Governor Abiodun Approves N77,000 Minimum Wage for Ogun State Workers

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has approved a new minimum wage of N77,000 for the state's lowest-paid workers, with immediate effect. This decision followed a meeting between the governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, and the leadership of the Organized Labour in Ogun State, which includes the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC). The meeting centered around the implementation of the new wage.

Speaking through the SSG, Governor Abiodun affirmed that no worker in Ogun State should earn less than N77,000 starting from October. He emphasized that his administration is committed to improving the welfare of the people and has taken proactive steps to ease their economic challenges.

The governor also mentioned his engagement with the private sector, urging them to adopt similar wage adjustments for their workers, recognizing that private sector employees are also affected by the current economic realities. He plans to establish a monitoring team to ensure private employers implement fair wages, ensuring no worker is underpaid.

Ogun State NLC Chairman, Comrade Hameed Benco, expressed satisfaction with the governor’s decision, noting that N77,000 is currently the highest minimum wage in the country. Benco compared it to other states, where new minimum wages range between N70,000 and N70,250. He also highlighted the government's agreement that the new basic salary will not be taxed.

Comrade Akeem Lasisi of the TUC and Comrade Isa Olude of the JNC praised the government's worker-friendly approach, adding that further announcements on adjustments for pensioners and other issues will follow after consultations.

The Ogun State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, commended the governor's responsiveness and concern for workers' welfare, expressing confidence that this move will boost employee morale and enhance their commitment to implementing government policies.

Nationwide Blackout as National Grid Suffers Another Collapse

On Monday, the national grid collapsed again, leaving millions of Nigerians without electricity. Power distribution companies nationwide reported that the collapse occurred around 6:48 p.m., causing widespread blackouts.

Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), which serves parts of Lagos, informed its customers via their X handle:
"Dear Valued Customer, kindly be informed that there was a system collapse at 18:48 hrs, resulting in a loss of power supply across our network. We are working with our partners to ensure a speedy restoration and will provide updates once power is restored. Kindly bear with us."

Similarly, the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) notified its customers of the "general system collapse at 18:48 hrs on October 14th, 2024," which affected power supply across its network. The EEDC confirmed that the outage had impacted all interface TCN stations, disrupting services to customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States.

Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company also acknowledged the outage and assured its customers that efforts were underway to restore normalcy. Abuja Disco echoed these sentiments, explaining that the grid collapse at 6:58 p.m. was responsible for the blackout in their franchise areas. They reassured customers that they were working with relevant stakeholders to stabilize and restore the grid.

This marks yet another grid collapse in 2024, following previous incidents on February 4th, March 28th, April 15th, July 6th, and August 5th. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has yet to comment on this latest failure.

In an April briefing to the Senate Committee on Power, Nafisat Ali, Executive Director of the Independent System Operator (ISO) at TCN, highlighted the various causes of Nigeria’s frequent grid collapses. She attributed the failures to issues spanning the entire power sector, including inadequate gas supply, poor coordination between plants and pipelines, and low generation availability.

Libyan Authorities Bows to Pressure, Super Eagles to Return to Nigeria

The Super Eagles, Nigeria's national football team, are set to return home after being stranded in Libya for over 15 hours. Following pressure from external bodies, the Libyan authorities agreed to refuel the team's chartered jet and clear their airspace.

The players and officials were abandoned at Al Abraq International Airport without access to food, water, or internet. However, sports journalist Adepoju Tobi Samuel, also known as OgaNlaMedia, confirmed that the team is now en route to Nigeria.

He shared on X: "After pressure from several quarters, the Libyan government has cleared the ValueJet flight for takeoff and sold aviation fuel to the airline." The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) insisted the flight take the team directly back to Nigeria, avoiding a landing in Benghazi.
