Nigerian Institute Of Chartered Arbitrators Expresses Worry Over Recent Ruling Of Uk Court Against The Federal Government

The Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitrators has expressed worry over the recent ruling by Justice BUTCHER of the UK Commercial Court that an Irish company P&ID can seize Nigeria’s assets worth $9 billion.

Already, the Federal Government has directed its Solicitor-General, DAYO APATA to appeal the ruling and seek a stay of execution.

Nigeria and the Irish company had been at legal battle over a failed gas supply agreement entered into about twenty years ago with the Nigerian government.

Registrar of the Institute, SHOLA OSHODI-JOHN, said they ready to assist government in seeking redress on the award.

P&ID and Nigeria entered into a 20-year Gas and Supply Processing Agreement to build a state-of-the-art gas processing facility in Calabar but the Federal Government was adjudged to have failed to keep to its side of the bargain.

Socio-Economic Rights And Accountability Project Happy With Move By The Efcc to Probe Past Governments

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project is happy with the move by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to probe past governments, starting with that of former president OLUSEGUN OBASANJO on the $16 billion spent on power project.

The EFCC said it is an opportunity for the anti-graft agency to show that former heads of state and other high-ranking public officials are not immune from investigation and prosecution for allegations of grand corruption in Nigeria.

In a statement by its Deputy Director KOLAWOLE OLUWADARE, SERAP says theprobe is something which they have consistently called for.

He said Nigerians have for long been denied justice and opportunity to get to the bottom of why they continue to pay the price for corruption in the electricity sector–staying in darkness, but still made to pay crazy electricity bills.

He was quoted as saying he personally signed for and collected the documents on behalf of the President.

The UK-based examination body oversaw the conduct of final year secondary school examination in Nigeria and placement into foreign universities in the 1960s.
