Security Operatives Raid NLC Headquarters, Seize Documents

Heavily armed security forces raided the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) headquarters in Abuja on Thursday evening, the union reported. According to the NLC, the operatives, who arrived at Labour House around 8:30 pm, broke into the building and searched the bookshop on the 2nd floor, seizing hundreds of books and publications.

Benson Upah, the NLC’s Head of Media and Public Relations, stated that the security personnel claimed they were searching for seditious materials related to the #EndBadGovernance protests. The NLC has not yet been able to fully assess what was taken during the raid, which occurred six days after the protests began.

The NLC condemned the raid, calling it a significant decline in the conduct of security operations in Nigeria. The union demanded the immediate withdrawal of the security forces from its premises, emphasizing that the operatives had no legal warrant for the invasion, which took place late at night. The NLC noted that even during the darkest periods of military rule, its secretariats were never subjected to such treatment.

In a press release, the NLC highlighted that just earlier in the day, its National Executive Council had condemned the excessive force used by security agents against protesters across the country and the mass arrests of perceived protest leaders. The council also expressed concern over the reckless use of the term "treason" to describe the protests. The raid on Labour House later that night was unexpected.

The NLC warned that this incident signals a dangerous erosion of democratic rights, including freedom of speech and peaceful protest, and called on the international community to take note of Nigeria's slide toward becoming a police state. The union also expressed fears that the situation could worsen, especially given recent experiences of violent state repression, including an attempted assassination of the NLC President.

As a precaution, the NLC has instructed its staff to stay away from Labour House until it can ensure that no incriminating materials or harmful substances were planted by the security forces. The union is demanding an international investigation into the raid and has called for the immediate return of all seized materials. If the harassment continues, the NLC warned it may call on its members to stay home until their safety is guaranteed.

August 7, 2024 Activist-Lawyer Adesina Ogunlana Dies After 60th Birthday

Activist-Lawyer Adesina Ogunlana Dies After 60th Birthday

The legal community and civic space in Nigeria were shrouded in grief on Wednesday with the heartbreaking news of the passing of one of its most steadfast members, Adesina Ogunlana. Known as Serubawon (a Yoruba term meaning 'scare them' or 'frighten the oppressors'), Ogunlana has embarked on his final journey—not to the courtroom to defend the helpless or to protest grounds to challenge anti-people policies, but to the world beyond.

Just days after friends and colleagues celebrated his 60th birthday with a lecture in late July, Ogunlana succumbed to death. Renowned for his pro-people stance, Ogunlana was a prominent figure in many defining protests in Nigeria, including Occupy Nigeria in January 2012, the 2020 #EndSARS rallies, and the recent #EndBadGovernance nationwide protests. He also served as the lawyer for #EndSARS petitioners at the panel investigating the Lekki Tollgate incident in Lagos.

Ogunlana expertly blended activism with his legal practice, making a significant impact in the civic space. His absence will be profoundly felt.

In a statement, Akorede Lawal, a spokesman for the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), expressed deep sorrow over Ogunlana’s passing. Ogunlana, who served as the chairman of the Ikeja Branch of the NBA from 2016 to 2018, led the protest against the increase in the Land Use Charge by the Lagos State Government in 2018, bringing a renewed sense of activism to the Bar.

“At a time when citizens look to conscientious members of the legal profession for direction, the loss of Adesina Ogunlana is monumental. He was an activist in every sense of the word,” said Lawal. Ogunlana had actively participated in the Nationwide Hunger Protest in Lagos just last week.

Known for his unwavering commitment to the rule of law, the effective administration of justice, and the protection of human rights, Ogunlana’s absence will be keenly felt in the legal profession. The NBA extends its deepest condolences to his grieving family.

Friends and associates have taken to social media to share tributes and recount the legendary exploits of Ogunlana, whose fighting spirit inspired many in the civic space. Just a few weeks ago, he was a guest on our Saturday political show "Talk Radio" with Emmanuel Ujiadughele.

Army: Soldier Who Shot Teenage Protester Arrested

The Nigerian Army has announced the arrest of the soldier who shot and killed a teenage protester in Zaria, Kaduna State. The incident occurred on Tuesday around 9 am when the soldier, part of a patrol team in Samaru, Zaria, opened fire on Isma’il Muhammad, a recent secondary school graduate, at his home on Sarkin Pawa Street.

Samaru is home to many staff and students of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. According to Muhammad's mother, Zainab Sani, he was playing with friends and his brother in front of their house when soldiers approached. Seeing one soldier aiming his gun at them, the children ran inside and closed the gate.

Major General M.L.D. Saraso, GOC 1 Division, visited Muhammad's family to express condolences and assured the community of a thorough investigation. He asked anyone with substantial evidence to come forward and described the incident as "unfortunate," urging the community to remain peaceful and law-abiding.

In a statement on Wednesday, Army Spokesperson Onyema Nwachukwu explained that the soldiers were enforcing a 24-hour curfew imposed on Kaduna and Zaria following violence during the #EndBadGovernance protests. The soldiers encountered hoodlums throwing stones and burning tires despite the curfew. In an attempt to disperse the crowd, a soldier fired a warning shot that accidentally killed Muhammad.
