Tragedy Strikes as 94 Killed in Jigawa Petrol Tanker Explosion

A tragic petrol tanker explosion in Majiya Town, Taura Local Government Area, Jigawa State, claimed the lives of over 90 people and left 50 others hospitalized in a devastating incident early Wednesday morning.

The explosion occurred around 12:30 AM when the tanker, en route from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State, lost control near Khadija University, Majiya. According to the Police Public Relations Officer of the Jigawa State Command, DSP Lawan Adam, the tragedy unfolded as residents rushed to collect spilt petrol from the overturned tanker.

"The residents were scooping fuel when the tanker exploded, igniting a massive inferno that claimed 94 lives instantly," DSP Adam explained. He added that 50 others, suffering severe burns, were rushed to Ringim and Hadejia General Hospitals for urgent medical care.

Authorities began mass burials for the victims on Wednesday morning, with the entire community engulfed in mourning. DSP Adam called the incident a "horrific tragedy" and warned about the dangers of collecting fuel from accident scenes.

Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, AT Abdullahi, expressed his deep condolences to the bereaved families and the people of the state. "This is a heartbreaking moment for us all," he said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by this tragedy."

The commissioner stressed the need for increased public awareness about the dangers of petrol explosions and urged residents to report such incidents to authorities rather than putting themselves at risk.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with many struggling to save those trapped in the flames. One resident, Sani Umar, who narrowly escaped, recounted the horror: "It was terrifying. People were running in all directions, screaming for help. The fire spread so quickly that many couldn’t escape."

Authorities have called for greater caution and safety measures to prevent such devastating incidents in the future.

TCN: Efforts Underway to Restore National Grid

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced on Tuesday that efforts to restore the national grid, which collapsed on Monday, are progressing and nearly complete. In a statement, TCN’s Public Affairs General Manager, Ndidi Mbah, explained that the grid experienced a partial disturbance on Monday, October 14, 2024, at around 6:48 pm.

According to the statement, the recovery process began immediately, with Azura Power Station initiating the blackstart. By 10:24 am on Tuesday, the restoration had reached an advanced stage, but encountered a minor setback, delaying progress. Despite the challenge, Mbah assured that TCN continued working on the grid recovery, restoring power to about 90% of its substations across the country.

The company confirmed that electricity supply had been restored to the Abuja region and other key distribution load centers nationwide. Mbah added that the Ibom Gas generating station, which was isolated from the grid during the disturbance, maintained power supply to areas in the South-South region, including Eket, Ekim, Uyo, and Itu 132kV substations.

An investigation into the cause of the collapse will be conducted once the grid is fully restored. This marks another grid collapse in 2024, with previous incidents occurring on February 4, March 28, April 15, July 6, and August 5.

In April, Nafisat Ali, Executive Director of the Independent System Operator (ISO) department at TCN, highlighted several factors contributing to Nigeria's frequent grid failures. She attributed the collapses to issues across all power sectors, including insufficient gas supply, poor coordination between plants and pipelines, and low generation availability.

Reps Urge FG to Invite Libyan Ambassador for Explanation Regarding Super Eagles Situation

In response to the mistreatment of the Nigerian Super Eagles in Libya, the House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to invite the Libyan ambassador to Nigeria for clarification. The issue was raised as a matter of urgent national importance by Honourable Kabiru Ahmadu, the chairman of the House Committee on Sports. Additionally, the House is urging the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to file a formal complaint with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).

The House commended the NFF for its decision to boycott the match that was scheduled for today. This development follows the Super Eagles' report of safety concerns after being stranded at Al-Abraq Airport for over 13 hours without access to essential necessities such as food, water, or a place to rest.

The situation escalated when photos of the team sleeping on benches at the airport circulated, drawing significant public outrage. Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong described the conditions at Al-Abraq Airport as “disgraceful,” alleging that Libyan authorities were deliberately playing "mind games" by revoking their landing permit and leaving the team without basic amenities. This mistreatment ultimately led Nigeria to withdraw from the match, originally set for Tuesday, October 15.
