Police Officer Fatally Shoots Betting Agent in Ogun

The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a middle-aged man, a graduate of the state-owned Moshood Abiola Polytechnic and a betting agent, in the Imala area of Abeokuta, the state capital, by a policeman.

The police spokesperson in the state, Omolola Odutola, stated that all those involved have been invited as part of the investigation. The victim, Anuoluwapo, operated a Bet9ja shop in front of a popular hotel in the area and was closing for the day when he was gunned down.

Witnesses allege that the officers who emerged from the hotel were drunk, and one of them fired the fatal shot. Another eyewitness reported that the officers were on a raid or chasing a suspect when one of them accidentally killed Anuoluwapo, popularly called Pepe. The officers immediately fled into the hotel and called for reinforcement to facilitate their escape from the scene. Eyewitnesses further revealed that the officers and the backup fired shots sporadically to clear their path.

Reacting to the development, the police spokesperson said that the police commissioner in the state, Abiodun Alamutu, has contacted all stakeholders to initiate an investigation.

“We have the information that one Aanu was a victim. It is not easy to say exactly what happened but the Commissioner of Police is in touch with the stakeholders. He has called everybody involved so that we can start investigating,” Odutola said.

Lagos Police Save Pregnant Teenager from Suicide Attempt

A 19-year-old pregnant girl, on the brink of suicide, was rescued by police officers from the Ikorodu Area Command in Lagos. The girl, who worked as a Point of Sale (POS) operator, was reportedly distressed because her employer threatened to arrest her after she was scammed out of N100,000 by a customer.

When the Ikorodu Area Commander, Mr. Musendique Orobiyi, learned about the girl's suicidal intentions, he immediately dispatched a team of female detectives to find and save her. The detectives located her in Iyana-Iyesi, Ogun State, just as she was about to consume a bottle of sniper pesticide. They rescued her and brought her back to the Ikorodu Area Command, where they provided her with food, clothing, and support before transferring her to the gender unit at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters in Ikeja.

Speaking with Vanguard, the girl (whose name has been withheld) shared her struggles, explaining that her problems began after her boyfriend denied responsibility for her pregnancy and disappeared. Compounding her difficulties, she was defrauded of N100,000 at her POS job through a fake bank alert.

She lamented that she had no support system, had never attended antenatal care, and was unaware of her baby’s gender due to a lack of funds. Her parents are divorced, and she has no contact with them.

Expressing gratitude, she said, "I didn’t know the police could help like this. They took me to Ikorodu, fed me, and provided clothes. The Area Commander was amazing, ensuring I was well cared for. Initially, I thought my employer wanted to arrest me, but I found sympathy and help from the police, which changed my mind about ending my life."

Benjamin Hundey, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, confirmed the incident.

FG Aims to Empower 5,000 NYSC Members with N50bn Fund

The Federal Government plans to invest N50 billion to empower at least 5,000 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, equating to about N10 million each, according to Youth Development Minister Dr. Jemila Ibrahim. She announced this in Paiko, Niger State, this week.

Additionally, a National Youth Skills Programme (NYSP) is set to launch soon, aiming to train one million young Nigerians in various fields, including technology and agriculture. During the 2024 Batch B, Stream 1 orientation course swearing-in ceremony in Paiko, Ibrahim also mentioned that applications for the ‘restructured’ Nigerian Youth Investment Fund (NYIF) are now open, allowing young people to access financial support.

Ibrahim encouraged youths nationwide to utilize the NYIF to bring their business ideas to life and to embrace the NYSP for gaining new competencies and developing well-rounded skills.

Niger State Governor, Alhaji Mohammed Bago, announced plans to construct a new NYSC permanent orientation camp, replacing the current temporary structures. “We want to build a brand new NYSC camp; so today we are putting N5 billion for a new NYSC camp and sink five boreholes and toilets in the temporary camp,” Bago stated.

To boost the morale of the corps members, the governor announced a N200,000 bonus for each corps member in the 2024 Batch B, Stream 1, along with 20 cows and a truck of rice to ensure their comfort. He urged corps members to participate in the state's agricultural revolution program to address the food crisis, highlighting his administration’s significant investments in agriculture.

NYSC Director-General Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed thanked the governor for approving the N5 billion for the new NYSC camp construction and praised the N200,000 bonus for corps members. He encouraged other governors to follow this example to support and motivate corps members.
