Former Irish Rugby Centre Brendan Mullin Accused of Stealing Over €500,000

The former Ireland, British and Irish Lions rugby international Brendan Mullin has appeared in court after being charged with stealing more than €500,000 from Bank of Ireland.

The 57-year-old, of Stillorgan Road, Dublin, who won 55 caps for Ireland between 1984 and 1995, appeared before Dublin District Court.

It followed an investigation by the Garda (Irish police) National Economic Crime Bureau.

Mr Mullin faces nine counts of stealing €578,000 (£495,937) from Bank of Ireland between 2011 and 2013.

The former managing director of Bank of Ireland private banking is accused of deceiving two people to sign a payment instruction to make a gain for himself or cause a loss to another.

He was also charged with five counts of false accounting.

A detective told the court that Mr Mullin made no comment when informed of the charges he faced.

Mr Mullin was released on bail of his own bond of €10,000 (£8,584) and agreed to surrender his passport.

He is due back in court on 11 November.

Minamino Gets Double In Liverpool Win Over Norwich In EFL Cup

Takumi Minamino netted twice as Liverpool got the better of fellow Premier League side Norwich City at Carrow Road to reach the Carabao Cup fourth round.

Both managers made nine changes from the weekend’s Premier League matches, with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp handing debuts to teenagers Kaide Gordon and Conor Bradley from the start – plus Tyler Morton as a substitute.

The visitors led after four minutes as Minamino produced a sharp turn and finish from Divock Origi’s knockdown.

Norwich improved as the opening period wore on but Adam Idah shot directly at Kelleher and Tzolis failed to deliver from the penalty spot after Bradley had fouled Dimitris Giannoulis.

Caoimhin Kelleher denied Norwich an equaliser before half-time, saving Christos Tzolis’ penalty with his foot.

Origi headed in Konstantinos Tsimikas’ cross five minutes after the break and Minamino slotted in a late third.

PSG Coach Pochettino Defends Messi Substitution, Citing A Knee Injury

Paris St-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino has revealed an injury was the reason he substituted Lionel Messi during Sunday’s win over Lyon.

Messi appeared unhappy while being replaced, but Pochettino said he had taken a knock to his left knee.

The 34-year-old will miss PSG’s trip to Metz on Wednesday and is a doubt for next week’s Champions League game against Manchester City.

Pochettino said he noticed “Leo was looking at his knee”.

“We are pleased with the way he played,” said the former Tottenham manager, who did not mention Messi’s injury following the game on Sunday.

“He played very well in the first half, and the only thing missing was a goal. He played for 76 minutes and, with all the information we had, we decided to take him off.

“Of course I understand the situation and I accept it as it is.”

The 2-1 win over Lyon was Messi’s third appearance for PSG since joining as a free agent after leaving Barcelona – and his first at the Parc des Princes.

Luis Suarez Scores Brace as Atletico Came from Behind to Defeat Getafe

Luis Suarez scored a late brace as La Liga champions Atletico Madrid came from behind to defeat neighbours Getafe.

Getafe’s first goal against Atleti since 2011 came when Stefan Mitrovic’s header hit the post and went in off goalkeeper Jan Oblak’s hand.

That was the first time they had netted in 20 meetings with Atletico since Diego Simeone took charge.

But Carles Alena was sent off for Getafe and Suarez then scored twice as the visitors stayed unbeaten.

First he controlled Mario Hermoso’s pass before getting the ball on his left foot and firing home the equaliser. In the last minute he headed in Sime Vrsaljko’s cross.

Suarez, who had only scored once in his previous six games, said: “Every player at the top level has to learn to live with criticism, but what I do is never give in. I’ll never get beat down by criticism.

“Above all I’m happy because of the circumstances of the game and that we managed to turn the scoreline on its head after.

Atletico, with the win are one point ahead of Real Madrid, who have a game in hand, at the top of La Liga.
