Court Orders Forfeiture of $2.04 Million, Properties, and Shares Linked to Emefiele

The Federal High Court in Lagos has issued an interim forfeiture order for $2.045 million in cash and several properties linked to the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele. Justice Akintayo Aluko also ordered the forfeiture of seven properties associated with the suspended CBN Governor.

These properties include two duplexes on Hakeem Odumosu Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, an undeveloped land on Oyinkan Abayomi Drive, Ikoyi, a bungalow on the same street, a four-bedroom duplex on Probyn Road, Ikoyi, an industrial complex under construction in Agbor, Delta State, eight undetached apartments on Adekunle Lawal Road, Ikoyi, and a duplex on Bank Road, Ikoyi. Additionally, the court ordered the interim forfeiture of two shares in Queensdorf Global Fund Limited Trust.

The order followed an application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), represented by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Rotimi Oyedepo. Oyedepo argued that the funds and properties are reasonably suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities.

He also explained that the application was made under Section 17 of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006, Section 44 (2)(B) of the 1999 Constitution, and the court’s inherent jurisdiction.

According to an affidavit from EFCC Investigator Idi Musa, the investigation revealed that Emefiele and his associates engaged in fraudulent activities, including negotiating kickbacks for foreign exchange allocations. These illicit gains were allegedly used to acquire the properties now forfeited. The affidavit also detailed the involvement of Ifeanyi Omeke, a Deputy General Manager at Zenith Bank, who allegedly facilitated the purchase and documentation of these properties on behalf of Emefiele.

The court granted the interim forfeiture after reviewing the evidence and legal arguments presented.

Government Announces Two-Day Traffic Diversion on Lagos Road

The Lagos State Government has announced a planned traffic diversion at the Ikeja Along Bus Stop on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, between Ile Zik and Conoil Filling Station on the Oshodi-bound lane. The diversion will occur over two days, from Saturday, August 17, 2024, to Sunday, August 18, 2024, between 12 midnight and 4 am each day.

The diversion is necessary to allow workers to safely demolish the old pedestrian bridge in the area. The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation shared this information on Thursday via their X handle.

According to the announcement, only one lane will be available to motorists from Ile Zik Bus Stop to Conoil Filling Station on the Oshodi-bound side of the road during the demolition. However, the traffic diversion will not affect motorists on the Dopemu/Abule Egba-bound side of the road.

The state Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, assured that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be on the ground to manage vehicular movement and minimize any inconvenience. He urged motorists to be patient, explaining that the closure is part of the traffic management plan by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority to ensure the safe removal of the old pedestrian bridge. The affected lanes will be cordoned off with jersey barriers and protective nets to ensure the safety of motorists and commuters during the demolition.

NCDC Reports 39 Mpox Cases in Nigeria, No Deaths

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported 39 confirmed cases of mpox with no deaths across 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory. NCDC Director General, Jide Idris, disclosed this during a press briefing on Thursday, following the declaration of mpox as a public health emergency of international concern.

Idris stated that the NCDC is intensifying its surveillance efforts nationwide to quickly identify and respond to any new cases. All port health services at Nigeria’s five international airports, ten seaports, and 51 land and foot crossing borders have been placed on high alert. Additionally, certain states, including Lagos, Enugu, Kano, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Adamawa, Taraba, and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, have been prioritized for heightened vigilance.

On Wednesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the mpox outbreak in Africa a global public health emergency due to the rising number of cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and its spread to neighboring countries. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced that an emergency committee had met and advised that the situation constitutes a public health emergency of international concern, a recommendation he accepted.

Tedros emphasized that the situation requires global attention, and WHO is committed to coordinating a global response, working closely with affected countries to prevent transmission, treat those infected, and save lives.

The decision follows the African Union’s health watchdog’s declaration of a public health emergency over the growing outbreak. Mpox, which was first identified in humans in the DRC in 1970, has now spread to other countries. Tedros noted that the more than 14,000 cases and 524 deaths reported this year in the DRC alone have already surpassed last year's total.
