NLC President Ajaero Maintains Proposed 615,000 Minimum Wage Is Realistic

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) remains firm on its stance that the proposed N615,000 minimum wage is reasonable, rejecting assertions that certain states would struggle to afford such a figure if implemented. Recent policy changes in Nigeria, such as the removal of fuel subsidies and the consolidation of the foreign exchange market, have heightened the cost of living, with inflation soaring to 33.2 percent in March, exacerbating economic challenges.

Negotiations between labor unions and the Federal Government have been ongoing to address these economic difficulties, with discussions revolving around measures like a new minimum wage to alleviate the impact of the harsh economic conditions. The NLC is advocating for a monthly salary of N615,000 for workers, a significant increase from the current N30,000. While some view this proposal as unrealistic, the labor union believes that many states could manage to pay for it if they allocated their resources appropriately.

NLC President Joe Ajaero emphasized the importance of states prioritizing their spending. He noted that some states previously deemed incapable of paying higher wages still failed to meet their obligations even when funds were provided by the federal government. Ajaero suggested that states should focus on initiatives like mechanized agriculture to achieve self-sufficiency in food production, which could alleviate economic pressures.

Regarding the Federal Government's recent announcement of a pay increase for certain workers on the eve of Labor Day, Ajaero criticized the move, labeling it as "mischievous." He clarified that there was no actual wage increment being announced by the government, dismissing the announcement as misleading.

Shettima: Interventions by CBN and NSA in FX Market Produce Desired Outcomes

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has affirmed that the interventions made by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the National Security Adviser (NSA) in the foreign exchange (FX) market have resulted in the desired outcomes. Shettima made these remarks on Thursday during the 2nd Chronicle Roundtable event in Abuja, organized by 21st Century Media Services, publishers of the 21st Century Chronicles, as part of its public service enlightenment series.

On February 24, the CBN and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) forged a partnership aimed at investigating and penalizing those engaged in illicit activities within the foreign exchange (FX) market. This decision was prompted by the persistent depreciation of the naira and its adverse effects on inflation and economic stability.

Speaking at the event, Vice-President Shettima highlighted the long-standing economic sabotage faced by Nigeria, which prompted Governor Yemi Cardoso of the CBN and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu to take decisive action against individuals plotting to undermine the country's reforms. He stated that these interventions have yielded positive results.

Shettima urged Nigerians to exercise patience with the administration of President Bola Tinubu as it navigates through the economic challenges encountered upon assuming office. He expressed optimism about the administration's various initiatives in sectors such as oil and gas, creative arts, steel and solid minerals, housing, blue economy, and digital sectors, anticipating significant economic growth soon.

In his opening remarks, Shamsudeen Usman, Chairman of the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI), commended the content of the government's renewed hope agenda, considering it one of the most detailed and carefully crafted policy documents in the country's history. Usman stressed the importance of integrating the document into the country's medium and long-term development framework for policy consistency and the transformation of critical sectors.

Usman also praised the establishment of a central coordination delivery unit by the administration to monitor the performance of government programs, policies, and key interventions. He emphasized the critical role of monitoring key performance indicators in ensuring the success of government initiatives.

Mahmud Jega, CEO of 2nd Chronicle Newspaper, emphasized the importance of critically analyzing government policies and programs not only as an expectation from the media but also as a collective contribution to shaping the nation's development trajectory.

World Press Freedom Day 2024

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has reiterated the significance of media freedom, freedom of expression, and access to public information in upholding democracy, stressing that these values should form the core of the Nigerian government's principles and actions.

In a press release issued on Thursday to commemorate this year's World Press Freedom Day, signed by its President, Mr. Eze Anaba, and General Secretary, Dr. Iyobosa Uwugiaren, the professional body of editors and media executives in Nigeria emphasized the pivotal role played by journalists, media personnel, and independent media in safeguarding the nation's democracy. Despite the prevailing economic challenges, the guild advised them not to relent in their efforts.

The NGE urged the National Assembly to introduce and enact legislation to safeguard journalists who speak out on matters of public interest, particularly against abusive and strategic lawsuits commonly initiated to suppress them.

This year's World Press Freedom Day, dedicated to highlighting the importance of quality journalism amid the ongoing global environmental crisis, underscores the fundamental principles of press freedom, as established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993. It serves to evaluate the state of press freedom worldwide, defend media independence against attacks, and honor journalists who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.

Furthermore, the NGE stressed the significance of press freedom in promoting transparency, accountability, and democracy, as enshrined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It emphasized the role of journalism and freedom of expression in raising awareness about environmental issues, holding power accountable, amplifying marginalized voices, fostering public engagement, and providing platforms for solutions.

The Guild urged all stakeholders in the media community to advocate for press freedom and address the challenges faced by journalists, including censorship, harassment, imprisonment, and violence. It called on the government to take deliberate and sustained action to promote press freedom and quality journalism, including adopting laws to protect whistleblowers and repealing obnoxious laws targeting journalists and media organizations.

In conclusion, the NGE celebrated the courage and dedication of journalists across the country, acknowledging the growing threats to press freedom. It pledged to continue advocating for press freedom, freedom of expression, and access to information, emphasizing their crucial role in promoting good governance, democratic societies, and fundamental human rights.
