Coroner Magistrate Mikhail Kadiri concluded that 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni, a student at Dowen College in Lagos, died of natural causes. During the six-hour verdict delivery, the coroner declared that although the death was natural, it could have been avoided, citing negligence on the part of the boy's parents and medical caregivers as contributing factors.
Kadiri stated that the evidence indicated Sylvester experienced severe, unnecessary suffering due to this negligence, leading to his preventable demise. Throughout the inquest, which commenced on January 15, 2022, thirty-two witnesses testified, including Sylvester's parents, Dowen College management, staff, students, police officers, and medical professionals.
The inquest relied on findings from two autopsies performed in Warri, Delta State, and Lagos, which identified septicemia as the cause of death, a condition that urgently needed medical attention but was not timely provided. Magistrate Kadiri highlighted that the treatment required massive doses of antibiotics, fluids, and blood transfusions, which Sylvester did not receive.
Furthermore, Kadiri cleared the school and five senior students accused of bullying and poisoning Sylvester of any wrongdoing. He noted improvements at Dowen College since the incident and recommended better documentation of student movements and psychological assessments for students.
In his recommendations, Kadiri emphasized the importance of parents taking their children's health seriously and called for improved coordination between police and medical teams to prevent similar tragedies.
