Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced another round of price cuts for both diesel and aviation fuel, now priced at N940 and N980 per liter, respectively. This reduction follows closely on the heels of a previous price drop to N1,000 just two weeks ago.

Anthony Chiejina, the Head of Communication, emphasized that these adjustments align with the company's commitment to alleviating economic challenges in Nigeria. He highlighted a strategic partnership with MRS Oil and Gas stations, ensuring affordable fuel prices across their locations nationwide, with diesel priced as low as N1,050 per litre and aviation fuel at N980 per litre at major airports where MRS operates.

Underage Students Causing Problems In Universities – Minister Of Education

The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, revealed on Monday that the Federal Government is contemplating setting 18 years as the minimum age requirement for admission into universities and other tertiary institutions. Mamman pointed out that some of the issues faced in higher institutions are attributed to underage students. He made these remarks while overseeing the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination in Abuja.

Mamman cautioned parents against pressuring their children to advance academically too soon, emphasizing the importance of allowing them to mature adequately before entering university. He expressed concerns about students as young as 15 or 16 sitting for university entrance exams, stating that such early admission could hinder their ability to manage university life effectively.

Commending the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for conducting a smooth examination, Mamman highlighted the role of technology in curbing examination malpractice. He noted a significant decrease in malpractice cases, attributing it to the efficient use of technology.

Addressing the challenge of limited admission slots in tertiary institutions, Mamman stressed the importance of skill acquisition in preparing youths for the future. He advocated for integrating skill development into the educational system from primary school onward, ensuring that students acquire practical skills even if they do not pursue higher education.

Dr. Tanko Sununu, the Minister of State for Education, echoed Mamman's sentiments, praising the objectivity and reliability of JAMB's examination process. He emphasized the meticulous procedures in place to prevent malpractice and ensure a fair examination environment.

Overall, both ministers emphasized the need for a holistic approach to education, balancing academic excellence with practical skills development to empower the younger generation for meaningful participation in society.

Nigerian Government Prepares to Restructure 11 Distribution Companies (DisCos)

The Nigerian government has initiated the process of restructuring the eleven electricity distribution companies (DisCos) across the nation. This development was announced by Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, during a meeting with the Senate Committee on Power held at the Ministry of Power and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) in Abuja on Monday.

As part of the restructuring, DisCos that have been taken over by banks and the Assets Management Corporation (AMCON) are slated for sale. Currently, five distribution companies are under bank and AMCON management due to their failure to repay loans. Specifically, the Abuja DisCo is managed by the United Bank of Africa (UBA), while Fidelity Bank oversees the Benin, Kaduna, and Kano DisCos. The Ibadan DisCo falls under AMCON's management.

The federal government privatized 11 electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) and six generating companies (GENCOs) in November 2013, while retaining full ownership of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

Minister Adelabu explained to the Senate Committee on Power that the restructuring aims to improve efficiency and effectiveness by dividing DisCos along state lines. He emphasized that some DisCos are too large to operate efficiently, citing the example of the Ibadan DisCo covering seven states. Adelabu also stressed the need for both federal and state governments to play active roles in the operation and management of DisCos, considering that the government still owns 40% of these firms.

Additionally, plans are in place to franchise unserved communities under the DisCos. Adelabu expressed determination to enforce regulations and revoke licenses for underperformance, urging the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to take necessary actions against non-performing DisCos.

Furthermore, Adelabu emphasized the urgency of selling DisCos currently under AMCON and bank management to technically proficient operators within the next three months. He asserted that the technical nature of the industry requires expertise in utility management, highlighting the need to disengage AMCON and banks from running DisCos.
