SUPREME COURT FIXES 30TH OF OCTOBER TO HEAR ATIKU’S APPEAL.

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has fixed Wednesday, the 30th of October, to hear an appeal filed by Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party and Peter Obi, his running mate.

The opposition party is challenging the judgment of the presidential election tribunal, which affirmed the election of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The duo had formally filed their 66 grounds of appeal against the judgment of the presidential election petition tribunal in September.

This is coming one day after Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the PDP, and his legal team expressed worries over the delay in naming justices to preside over their appeal.

POLICE FREE 108 INMATES FROM ILLEGAL DETENTION CAMP IN ILORIN, KWARA STATE.

The Kwara State Police Command has discovered an illegal rehabilitation centre in GaaIdiroko, Odota, Ilorin.

 

No fewer than 108 victims were rescued from the detention camp; they comprise 103 males and five females with many children.

Speaking with newsmen, the State Commissioner of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, confirmed that 108 victims were rescued from the camp based on intelligence reports.

 

The owner of the rehabilitation camp, Abdulraheem Owotutu, who hailed from Ila-Orangun in Osun State, said some of the victims were brought to the centre by their parents.

The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has called for financial autonomy for States Independent Electoral Commissions SIECs, saying they cannot be truly independent if they have to depend on the magnanimity of states chief executives to discharge their mandates.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu made the call in Abuja during a meeting of the Commission with the Forum of State Independent Electoral Commissions of Nigeria FOSIECON.

Professor Yakubu urged the SIECs to ensure timely conduct of free and credible councils’ elections across the country.

President Muhammadu Buhari says fresh energy will be injected into Nigeria-Russia relations to bolster an age-long relationship that has been mutually rewarding and promising.

He called for a stronger partnership that is humane, inclusive and diversified.

President BUHARI made the remark on Thursday, in his speech at the second plenary of the Russia-Africa Summit, where more than 40 leaders are participating.

The President expressed the hope that the mutual relationship will go beyond trade and business.
