at Flushing Meadows since Roger Federer collected five in a row from 2004-08.

He also became the second man in the Open era, behind Andre Agassi, to reach the last four at Flushing Meadows three times before turning 21.

Zverev, the German 12th seed, has proved he is back at the top of the sport this fortnight after eight months out following the horror ankle injury he suffered against Rafael Nadal at last year's French Open.

"To see him in the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam playing at his best, I'm so happy," said Alcaraz of his opponent.

The 20-year-old added: "I'm feeling comfortable playing in New York in this court. I'm showing my best level. I'm feeling good physically and ready for a good battle in the semi-final.
