Building Collapse in Kano Leaves Two Dead, Two Injured

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed on Thursday that two people have died and two others were injured after a two-storey building collapsed in Noman’s Land, Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State.

Dr. Nuraddeen Abdullahi, the NEMA Coordinator for the Kano Territorial Office, disclosed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano. He stated, "The agency received a distress call today at about 2:00 a.m. from a good Samaritan reporting that a two-storey building had collapsed at Noman’s Land Quarters in Kano.

Lagos Extends Work-From-Home Policy for Additional Three Months

The Lagos State Government has extended its work-from-home policy for civil servants in response to the rising cost of living. In a statement released on Wednesday, Lagos State Head of Service, Bode Agoro, announced that the "flexible work initiative" has been extended for another three months to mitigate the impact of the petrol subsidy removal.

"Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has graciously approved the extension of the flexible work-from-home initiative for an additional three months, effective from September 4th to December 3rd, 2024," the statement read.

Agoro also urged all accounting officers to ensure compliance with the directive and promote the policy across the state's civil service.

This extension follows the governor's earlier announcement in February, where workers on grade levels 01 to 14 were permitted to work from home for two days a week, while those on grade levels 15 to 17 were allowed one day of remote work per week.

FUNAAB Student Abducted in Lagos Found Murdered by Kidnapper

A student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Christiana Idowu, who was kidnapped between Ikorodu and Yaba in Lagos State, has reportedly been murdered by her abductor. The President of the FUNAAB Student Union Government, Ibrahim Adeyemi, confirmed the tragic news during a phone conversation on Thursday.

Adeyemi stated, "The Union can confirm that she was reportedly killed by her abductor. We will address the matter soon."

According to a family source, the kidnappers had initially demanded a ransom of N3 million for Christiana’s release after abducting her on August 26. Christiana was traveling from her home in Itaoluwo, Ikorodu, to the University of Lagos, Yaba, where she was undergoing industrial training when she was kidnapped.

The family source revealed that after Christiana became unreachable, the abductors contacted her family using her phone and demanded the ransom. Following several pleas, the kidnappers agreed to accept a reduced payment of N350,000, which the family transferred. However, despite receiving the money, the abductors refused to release her.

In a now-viral post on X (formerly Twitter), a user, @letter_to_jack, shared that intelligence operatives traced the abductor's location using the BVN and account details associated with the ransom payment. The investigation began on August 26, and by August 29, the operatives confirmed the identity of the account holder who withdrew N100,000 from the ransom payment.

Further investigation led operatives to a location in Ikorodu, Lagos, where Christiana's family also resides. It was discovered that the suspect had a mutual relationship with Christiana, as evidenced by their interactions on social media. The operatives tracked the suspect’s phone activities and eventually located his parents' house in Ikorodu.

Efforts to reach Christiana's family for further comments were unsuccessful, as calls and messages went unanswered. The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, also did not respond to messages or calls at the time of filing this report.

TUC Warns Petrol Price Hike Will Deepen Workers’ Poverty

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has strongly opposed the recent increase in petrol prices, warning that it will worsen poverty among workers. In a statement released on Wednesday, TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo called on the Federal Government to "immediately reverse these decisions, implement policies to strengthen the naira, and take urgent action to ease the suffering of Nigerians."

The union criticized the price hike, stating that it was "implemented without consultation with key stakeholders," showing a lack of regard for the well-being of the Nigerian people, particularly the working class, who will feel the greatest impact of the decision.

"The sudden increase in fuel and electricity costs will only deepen the existing challenges, leading to greater hardship and potential social unrest," Osifo said.

He urged the government to act quickly to reverse the price hikes, implement policies to stabilize the naira, and take decisive steps to improve the living conditions of its citizens.

"The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria is dedicated to defending the rights and interests of Nigerian workers and will continue to push for policies that promote social justice, fair wages, and a decent working environment," Osifo added.
