FG Bans Single-Use Plastics in Ministries and Other Sectors

The Federal Government announced on Tuesday a ban on single-use plastics in ministries, departments, and agencies. The Minister of State for Environment, Iziaq Salako, made this declaration while addressing reporters at the Presidential Villa following the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.

Salako referred to the National Policy on Plastic Waste Management, adopted in 2020, which anticipates banning certain categories of plastics by January 2025. "These include single-use items like plastic spoons, straws, PET bottles, and water sachets. The Federal Government is leading by example and preparing Nigerians for this transition," he said.

The minister emphasized that the ban is part of the government's commitment to addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, and plastic pollution, which pose significant challenges in Nigeria. He noted that plastic waste often clogs drains, contributing to flooding, pollutes oceans, and adversely affects human health and the environment.

Earlier this year, the Lagos State Government also banned single-use plastics and Styrofoam within the state.

Dangote Refinery Controls Fire at Treatment Plant, No Injuries Reported

A "minor fire" incident occurred at the effluent treatment plant of the Dangote Refinery in Lagos on Wednesday. The fire was quickly extinguished as firefighters and first responders promptly responded to the situation. Videos circulating online showed thick plumes of smoke rising from the facility located in the Lekki Free Zone near Lagos.

In a statement, company spokesperson Anthony Chiejina assured that operations at the refinery were unaffected. "There is no cause for alarm as the refinery is operating normally, and there have been no injuries or harm to our staff on duty," he said.

The $20 billion facility, owned by billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote, began operations last December with a capacity of 350,000 barrels per day. The refinery aims to reach its full capacity of 650,000 barrels per day by the end of the year. It has already started supplying diesel and aviation fuel to marketers in the country, with petrol supply expected to commence by mid-July.

Abia Government Announces Plan to Settle Workers’ Salary Arrears

The Abia State Government has announced plans to pay salary arrears owed to workers in state-owned higher institutions in installments. Commissioner for Finance Mike Akpara revealed this on Tuesday during a press conference in Umuahia, the state capital.

Mr. Akpara emphasized the current administration's commitment to ending the cycle of unpaid wages, stating, "A worker deserves his wages." He disclosed that the administration inherited N16.5 billion in salary arrears owed to employees in state-owned educational institutions.

The government has resolved to clear these arrears while maintaining progress in other sectors of the economy. Mr. Akpara noted, "We need to jump-start the state's economy, and for money circulation to improve in Abia, we need to stop going to bed by 7 p.m. The governor has set machinery in motion to ensure that salary arrears become a thing of the past."

He explained that the arrears would be paid in installments to avoid disrupting progress in other sectors. The payment process is expected to begin by July or August and be completed by the end of the year.

The salary arrears, totaling N16.5 billion, affect various state-owned institutions, including Abia State University (ABSU), the College of Education in Arochukwu, the College of Health Sciences, the Abia State Polytechnic in Aba, and the Abia State University Teaching Hospital.

Mr. Akpara stated that the government had already paid April and May salary arrears for ABSU workers. He criticized the previous practice of subventions being given without ensuring salaries were paid, leading to substantial arrears in many institutions.

He detailed the arrears owed to specific institutions: "The past government owed Abia Polytechnic 33 months, the College of Education Arochukwu 22 months, and Abia State University 11 months. The Hospital Management Board was owed several months, leading to strikes. We also have ASUBEB and SEMB, with total arrears exceeding N4 billion."

The government is committed to addressing these arrears while continuing to foster development across other sectors of the economy.
