NDLEA Detains Prospective Pilgrims Found With Cocaine Packages In Lagos

NDLEA operatives have apprehended four individuals who were planning to ingest cocaine before their flight on Wednesday, intending to embark on a pilgrimage. According to Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA's Director of Media and Advocacy, the arrest occurred following a raid at the Emerald Hotel in the Ladipo area of Oshodi, Lagos State, where some suspects stayed.

The arrested individuals are Usman Kamorudeen (31), Olasunkanmi Owolabi (46), Fatai Yekini (38), and Ayinla Kemi (34). They were found in possession of 200 pellets of cocaine, weighing 2.20 kilograms, which they had prepared to swallow when the NDLEA officers raided their rooms. Each room contained 100 wraps of the Class A substance.

Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brig Gen. Mohamed Marwa (Retd), commended the Lagos State Command of the NDLEA for their efforts in conducting the operation. He emphasized the agency's commitment to tracking down and apprehending criminal elements who attempt to exploit pilgrimages for their illegal activities, which could tarnish the country's reputation.

Marwa also highlighted the agency's collaboration with counterparts in Saudi Arabia to ensure that individuals designated to receive seized illicit drug consignments in Saudi Arabia are identified and dealt with accordingly.

Anthony Joshua Positioned for Undisputed Title Shot Against Winner Fury And Usyk

Promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed that Anthony Joshua is on track to challenge for the undisputed heavyweight championship by facing the winner of the Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk rematch.

In an interview with The Sun, Hearn stated, “I expect the winner of the December fight to fight Anthony Joshua if he wins in September. There’s no decision yet made on the opponent, there are three or four in the mix.

But yeah, that’s the absolute plan.” Joshua's next bout is anticipated to be against Daniel Dubois in September at Wembley Stadium. Dubois recently secured the IBF ‘interim’ belt by defeating Filip Hrgovic. “The priority is to regain the world heavyweight title and obviously undisputed always been the dream. So, I think we’re two fights away from becoming undisputed. But we’ve got to win them,” Hearn added.

In their initial encounter last month, Usyk clinched victory over Fury via split decision, becoming the first boxer since Lennox Lewis in 1999 to unify the heavyweight division. Usyk's triumph led him to claim the WBC title from Fury, in addition to his WBA (Super), WBO, IBF, and IBO belts. Promoter Frank Warren confirmed ongoing discussions for a potential Joshua-Dubois clash, stating, “Daniel Dubois proved all his doubters wrong and won the IBF ‘interim’ belt. He hopefully will be fighting AJ in the autumn; we’re working on that. He did well.

We would love it to be in the UK, they’re two Brits, and it would be a great fight to put on at Wembley.” Should Joshua emerge victorious against Dubois, he will be in contention to face either Fury or Usyk in pursuit of becoming the undisputed heavyweight champion, regardless of the outcome of the Fury-Usyk rematch.Top of Form

Aba Killing: House of Representatives Initiates Investigation

The House of Representatives has directed security agencies to thoroughly investigate the murder of soldiers by gunmen in Aba, Abia State. This decision follows a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Abubakar Yalleman. The House has tasked its Committee on Defense with coordinating with the Armed Forces to ensure a comprehensive investigation and apprehend those responsible. The committee is expected to report back within four weeks.

Yalleman condemned the brutal murder of military personnel on peace missions, highlighting that such attacks have become increasingly common nationwide. He pointed out that these attacks often occur through surprise assaults on military formations, including checkpoints and routine patrols. The soldiers were serving their country, ensuring the security of lives and property in the area.

He also warned that these attacks could demoralize the Armed Forces, endanger civilians, and undermine efforts to combat insecurity. Retaliatory actions by the military could lead to significant collateral damage.

Chairman of the House Committee on Defense, Babajimi Benson, described the attacks on military and security formations as provocative and commended President Bola Tinubu for demanding justice. Chairman of the House Committee on Navy, Yusuf Gagdi, expressed concern that while measures to end insecurity are being advocated, those risking their lives for the country are being targeted by non-state actors.

The military attributed the attack on its troops to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, stated that the attack occurred at Obikabia Junction Checkpoint in Obingwa Local Government Area near Aba. The troops of Operation Udoka were deployed to enforce peace and protect citizens when they were ambushed by terrorists in three tinted Toyota Prado SUVs. Six civilians were also killed in the crossfire.

Presidency Insist Subsidy Removal, Labels Leaked Documents Unofficial

The Presidency has urged the public and media to disregard two fiscal policy documents circulating on social media, labeling them as unofficial and subject to review. The documents, titled “Inflation Reduction and Price Stability (Fiscal Policy Measure etc) Order 2024” and “Accelerated Stabilisation and Advancement Plan (ASAP),” reportedly contain proposals on economic policy, including customs tariffs and fuel subsidies.

In a statement on Thursday, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, clarified that the documents have not been approved or finalized. He emphasized that policymaking is a process involving multiple drafts and discussions.

Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, assured the public that the official position on the documents will be disclosed after comprehensive reviews and approvals. Edun stated, “It is important to understand that policymaking is an iterative process involving multiple drafts and discussions before any document is finalized. We assure the public that the official position on the documents will be made available after comprehensive reviews and approvals are completed.”

The documents have led to speculation about government policies on customs tariffs, fuel subsidies, and other economic matters. Edun reiterated that the government’s stance on fuel subsidies remains unchanged from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's declaration on May 29, 2023. “The fuel subsidy regime has ended. There is no N5.4 trillion being provisioned for it in 2024, as widely speculated,” Edun affirmed.

Edun further clarified, “President Tinubu announced the end of the fuel subsidy program last year, and this policy remains firmly in place. The Federal Government is committed to mitigating the effects of this removal and easing the cost of living pressures on Nigerians. Our strategy focuses on addressing key factors such as food inflation, which is significantly impacted by transport costs. With the implementation of our CNG initiative, which aims to reduce high PMS and AGO costs, we expect to further lower these costs. Our commitment to ending unproductive subsidies is steadfast, as is our dedication to supporting our most vulnerable populations.”

The Presidency urged the media to exercise restraint and verify documents through official channels to ensure accurate information and avoid misleading the public.Top of Form
