Court Bars Police, SSS from Inviting, Arresting, or Detaining Rivers COS Ehie

A Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt issued a ruling on Wednesday, barring the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS), and their agents from arresting, inviting, or detaining Edison Ehie, Chief of Staff to the suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The order also applies to the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, the Nigeria Police Force, the Police Service Commission, and the State Director of SSS in Rivers State, all named as defendants in the case.

Justice I. Igwe delivered the ruling after hearing arguments from Damian Okoro, SAN, counsel for Ehie, with no representation from the defendants. The court granted Ehie permission to serve legal documents to the defendants outside the court’s jurisdiction, specifically in Abuja, via Red Star Express Courier Service. The judge also issued an interim injunction preventing the defendants and their associates from further actions against Ehie related to an alleged arson at the Rivers State House of Assembly on March 29, 2023, or statements made by Dr. George Nwaeke, former Head of Service, around March 27, 2025, or by anyone else thereafter. This restriction holds pending the hearing of a motion for an interlocutory injunction.

The court further mandated both parties to maintain the status quo as it existed on March 30, 2025, until the motion is heard. Ehie was required to provide an undertaking of N2 million to compensate the defendants if the case is later deemed frivolous. The substantive matter was adjourned to April 30, 2025, for further proceedings.

Natasha: INEC Should Have Dismissed Recall Petition Sooner

On Thursday, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for dismissing a petition aimed at recalling her as the representative of Kogi Central Senatorial District. Speaking in an interview, the senator argued that INEC should have rejected the petition much earlier than its April 3, 2025, decision.

“I’m a lawyer and a senator—I know how Nigeria operates. The key thing for me is that this recall process has been halted,” she said. “I commend INEC, though I think they should have discarded it from the start. To me, it was void ab initio. The Electoral Act doesn’t explicitly say a petition should be thrown out for lacking an address, but what if the address is fake?”

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader pointed out that many addresses listed in the recall petition were likely fabricated, noting that most homes in her district lack proper labeling. “INEC counted 208,000 signatures, but I’d wager that during verification, they’d struggle to find even 500 people to confirm signing it,” she asserted.

Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged that Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Governor Usman Ododo, and former Governor Yahaya Bello were behind the unsuccessful recall effort. In a highly anticipated statement on Thursday, INEC confirmed that the petition failed to satisfy Section 69(a) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended). “No further action will be taken on the recall of the Senator,” the commission stated.

Niger Delta Congress Urges Protest Against Emergency Rule in Rivers

The Niger Delta Congress (NDC) has scheduled a peaceful demonstration for Monday, April 7, 2025, in reaction to the suspension of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the State House of Assembly. Set to occur at Isaac Boro Park starting at 7:00 AM, the protest seeks to press for the reinstatement of democratic rule in the state.

In a statement issued on April 3, the NDC denounced the imposition of a state of emergency and the removal of elected officials, labeling it a direct assault on democracy and the rights of Rivers State residents. Mudlaga Ogboru, the NDC’s National Spokesperson, remarked, “These measures subvert the people’s will and jeopardize the Niger Delta’s stability.”

The organization has called on the public to participate in the protest while adhering strictly to legal guidelines, stressing the importance of solidarity and fairness. “United, we stand stronger in our quest for justice,” the statement declared.

The ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State has sparked significant concern, with many scrutinizing the legitimacy and intentions behind the suspension of critical state institutions. As tensions escalate, attention will focus on Port Harcourt next Monday to observe the protest’s developments.

INEC Dismisses Petition To Recall Senator Natasha, Declares It Indequate

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has thrown out a petition to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from Kogi Central, saying it doesn’t meet the rules. In a brief statement on Thursday, INEC explained on its X account that the petition didn’t follow Section 69(a) of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution.

In a follow-up, INEC’s National Commissioner Sam Olumekun broke it down: “The Constitution says a recall petition needs signatures from more than half the registered voters in the senator’s district. Kogi Central has 474,554 voters, so that’s at least 237,278 signatures. The petitioners only got 208,132 across 902 polling units in 57 areas and five local governments—not enough.”

Natasha’s constituents started the recall after she was suspended by the Senate for breaking its rules. They said they didn’t want to lose representation since the 45-year-old senator was sidelined. She’s been in the news lately after accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment—something he denies—leading to her suspension.

On Tuesday, despite a state ban on rallies, Natasha got a big welcome from supporters in Okehi, Kogi State. Speaking to the crowd, she said, “No one and nothing can keep me from coming home. I’m an Ebira woman—this is my land.”
