NNPCL Signs 10-Year Gas Supply Agreement with Dangote Refinery

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has announced that its subsidiary, NNPC Gas Marketing Limited (NGML), has finalized a Gas Sale and Purchase Agreement (GSPA) with Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE.

In a statement on Wednesday, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPCL, Olufemi Soneye, confirmed the signing. The agreement was executed on Tuesday at the Dangote Corporate Head Office in Falomo, Lagos State, with NGML Managing Director, Barr. Justin Ezeala, and Dangote Group President/CEO, Aliko Dangote, signing on behalf of their respective organizations. The agreement secures a supply of natural gas to the Dangote Refinery in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, for both power generation and as feedstock.

Soneye emphasized that this partnership aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to leveraging Nigeria’s gas resources to stimulate industrial growth and economic prosperity. This agreement, noted as one of NGML's most substantial commitments without any capital expenditure (CAPEX) from NNPCL, is regarded as a groundbreaking achievement in Nigeria’s gas distribution history.

Under the agreement terms, NGML will provide 100 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCF/D) of natural gas, with 50 MMSCF/D as firm supply and another 50 MMSCF/D as interruptible supply, for an initial term of 10 years with options for extension and scalability.

NNPCL highlighted that this collaboration represents a major step in supporting the Dangote Refinery’s operations while advancing Nigeria’s domestic gas utilization goals. The statement read, “This milestone for both NNPC Ltd. and Dangote Refinery underscores their commitment to enhancing local production and providing essential products for Nigerians. It further reflects NGML’s dedication to business excellence and fulfilling NNPC Ltd.’s core mandate of securing Nigeria’s energy needs through strategic gas projects nationwide.”

Wike Claims Adeyanju Asked to Be PDP Publicity Secretary but Now Unemployed

Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has criticized lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju in response to his condemnation of recent demolitions in Abuja. Adeyanju, alongside activist Vincent Martins Otse (known as VeryDarkMark), led a protest last Friday against Wike's actions, specifically the demolition of Ruga, a settlement along Airport Road.

Adeyanju argued that the demolition was unjustifiable and called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the matter.

In an interview on Wednesday, Wike dismissed Adeyanju’s criticisms, describing him as "jobless" and claiming that Adeyanju had previously asked to be appointed as the Publicity Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)—a request Wike says he turned down.

"I saw this young man, Adeyanju, from Kogi State. He approached me, wanting to become the PDP National Publicity Secretary, and I said no. I have no regrets. Now, he has suddenly taken up the role of a civil society activist because he has no job," Wike stated.

Falana Criticizes FCT Minister’s Decision to Gift Judges Houses and Cars

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, has criticized the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for gifting houses to judges, arguing that such gestures from the executive to the judiciary are inappropriate. In October, Wike launched a project for the construction of 40 judges’ quarters in Abuja’s Katampe District, sparking debate over ethical concerns.

During a recent interview, Falana stated that it is improper for members of the judiciary to receive gifts from the executive, especially judges who are supposed to maintain independence. "The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory operates similarly to a state governor under Section 299 of the Constitution. He cannot simply decide to build houses and allocate them to judges across various courts," Falana asserted.

Falana emphasized that judicial autonomy, enshrined in the Constitution, enables the judiciary to manage its own finances, which means judges shouldn’t need to rely on the executive for cars, houses, or other resources. He also criticized Wike’s recent demolition of private properties in the FCT, labeling it “primitive” and a violation of legal processes.

Explaining the procedure for such demolitions, Falana noted that, under the Urban and Regional Planning Act in the FCT, property disputes must first go to the Urban and Regional Planning Board. Property owners who lose may appeal to the Urban and Regional Tribunal, and only then, if unsuccessful, can the High Court issue a demolition order.

Gunmen Attack Army Checkpoint in Abia, Kill Two Soldiers

Gunmen attacked an army checkpoint early Wednesday morning at Ekenobizi, a border community between Abia and Imo states in Umuopara, Umuahia South Local Government Area, resulting in the deaths of two soldiers.

A military source, speaking anonymously, stated that the attack occurred around 6:18 am when the gunmen arrived in a white Lexus (350/400) model. The exact number of attackers, however, could not be confirmed.

In a statement on Wednesday, Lieutenant Colonel Jonah Unuakhalu of the Joint Task Force South East Operation UDO KA confirmed the incident, saying, “In the early hours of today, 13 November 2024, troops stationed at a checkpoint along the Umuahia-Owerri Road in Umuahia South came under attack by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).”

Unuakhalu added that despite the assault, the troops successfully repelled the attackers, forcing them to retreat in disarray, abandoning one Sienna and one Lexus Jeep used in the attack. Unfortunately, two soldiers lost their lives in the firefight.

The Joint Task Force appealed to residents, particularly those in Abia State, for any credible information to assist in tracking down the attackers and combating criminal elements in the region. The force reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property in line with global best practices and the rules of engagement.
