Jonathan Advises Tinubu to Establish a Frictionless Democracy

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged President Bola Tinubu to foster a democracy where citizens can freely express themselves without conflict. Speaking at a symposium commemorating 25 years of uninterrupted democracy in Nigeria, held at the Banquet Hall of the State House in Abuja, Jonathan emphasized the importance of inclusive governance.

"Together, let us build a Nigeria where every citizen has a voice, where opportunities abound, and where the promise of a better tomorrow is not just a dream," Jonathan stated. "We must not hand over to our children a democracy built on the politics of a region or religion."

He suggested that the National Assembly should explore models that address the underlying causes of the country's "do or die" political culture, which he described as detrimental to democratic consolidation.

Jonathan also highlighted Tinubu's responsibility to ensure that the next 25 years of democracy begin on a positive note. "For the honorable Vice President, we hope you will build more infrastructure, improve the quality of education, and enhance facilities. One key aspect is building a democracy that reduces friction," he added, referencing the disruptive nature of the numerous litigations that follow each election cycle.

He called on the political class and elites to lead by example, emphasizing that their lifestyle should reflect their role as elected representatives of the people. He pointed out that a democracy where political officeholders' children are seen flaunting wealth is not the democracy Nigerians aspire to witness.

Jonathan criticized the winner-takes-all approach in Nigerian politics, noting that it promotes discord. He advocated for a more inclusive political model that reinforced social cohesion. "If a political party, for example, gets 30% of votes during an election, either at the national or sub-national level, the party should have something to go home with," he said.

The event, which Jonathan chaired, was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, and other notable guests. Jonathan concluded by stressing the need for a model of democratic practice that is inclusive and fosters political justice.

CBN Assures Safety of Depositors’ Funds, Denies Plans to Liquidate Additional Banks

In response to concerns raised about the stability of certain Nigerian banks following the recent revocation of Heritage Bank Plc’s license, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has once again assured the banking public of the safety of their deposits and the resilience of the banking system.

Contrary to speculations, Hakama Sidi Ali, the bank’s acting director of the corporate communications department, dismissed claims on Monday that the CBN was contemplating revoking the operating licenses of Fidelity, Polaris, Wema, and Unity Banks. She clarified that a circular issued on January 10, 2024, announcing the dissolution of the Boards of Union, Keystone, and Polaris Banks, was misconstrued as if it were issued on June 10, 2024.

Addressing reporters, Sidi Ali stressed that the situation with Heritage Bank was an isolated case, and allegations of further license revocations before completing the bank recapitalization process were unfounded rumors aimed at causing panic within the system. She assured customers, especially those of Heritage Bank, that their deposits were secure, noting that the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) had begun compensating the bank's insured depositors.

Sidi Ali encouraged the public to continue their usual banking activities without worry, dismissing any false reports about the financial health of specific deposit money banks. She affirmed that the CBN, through its robust regulatory framework, was proactively ensuring the stability of Nigeria’s financial system and safeguarding depositors’ funds in all Nigerian financial institutions.

Reiterating Governor Olayemi Cardoso's assurances, she emphasized that the recapitalization of banks in Nigeria aimed to strengthen the banking system and protect it against risks. Sidi Ali urged all stakeholders to collaborate in ensuring the success of the recapitalization process, which she emphasized would contribute to the overall growth of the Nigerian economy. She concluded by reaffirming the CBN's commitment to maintaining the safety of the banking system and encouraging customers to proceed with their transactions as usual.

Wreckage of Missing Malawi VP’s Plane Found, No Survivors – Military Reports

Malawian search teams have discovered the wreckage of a plane that was carrying Vice President Saulos Chilima, a military source reported Tuesday, a day after the aircraft went missing in bad weather. The military plane, which had Chilima, 51, and nine others on board, disappeared on Monday after failing to land in Mzuzu due to poor visibility. It was instructed to return to Lilongwe but crashed, with no survivors in the wreckage.

Photographs shared by a military rescue team member with the AFP showed army personnel standing on a foggy slope near debris identified as the Malawi Army Air Wing Dornier 228-202K aircraft. President Lazarus Chakwera is expected to address the nation soon.

Rescuers had been searching a foggy forest south of Mzuzu on Tuesday after authorities pinpointed the last transmission tower the plane contacted before disappearing. General Paul Valentino Phiri, the army commander, mentioned that neighboring countries had assisted in the search, providing helicopters and drones.

The group departed from Lilongwe just after 9:00 am (0700 GMT) on Monday to attend the funeral of a former cabinet minister in Mzuzu, approximately 370 kilometers (230 miles) away. Malawi’s former first lady, Shanil Dzimbiri was also on board.

Chilima, first elected vice president in 2014, is a charismatic figure, especially popular among young people in Malawi. However, in 2022, during his second term, he was stripped of his powers after being arrested and charged with corruption in a bribery scandal involving a British-Malawian businessman. Last month, a Malawian court dropped the charges, allowing him to resume his official duties.

Terrorists Kidnap Travelers Along Maiduguri-Kano Highway

Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have abducted numerous travelers along the Maiduguri-Kano highway. According to the Daily Trust, the insurgents carried out the abductions on Monday evening between Garin Kuturu and Mannanari village near Auno along the Damaturu highway. The insurgents reportedly blocked the highway, forcefully abducting several passengers, while other commuters had to retreat to Benishek and Auno.

“There was an incident between Mannanari and Garin Kuturu where some Boko Haram fighters came out to block the upcoming vehicles, and some passengers were abducted. We are not sure of the number as we speak, but certainly, there was an abduction on Monday evening,” a source told the newspaper.

Residents recounted that commercial drivers sought refuge in their community during the attack. "They came out with three wheelbarrows, likely looking for foodstuffs. We don’t know how many people were abducted, but some commercial drivers returned to Maiduguri before military reinforcements arrived.”

A passenger, speaking anonymously, said he and others were stranded on the highway for hours. “We were heading for Kano from Maiduguri when the driver got wind of the attack and took a detour. We have been waiting for the military to clear the road, but we don’t know when. We are stranded here.”
