Mexican Mayor Assassinated Just Days After Taking Office

The mayor of a city in southern Mexico has been murdered just days after taking office, authorities confirmed on Sunday, adding to the troubling trend of violence against politicians in the country. Alejandro Arcos, the newly-elected mayor of Chilpancingo, was killed less than a week after assuming office. Guerrero State governor, Evelyn Salgado, expressed her outrage on social media, though no further details were provided regarding the circumstances of his death.

Local media reports suggest that Arcos was killed, although there has been no official confirmation. Arcos, who was elected in June as part of an opposition coalition, represented the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). The PRI condemned his murder as a "cowardly crime" and called for swift justice, stating, "Enough of violence and impunity! The people of Guerrero do not deserve to live in fear."

Arcos’ death follows the assassination of another city official, Francisco Tapia, just days earlier. According to PRI president Alejandro Moreno, both officials had been in office for less than a week. "They were young and honest leaders who aimed to bring progress to their community," Moreno shared on social media.

Guerrero, one of Mexico's most violence-stricken and impoverished states, has been ravaged by years of cartel-related violence, as rival groups battle for control of drug production and trafficking routes. The state, home to the once-glamorous Acapulco, saw 1,890 murders in 2023 alone.

Nationwide, Mexico has witnessed more than 450,000 murders and tens of thousands of disappearances since the government launched its military crackdown on drug trafficking in 2006. Politicians, especially those at the local level, have often been caught in the crossfire of this ongoing conflict.

Addressing the escalating violence remains a critical challenge for Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico's first female president, who took office on October 1st. Sheinbaum, former mayor of Mexico City, has vowed to continue her predecessor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s "hugs, not bullets" policy, focusing on social reform to address the root causes of crime. She is expected to reveal her security strategy on Tuesday.

In the lead-up to the June elections, violence targeted politicians across the country, with official records showing at least 24 political figures were murdered during the campaign season.

IGP Orders Reopening of Rivers LGA Secretariats After Fubara Swears In APP Leaders

The Rivers State Police Command has reopened all 23 Local Government Area Secretariats in the state following the recent election and swearing-in of new chairmen.

This was confirmed in a statement released by the command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, on Monday morning. She noted that the newly deployed Commissioner of Police, CP Mustapha Bala, acting on the directives of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, ordered the immediate withdrawal of police personnel who had previously sealed and secured the council secretariats.

The secretariats were initially sealed in June due to a disagreement between the Caretaker Committee Chairmen loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the former local government chairmen, who were aligned with Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

This development followed Governor Fubara's swearing-in of 23 newly elected local government chairmen. The ceremony, held on Sunday at the Executive Council Chambers of the Government House in Port Harcourt, took place a day after the Rivers State Independent National Electoral Commission (RSIEC) conducted elections at the grassroots level.

POLICE ORDERS UNSEALING OF LGA SECRETARIATS, WITHDRAWAL OF DEPLOYED PERSONNEL WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT

In view of the recent political developments in Rivers State, the newly deployed Commissioner of Police, CP Bala Mustapha, hereby conveys the directives of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, for the immediate withdrawal of all police personnel previously deployed to seal and safeguard the Local Government Secretariats in the state. This decision is in line with the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to ensure neutrality and the smooth functioning of democratic institutions.

Consequently, the IGP has ordered the unsealing of the Local Government Secretariats, which were earlier secured by police personnel. The police will only be redeployed to these locations in the event of any crisis or breakdown of law and order, in which case emergency measures will be swiftly implemented to restore normalcy.

The Rivers State Police Command assures the public of its readiness to maintain peace and order across the state and will continue to act professionally in discharging its duties. We urge all residents and stakeholders to remain calm and law-abiding as the situation evolves.

Rivers LG Elections: APP Secures 22 of 23 Chairmanship Seats

The Action People’s Party (APP) secured 22 out of 23 chairmanship positions in the recently concluded local government elections in Rivers State.

The Chief Electoral Officer of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Adolphus Enebeli, announced the results on Saturday in Port Harcourt. However, the commission has temporarily suspended the announcement of results for the Etche Local Government Area, as collation is still ongoing.

Enebeli also stated that the results for the 319 councillorship seats will be announced along with the Etche chairmanship position once the collation process is complete.

Despite some challenges, Enebeli described the election as free, fair, and credible. According to him, polling ended at 3 p.m., and the turnout of voters was impressive. He commended the residents for their patriotism and active participation.

The announcement of the results was witnessed by members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), chairmen of state independent electoral commissions from across the country, and members of the Nigerian Bar Association, who acted as observers.

Due to logistical challenges, the results were declared at the Ministry of Justice Hall within the State Secretariat complex, instead of the RSIEC office on Aba Road.
