PDP Governors Declare Support for Governor Fubara Amid Political Tension in Rivers State

The People's Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum has reaffirmed its support for Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, pledging to resolve the political crisis in the state and ensure peaceful governance.

In a statement issued by Nelson Chukwudi, Chief Press Secretary to the Rivers State governor, the forum announced its commitment to supporting Governor Fubara and discouraging any efforts to destabilize his administration. The statement was part of a communique released after a meeting held at the Government House in Enugu.

The governors urged those instigating conflict to desist and allow Governor Fubara to deliver effective governance to the people of Rivers State. They also discussed other pressing issues, including upcoming party congresses, the Edo and Ondo governorship elections, implications of the Supreme Court judgment on local government autonomy, protracted national minimum wage negotiations, and the state of the economy.

Bauchi State Governor and Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Senator Bala Mohammed, read the communique, stating, “The Forum notes the crises in the Rivers State Chapter of the party and commits to ensuring peace. The Forum has resolved to stand by His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, Governor of Rivers State, while at the same time employing wider consultations with stakeholders for a peaceful resolution and thus finding a lasting solution to the crises.”

The governors criticized the All-Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government for its lackluster approach to addressing growing inflation, worsening corruption, and the declining standard of living. They called for more pragmatic policies and programs to rescue the economy and provide relief to Nigerians.

On the national minimum wage negotiations, Governor Mohammed stated, “The minimum wage negotiations are becoming unduly protracted. In the face of the unprecedented hardship and impoverishment of the majority of our people, the Forum resolves that labor’s demand for a substantial salary raise is eminently justified and therefore commands the total support of the Forum.”

Regarding the upcoming party congresses, he emphasized the need for inclusivity, transparency, and fairness in compliance with the party's constitution. He also reiterated the forum's support for local government autonomy as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.

Attendees at the meeting included Governor Bala Mohammed (Bauchi) as chairman; Governor Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers) as vice chairman; Governor Peter Mbah as host; Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri (Adamawa); Governor Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom); Governor Douye Diri (Bayelsa); Governor Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta); Governor Godwin Obaseki (Edo); Governor Seyi Makinde (Oyo); Governor Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau); Governor Agbu Kefas (Taraba); and Governor Dauda Lawal (Zamfara).

Federal Government To Introduce New Curriculum For Secondary School

The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, announced on Thursday that a new curriculum for secondary schools nationwide would be introduced by September 2024. Mamman made this statement at the ongoing 2024 Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board policy meeting in Abuja.

“We are working hard to ensure that a new curriculum is introduced for secondary schools by September,” Mamman said, highlighting that the process has been ongoing for the past year. A stakeholders meeting is scheduled for August 6, 2024, to finalize the plans.

“We plan that by September, this program will be implemented in all schools, public and private,” the minister added.

Recently, the National Senior Secondary School Education Commission expressed concern over the poor state of senior secondary schools in the country and called for collaboration to address various challenges in the education sector. The commission cited issues such as infrastructural deficits, unqualified teachers, outdated curricula, and inadequate libraries and laboratories.

The introduction of the new curriculum is part of the efforts to address these challenges and improve the quality of secondary education in Nigeria.

July 18, 2024 NELFUND Boss: Students to Receive Payments Next Week for New Academic Session

NELFUND Boss: Students to Receive Payments Next Week for New Academic Session

Students of tertiary institutions who have successfully applied for the Federal Government’s loan scheme and are beginning new academic sessions will start receiving credit alerts from next week, according to NELFUND Managing Director Akintunde Sawyerr.

Speaking on a monitored programme on Wednesday, Sawyerr stated, “The people who are going to first receive alerts as early as next week are the people who are about to start a new session in the institution, they are in.”

Sawyerr revealed that out of 170,000 applicants from universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education, 110,000 have completed the application process and have accounts with NELFUND.

He explained that there are two types of beneficiaries: the institutions, which will receive payments on behalf of those who have successfully applied, and the students, who will receive a monthly stipend.

“A formal launch of the disbursement circle played out at the State House on Wednesday,” he said, emphasizing that the program aims to provide Nigeria with better leadership in the future and improve the socio-economic situation of the country.

“To be precise, about 110,000 students have successfully applied. They’ve submitted their applications and been verified as bona fide and eligible applicants. But we’ll still carry out further verification to make sure they are well-qualified to receive these loans. But over 110,000 are likely to begin to receive disbursement from next week,” he added.

“It’s one thing to get approval for the loan; it’s another thing to begin to receive value. This loan is for those who are going to be starting institutions afresh or those who are already there.”

Sawyerr noted that applicants must have Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) numbers, matriculation numbers, Bank Verification Numbers (BVN), and National Identification Numbers (NIN), among other requirements.

“Current exposure to students is about N35bn. We’ve got much more than that sitting in our accounts that we can disburse, and we’ve also got some funding on the way. Remember, we are getting 1% of Federal Inland Revenue Service taxes, and we also can receive funding from other sources,” he explained.

Lagos Government Issues Flood Alert Amidst Global Warming Concerns

The Lagos State Government has issued an urgent appeal to address the growing threat of flooding, emphasizing the need for robust flood defenses and a collective commitment to sustainable environmental practices. The state faces a critical juncture as rising sea levels and flooding become more imminent.

In a statement on X.com on Thursday, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, stressed the importance of preparing for climate change. He stated, “Climate change is here, and the water is at our doors. Cities worldwide, from Mumbai to Miami, Dubai to Dublin, Argentina to Australia, and Toronto to Texas, are facing a new reality of ferocious flash floods and towering tsunamis.”

Wahab underscored the scientific evidence of global warming, which is causing erratic weather patterns and rising sea levels. This results in heavier rainfall, stronger storms, and increased threats to coastal communities. He noted recent incidents of neighborhoods submerged in water and the desperate struggles against powerful currents.

“We’ve seen it recently,” he said, referring to the heart-wrenching images of flooded neighborhoods. “Here in Lagos, we stand at a crossroads. As a vibrant city and a center of commerce and culture, we are also vulnerable. The rising sea level threatens our very foundation.”

The commissioner called for immediate action to protect the state’s infrastructure, homes, and people, stressing that global warming is a reality that requires collective efforts. “Now is the time to act. We need robust flood defenses and a collective commitment to sustainable environmental practices. We must protect our infrastructure, our homes, and most importantly, our people. Global warming is real. Ensure you keep your environment clean at all times and avoid any activity that can obstruct the free flow of water.”
