April 16, 2024 Sylvester Oromoni: Coroner Says Death Was Natural But Avoidable

Sylvester Oromoni: Coroner Says Death Was Natural But Avoidable

Coroner Magistrate Mikhail Kadiri concluded that 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni, a student at Dowen College in Lagos, died of natural causes. During the six-hour verdict delivery, the coroner declared that although the death was natural, it could have been avoided, citing negligence on the part of the boy's parents and medical caregivers as contributing factors.

Kadiri stated that the evidence indicated Sylvester experienced severe, unnecessary suffering due to this negligence, leading to his preventable demise. Throughout the inquest, which commenced on January 15, 2022, thirty-two witnesses testified, including Sylvester's parents, Dowen College management, staff, students, police officers, and medical professionals.

The inquest relied on findings from two autopsies performed in Warri, Delta State, and Lagos, which identified septicemia as the cause of death, a condition that urgently needed medical attention but was not timely provided. Magistrate Kadiri highlighted that the treatment required massive doses of antibiotics, fluids, and blood transfusions, which Sylvester did not receive.

Furthermore, Kadiri cleared the school and five senior students accused of bullying and poisoning Sylvester of any wrongdoing. He noted improvements at Dowen College since the incident and recommended better documentation of student movements and psychological assessments for students.

In his recommendations, Kadiri emphasized the importance of parents taking their children's health seriously and called for improved coordination between police and medical teams to prevent similar tragedies.

April 15, 2024 Naira Strengthens To N1,000 Per Dollar In The FX Black Market

Naira Strengthens To N1,000 Per Dollar In The FX Black Market

As Monday's foreign exchange market opened, the Naira saw an appreciation to N1000 per US dollar. This information was revealed by Mistila Dayyabu, a Bureau De Change operator. Dayyabu further anticipated that the Naira would continue to strengthen throughout the week, possibly dipping below the N1000 per dollar threshold.

This development follows closely after the Naira was recognized as the top-performing currency in April by Goldman Sachs. Notably, the Naira experienced a significant increase of N60 against the dollar following the Eid-el-Fitr holidays.

Over recent months, the Naira has been on a steady upward trajectory against the dollar, transitioning from N1,900 in February to its current rate of N1000 at the parallel market. Despite this positive trend, many Nigerians have expressed concerns that the Naira's appreciation has not translated into lower prices for goods and services.

The latest inflation report from the National Bureau of Statistics highlights a concerning increase, with food inflation reaching 40.01 percent in March 2024.

Kano Ward Exco Suspends APC Chairman Ganduje

Members of Ganduje Ward in the Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State have suspended Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC). This decision was announced by the Executive Council of Ganduje Ward, led by Haruna Gwanjo, during a press briefing held in Kano on Monday.

Gwanjo cited corruption allegations surrounding Ganduje's involvement in a long-standing dollar case as the reason for his suspension. A viral video from 2017 purportedly showed Ganduje receiving bundles of dollar notes as a bribe from a contractor and concealing them in the folds of his garment. Despite initially denying the video's authenticity and maintaining his innocence, Ganduje's case was revisited by the administration of Governor Abba Yusuf of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

The Kano High Court is set to arraign Ganduje on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, on charges related to bribery, diversion, and misappropriation of funds, including allegations of accepting $413,000 and N1.38 billion in bribes. Alongside Ganduje, his wife and six others will also face arraignment, as announced by the Kano State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Haruna Dederi.

The Yusuf administration, which initiated the criminal proceedings against the eight respondents, has expressed its readiness to present 15 witnesses to testify before Justice Usman Na’aba of the State High Court.

Nigeria’s inflation increases to 33.20% in March

In March 2024, Nigeria's inflation rate climbed to 33.20 percent, marking an increase from 31.70 percent in February 2024. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) revealed this in its March Consumer Price Index and Inflation report. Compared to February 2024, the headline inflation rate for March 2024 rose by 1.50 percent.

Year-on-year, the headline inflation rate stood at 11.16 percent in March 2024, surpassing the 22.04 percent recorded in March 2023. This indicates a notable increase in the inflation rate for March 2024 compared to the same period in the previous year.

Additionally, on a month-on-month basis, the headline inflation rate for March 2024 was 3.02 percent, slightly lower by 0.10 percent compared to February 2024's rate of 3.12 percent. This suggests that the pace of increase in the average price level in March 2024 was slower than that of February 2024.

The data indicates the eighth consecutive rise in the inflation rate since the inauguration of President Bola Tinubu's administration on May 29, 2023.
