DSS Takes Over SERAP Abuja Office

Officers from the Department of State Services (DSS) have taken control of the Abuja office of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), an action the organization has labeled as an “unlawful occupation.”

In a statement shared on SERAP’s X handle on Monday, the group reported that DSS officers are insisting on meeting with the organization’s directors. SERAP called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene, urging him to take immediate action.

“President Tinubu must immediately direct the DSS to cease the harassment, intimidation, and violation of the rights of Nigerians,” the statement read.

This development comes just 24 hours after SERAP called on President Tinubu to use his authority to instruct the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited to reverse the controversial and potentially unconstitutional hike in the pump price of petrol at its retail outlets.Top of Form

DSS Detains NLC President Joe Ajaero

The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested and detained Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

Benson Upah, Head of Information for the NLC, confirmed the arrest, stating that Ajaero was scheduled to attend the Trade Union Congress conference in London, which began the same day. The union has not been informed of Ajaero's current location, but they received a message from him confirming that the DSS had detained him.

In a subsequent statement, the NLC declared: "Comrade Ajaero has been detained without any legal warrant. Joe Ajaero is not a fugitive, and his detention is a clear act of lawlessness and intimidation. Restricting a lawful citizen's freedom is an affront to our democratic and natural rights as workers and citizens."

Ajaero’s arrest follows police summons he answered on August 28. He was released the following day after appearing before law enforcement. The initial summons from the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence Response Team (IRT), was related to allegations of "criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime."

A second police invitation requested that Ajaero and NLC Secretary General Emmanuel Ugboaja appear for questioning regarding allegations of criminal intimidation, public disturbance, and malicious damage.

Accompanied by human rights lawyer Femi Falana and others, Ajaero complied with the police invitation at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. Afterward, he returned to the NLC headquarters, where he addressed a crowd of union members who had gathered in solidarity. Ajaero affirmed that the labour movement remains the most patriotic organization in Nigeria and vowed that the union would not compromise its values, regardless of any challenges.

The police invitation sparked controversy, with the NLC and other unions accusing the government of attempting to intimidate labour leaders. This followed a police raid on the NLC national secretariat in Abuja.

Imposter NNPC Director in EFCC Custody for N100M Fraud

The Kaduna Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has brought Ibrahim Shuaibu before Justice Darius Khobo of the Kaduna State High Court, facing charges of fraud.

According to a statement released on Monday via the EFCC’s X.com handle, Shuaibu is being prosecuted on seven counts, including criminal breach of trust, impersonation, and obtaining money under false pretenses, totaling N100 million.

One of the charges states: “That you, Nuhu Ibrahim Shuaibu (a.k.a Ishaku Abdulrazak) and Ilya Garba (now deceased) conspired in 2017 in Kaduna to commit an illegal act by obtaining money under false pretenses, in violation of Section 8(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006, punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.”

Another charge reads: “That you, Nuhu Ibrahim Shuaibu (a.k.a Ishaku Abdulrazak), in 2018 at Kaduna, fraudulently obtained N47,050,000 from Faisal Safiyanu by falsely claiming you would supply petroleum products, an act you knew was deceitful, in violation of Section 1(1)(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006, punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.”

Shuaibu pleaded "not guilty" to all charges, prompting the prosecution counsel, M. Lawal, to request a trial date. Shuaibu’s lawyer, AbdulKareem Audu, did not file a bail application, leading Justice Khobo to order Shuaibu’s detention in EFCC custody.

Shuaibu’s legal troubles began in 2017 when he falsely claimed to be the Group Executive Director of NNPC and promised to provide over 2,000 liters of petroleum products. After receiving payments in installments, Shuaibu failed to deliver the products or refund the money.

DSS Arrests NLC President Joe Ajaero

The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero. According to the NLC, Ajaero was detained at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Monday while en route to the United Kingdom for an official assignment.

The Head of Information for the NLC, Mr. Benson Upah, confirmed the arrest. Ajaero was scheduled to attend the Trade Union Congress conference in London, which starts today.

Upah stated that the union is unaware of Ajaero's current location but received a message from him indicating that the DSS was responsible for his arrest.

This incident comes about a week after Ajaero responded to a police invitation related to an investigation into terrorism financing.
