Federal Government Donates ₦500 Million to Nigerian Legion

The Federal Government has donated ₦500 million to the Nigerian Legion in support of veterans and their families. This announcement was made by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, during the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration Emblem and Appeal Fund Launch held at the State House, Abuja.

In a statement on Tuesday, Presidential Spokesman Bayo Onanuga relayed President Bola Tinubu’s commendation for the Nigerian Armed Forces' commitment to addressing the nation’s security challenges. President Tinubu highlighted the crucial role of security in fostering national peace and development. “No matter what economic theory we propagate or postulate, if there is no security, we cannot promote peace and development,” he stated, expressing gratitude to the Armed Forces for their unwavering dedication.

Tinubu reaffirmed that supporting the welfare of security personnel would remain a top priority for his administration, honoring those who have paid the ultimate price for Nigeria’s unity and stability. “We came today to remember our fallen heroes, men, and women who have sacrificed their lives for this country’s unity, stability, and progress. We are committed to their values, principles, and the unity of this country as we pass on a banner without stain to the next generation,” he said.

The Minister of Defence, Abubakar Badaru, expressed appreciation for Tinubu’s commitment to supporting the welfare of active-duty, retired, and fallen soldiers, along with their families. Badaru emphasized that the emblem launch serves as both a symbol of remembrance and a call to action. “Unveiling this emblem serves as a beacon of hope and a reminder of our collective responsibility to uplift our Armed Forces and their families,” he said, explaining that the Appeal Fund will support essential welfare programs for veterans, including healthcare, education, and financial aid.

Dignitaries at the event included Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, members of the Federal Executive Council, service chiefs, heads of security and paramilitary agencies, and representatives of the Nigerian Legion.

NCAA Clarifies Airworthiness of Crashed Port Harcourt Helicopter

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has clarified that the helicopter with registration 5N-BQG, which crashed in Port Harcourt last week, was indeed airworthy, contrary to claims in recent reports.

In a statement, NCAA Director General Chris Najomo refuted an online report suggesting that the helicopter, which was operated by East Wind Aviation for the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), had been scrapped in 2018. Najomo emphasized that the aircraft met all airworthiness requirements at the time of the crash.

The incident occurred on Thursday when the helicopter, en route from Port Harcourt Military Base (DNPM) to the FPSO-NUIMS ANTAN oil rig, crashed into waterways near the Rivers State capital at 11:22 a.m. Tragically, four bodies have been recovered from the eight passengers on board.

Addressing claims made by an online platform, Najomo confirmed that while the helicopter was first registered in 2004 under Aero Contractors as 5N-BGN and later deregistered to Canada in 2009, it was not scrapped in 2018. “The report falsely implied that the helicopter’s registration was canceled in 2018 after being scrapped and raised questions about its re-registration as 5N-BQG,” Najomo clarified.

NCAA continues its investigation to uncover the precise details surrounding the incident, maintaining that the helicopter’s airworthiness was in good standing prior to the crash.

Dangote: Fuel Queues Will Vanish if Marketers Support Us

Aliko Dangote, President and Chief Executive of Dangote Group, provided insights on how to address the persistent fuel queues in Nigeria during a briefing with State House reporters in Abuja on Tuesday. He urged the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and fuel marketers to cease importing fuel, expressing confidence that his refinery could resolve the ongoing issue.

Dangote estimated the country's daily fuel consumption at approximately 30-32 million liters, indicating that his refinery could begin production as soon as next week. "As of today, we have 500 million liters stored in our tanks. Even without production or imports, this supply could sustain the country for over 12 days," he stated.

“We are fully prepared and ready to supply 30 million liters per day, and we are ramping up our operations,” he added. He encouraged the NNPCL and marketers to stop their imports and instead collect fuel from his refinery. "Keeping half a billion liters in our tanks incurs costs. I could charge a 32% interest on that amount daily, which is a significant loss. If they come to collect, we can eliminate queues at filling stations," he emphasized.

This announcement comes just weeks after the federal government implemented a policy to sell crude oil to the Dangote Refinery in naira instead of U.S. dollars. The government stated that this move aims to stabilize domestic fuel prices and strengthen Nigeria's currency by reducing the reliance on dollars for crude oil transactions.
