Biafra Day: Abia Government Will Not Confront Sit-at-Home Organizers – Otti

Gov. Alex Otti of Abia State has stated that his administration is not interested in unnecessary confrontation with those promoting the May 30 sit-at-home to honor those killed during the Nigerian civil war.

In an interview in Umuahia, the Governor emphasized that people have the right to mourn their deceased. Speaking through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, he assured that the government is coordinating with schools to ensure that students taking the West African Examination Council (WAEC) exams are not negatively impacted.

He explained that the government is working with all parties to protect the academic interests of the WAEC candidates, stating, "We are in touch with all the schools affected to see what could be done so that WAEC exams are not disrupted. We are engaging with schools on how to manage the situation."

He further added, "We do not seek unnecessary confrontation with those advocating for a sit-at-home in honor of their dead. They have every right to mourn, especially given the historical context of the war. This is not a matter to politicize. It was a deeply emotional period marked by genocidal events. We are not interested in confronting those who want to observe this moment of honor for the victims of the war.

"We are handling this with wisdom and diplomacy, engaging with all involved parties and implementing measures that the government may not wish to disclose publicly. Our primary concern is to ensure that students can take their exams. Rest assured, we are putting measures in place to maintain peace in Abia State."

President Bola Tinubu has approved an extension of free train rides on the Abuja Rail Mass Transit, also known as the Metro Rail, for an additional six months, continuing until the end of the year.

The President made this announcement during his speech at the inauguration of Abuja Metro Rail's commencement of operations on Wednesday. Initially, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike had announced two months of free train rides to alleviate commuting challenges for residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

However, President Tinubu urged for an extension of the free rides, aiming to provide hope and joy to the people of the FCT. "Our dear landlord and his team, I heard you say two months of free rides. I would like to ask you to extend it until the end of the year. Since today you’re not going to charge me, that will give the people hope and reasons to celebrate,” Tinubu stated.

Sanwo-Olu Set To Commission 15 New Ferries At Badore

The stage is set for Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to inaugurate 15 new water buses, enhancing the state's water transportation system.

The new ferry, Omibus, will be commissioned at the Badore Jetty in Ajah. Constructed by Caverton Marine, a subsidiary of Caverton Helicopters, a prominent Indigenous player in Nigeria's aviation sector, each ferry has a capacity of 40 passengers, promising to bolster water travel in the state.

According to Osiyemi, this initiative will alleviate road congestion by reducing travel time to between 20 and 30 minutes. Additionally, it has generated over 1,000 job opportunities, particularly for youths in coastal communities, through programs like waste-to-wealth, and has opened up more economic empowerment avenues for women.

Lagos State operates seven terminals/jetties: Ikorodu-Five Cowries/Marina, Ijede-Badore West, East, Baiyeku-Ajah/Lagbasa, and Mile 2-Marina/Five Cowries. Others include Badore-Five Cowries/Marina, Ilaje Bariga-Five Cowries/Marina, and EbiteOjo-Mile 2-Marina.
