NLC President Ajaero Declines Police Invitation Cites Reasons

Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has declined the police invitation, citing prior commitments. He communicated his decision through a letter from his lawyers, Falana and Falana Chambers.

The police had summoned Ajaero over allegations of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime. However, Ajaero's legal team has stated that the invitation was received too late for him to attend the scheduled meeting on August 20. The letter explained that Ajaero had a prior engagement that could not be rescheduled.

The letter to the Inspector General of Police, signed by Samuel Ogala, noted, "We are instructed to inform you that Ajaero is unable to honor your invitation on Tuesday, August 20, as it was received only yesterday. He has a pre-existing engagement."

Ajaero has proposed a new date to meet with the police: Wednesday, August 29, 2024.

Additionally, the letter requested detailed information about the specific allegations against Ajaero, in accordance with Section 36 of the Constitution of Nigeria.

The letter concluded with a request for a response to the proposed new date and the details of the charges.

NLC Threatens Nationwide Shutdown If Ajaero Is Arrested Or Detained

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has vowed to shut down the nation if its president, Joe Ajaero, is detained or arrested by the police. This decision was made during an emergency National Executive Council meeting held on Tuesday in Abuja, with some executives participating virtually.

The meeting, which started at 8:30 a.m., concluded with a resolution that Ajaero should comply with the police invitation. The police had summoned Ajaero for an "interview" concerning allegations of "criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime."

The invitation dated August 19, 2024, and signed by ACP Adamu Mu’azu on behalf of the Commissioner of Police Intelligence, stated that Ajaero's name had come up in ongoing investigations related to these charges. Ajaero was directed to report to the IRT Complex at Abattoir by Guzape Junction on Tuesday, August 20, at 10 a.m. The letter also warned that a warrant for his arrest would be issued if he failed to appear.

This development follows a July 7 raid by security agents on the NLC national secretariat in Abuja. According to NLC spokesperson Benson Upah, operatives from the Nigeria Police Force, along with individuals in black t-shirts and plainclothes, raided the building at around 8:30 p.m., arresting security guards and seizing keys to offices on the second floor.

The police later claimed responsibility for the raid, stating it was part of an operation to uncover incriminating documents related to an international "subversive" figure deemed a threat to Nigeria's democracy.

The NLC has since rejected the police's explanation for the raid, demanding the release of its arrested members and the return of seized documents. The union also criticized government efforts to interfere with its internal affairs, including a proposed reduction in the tenure of trade union leaders.

The Nigerian Police Force has summoned Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), for an investigation over serious allegations, including terrorism financing, treasonable felony, cybercrime, and related offences.

The invitation was detailed in a letter dated August 19, 2024, signed by ACP Adamu Muazu on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence Response Team. The letter warned that failure to comply with the invitation would result in the issuance of a warrant for Ajaero's arrest.

The letter stated: "This office is investigating a case of Criminal Conspiracy, Terrorism Financing, Treasonable Felony, Subversion, and Cybercrime in which you have been implicated. You are required to report for an interview on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at 10:00 AM, at Old Abattoir by Guzape Junction, Abuja. Failure to honor this letter will compel this office to issue a warrant for your arrest."

In response, Benson Upah, NLC’s Head of Communications and Corporate Affairs, suggested that this invitation might be connected to the recent police raid on the union's headquarters. Upah remarked, "Clearly, the last has not been heard about the raid on the Nigeria Labour Congress headquarters."

He added that prior to the raid, the NLC had urged the government to engage in dialogue with the protest organizers, clarifying that the union was not involved in the protest. The NLC had also criticized the police for the high casualty rate during the protests and demanded an apology from both the police and the government.

At a recent press conference, the NLC had warned that if anything happened to its leadership or members, the police should be held responsible. Upah concluded with a question circulating among observers: "Who wants Joe Ajaero out of circulation?"

Fuel Scarcity: “No Supply Anywhere” IPMAN Holds NNPCL Responsible

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) claims its members aren't receiving enough Premium Motor Spirit from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) amidst the ongoing fuel scarcity. With over 3,000 members controlling most of the filling stations nationwide, IPMAN says NNPCL, the sole importer of petroleum products, has failed to supply adequate fuel for the past three years.

Engr. Shina Amoo, Chairman of IPMAN's Ore Depot, stated that there is virtually "no supply anywhere," and the available fuel isn't well-distributed. Independent marketers, who primarily operate in rural and urban areas, are being sidelined in supply distribution. Amoo explained that out of 50 petrol stations, only a handful have fuel, which they purchase at inflated prices between ₦750 and ₦850 per liter from private depots.

He also highlighted the lengthy and bureaucratic process of obtaining fuel directly from NNPCL, which can take up to five months, leading marketers to buy from private depots instead. Amoo criticized the NNPCL's distribution pattern, claiming it favors other marketers over IPMAN. He pointed out that the main issues stem from the fuel subsidy and NNPCL's monopoly as the sole importer. Amoo believes that eliminating corruption in the downstream sector could help reduce fuel prices.
