Nnamdi Kanu Seeks Negotiation With Federal Government Over Trial

Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has informed the Federal High Court in Abuja of his intention to seek negotiations with the Federal Government under Section 17 of the Federal High Court Act. Kanu, who has been in DSS custody since his June 2021 arrest in Kenya, faces terrorism-related charges.

Section 17 of the Federal High Court Act allows the court to promote reconciliation and facilitate amicable settlements in any proceeding. Kanu's lead counsel, Alloy Ejimakor, announced this intention in open court on Wednesday after presenting two applications: one to move Form 49 and another challenging the court's jurisdiction. Ejimakor stated that if these applications were denied, they would invoke Section 17 of the Act.

In response, the Federal Government's counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo, clarified that he lacks the authority to negotiate on behalf of the government and suggested Kanu approach the Attorney General. Justice Binta Nyako emphasized that the court's role is to hear cases, not act as a solicitor.

During his court appearance, Kanu also addressed recent killings in the South-East, condemning the violence and denying any involvement in the recent murder of soldiers in Abia State. He reiterated IPOB's commitment to non-violence, stating that the organization was founded on peaceful principles and that they seek freedom, not violence. Kanu expressed his condolences to the families affected by the violence and emphasized the importance of focusing on the continent's future.

"We condemn all killings because IPOB stands for non-violence. We are fighting for freedom, not violence," Kanu told journalists in court. "We have endured much suffering in Africa, from slavery to colonization, and now we must focus on becoming what God intended for us to be."

Rivers Crisis: Okocha Urges Tinubu to Declare State of Emergency

Amidst the ongoing crisis in Rivers State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has renewed its call for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a state of emergency. The party emphasized the need for this measure to address the escalating disorder.

During a press conference in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, Chief Tony Okocha, the caretaker chairman (CTC) of the party, urged the deployment of armed soldiers to key locations across the state to prevent a breakdown of law and order. Okocha highlighted clear signs of lawlessness driven by non-state actors, warning that failure to act promptly could lead to uncontrollable chaos.

Additionally, Okocha clarified that the controversial Law No. 2 of 2024 was not intended to extend the tenure of the outgoing chairmen but was meant for future considerations.

Recruitment Controversy: PSC Urges Tinubu to Dismiss IGP

The Police Service Commission (PSC) on Wednesday urged President Bola Tinubu to immediately dismiss the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, for undermining the police recruitment process.

The PSC also addressed allegations of corruption against itself. During a press briefing in Abuja, Adoyi Adoyi, Chairman of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) and the Joint Union Congress of the Police Service Commission (PSC), expressed displeasure over what he called false allegations against the PSC.

Over the weekend, the IGP, through a statement by Force Public Relations Officer ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, claimed that the recruitment process was tainted with irregularities and corruption. Adoyi countered this, revealing reliable information that elements within the police force attempted to unlawfully add over 1,000 names to the recruitment list.

Court Dismisses Lawsuit by Fleeing Anjarwalla Against NSA and EFCC

On Wednesday, a Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by Nadeem Anjarwalla, a fleeing executive of Binance Holdings Ltd, against the National Security Adviser (NSA) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Justice Inyang Ekwo dismissed the suit due to a lack of diligent prosecution.

When the case was called, neither Anjarwalla nor his lawyer were present. Justice Ekwo noted that on March 28, Tonye Krukrubo, SAN, who represented Anjarwalla, had sought and was granted permission to withdraw from the case. The matter was then adjourned to today, but no lawyer appeared for Anjarwalla.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that Anjarwalla, Binance's Africa regional manager, had filed a separate suit along with his colleague, Tigran Gambaryan, against the NSA and EFCC, seeking their release from detention. However, Anjarwalla escaped custody on March 22 and fled to Kenya.

Anjarwalla and Gambaryan’s suits, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/355/24 and FHC/ABJ/CS/356/24 respectively, were filed before Justice Ekwo. They sued the Office of NSA (ONSA) and EFCC as respondents, seeking the same reliefs. They argued that their detention and the seizure of their passports violated their fundamental right to personal liberty as guaranteed by Section 35 (1) and (4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Justice Ekwo scheduled July 9 for the hearing of Gambaryan’s suit. This date was set after Gambaryan’s lawyer, Krukrubo, moved a motion to amend their originating process. Although EFCC’s lawyer, Olarewanju Adeola, opposed the motion, the judge granted the amendment, stating that parties are entitled to amend their processes before judgment.

However, Gambaryan was fined N50,000 in favor of the EFCC for joining issues in the matter. Justice Ekwo ordered that the fine must be paid before the next hearing, scheduled for July 9, where the preliminary objection and the substantive matter will be heard.
