Kano Ward Exco Suspends APC Chairman Ganduje

Members of Ganduje Ward in the Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State have suspended Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC). This decision was announced by the Executive Council of Ganduje Ward, led by Haruna Gwanjo, during a press briefing held in Kano on Monday.

Gwanjo cited corruption allegations surrounding Ganduje's involvement in a long-standing dollar case as the reason for his suspension. A viral video from 2017 purportedly showed Ganduje receiving bundles of dollar notes as a bribe from a contractor and concealing them in the folds of his garment. Despite initially denying the video's authenticity and maintaining his innocence, Ganduje's case was revisited by the administration of Governor Abba Yusuf of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

The Kano High Court is set to arraign Ganduje on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, on charges related to bribery, diversion, and misappropriation of funds, including allegations of accepting $413,000 and N1.38 billion in bribes. Alongside Ganduje, his wife and six others will also face arraignment, as announced by the Kano State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Haruna Dederi.

The Yusuf administration, which initiated the criminal proceedings against the eight respondents, has expressed its readiness to present 15 witnesses to testify before Justice Usman Na’aba of the State High Court.

Nigeria’s inflation increases to 33.20% in March

In March 2024, Nigeria's inflation rate climbed to 33.20 percent, marking an increase from 31.70 percent in February 2024. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) revealed this in its March Consumer Price Index and Inflation report. Compared to February 2024, the headline inflation rate for March 2024 rose by 1.50 percent.

Year-on-year, the headline inflation rate stood at 11.16 percent in March 2024, surpassing the 22.04 percent recorded in March 2023. This indicates a notable increase in the inflation rate for March 2024 compared to the same period in the previous year.

Additionally, on a month-on-month basis, the headline inflation rate for March 2024 was 3.02 percent, slightly lower by 0.10 percent compared to February 2024's rate of 3.12 percent. This suggests that the pace of increase in the average price level in March 2024 was slower than that of February 2024.

The data indicates the eighth consecutive rise in the inflation rate since the inauguration of President Bola Tinubu's administration on May 29, 2023.

April 15, 2024 Again, Nigeria’s Electricity Grid Collapses

Again, Nigeria’s Electricity Grid Collapses

Once again, Nigeria faced a setback in its electricity supply as the national grid experienced a collapse on Monday, plunging several cities into darkness. The grid failure occurred at approximately 2:42 a.m., leading to a significant drop in power generation to 64.70 megawatts.

Jos Electricity Distribution Company (Jos DisCo) confirmed the incident, attributing the loss of power to the national grid's failure in the early hours of Monday. In a statement by Friday Elijah, the Head of Corporate Communications at Jos DisCo, the company acknowledged the outage and assured customers of efforts to restore normal power supply once the grid stabilizes.

This recent collapse comes shortly after a similar incident in March, highlighting the ongoing challenges within Nigeria's power sector. Issues such as regulatory uncertainty, gas supply constraints, transmission system limitations, and inadequate planning continue to plague the sector despite the government's privatization efforts in 2013, which aimed to enhance efficiency.

Since privatization, the national grid has experienced over 140 collapses, reflecting the persistent difficulties faced in maintaining a reliable electricity supply. Ndidi Mbah, the General Manager of Public Affairs at the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), indicated that updates on the situation would be provided to the public in due course.

A Decade On: Families Hold Vigil, Hoping for Safe Return of 92 Chibok Girls

Ten years have passed since the kidnapping of 276 students from Government Girls’ Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State. Recently, survivors, families, and supporters gathered at the school's multipurpose hall for an inter-faith prayer service, focusing on the 92 girls who are still missing.

Emotions were mixed as speakers reflected on the events since 2014, with many questionings why these girls have not yet been rescued. Chibok, situated near the Sambisa Forest, remains haunted by the tragedy.

Despite efforts, only 179 of the abducted students have been accounted for, with some returning as mothers or widows of insurgents. The anguish of parents whose daughters remain missing was palpable during the prayer event, where religious leaders and families shared their heart-wrenching stories.

Seven years post-abduction, the school underwent renovations and transitioned into a day school. Plans are underway to restore its original status as a boarding school for both genders. Brigadier General Bede Amako assured heightened security measures to safeguard the students and Chibok community against future attacks.

According to parental accounts, 271 students were initially taken, with 57 escaping shortly after, and 103 subsequently released with government intervention. Additionally, 20 girls were freed through state efforts, leaving 92 still in captivity.
