February 17, 2022 Education Minister Adamu Insists ASUU Strike Not Fault of Federal Government, Says Negotiations Ongoing

Education Minister Adamu Insists ASUU Strike Not Fault of Federal Government, Says Negotiations Ongoing

The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities have traded blame over the four-week strike which the union began on Monday.

While briefing State House Correspondents after the Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by Vice-President YEMI OSINBAJO, the minister said he was surprised that the lecturers could decide to embark on industrial action amid renegotiations.

He said it is not the federal government’s fault if there has been no agreement after several negotiations between both parties.

Some university students, who have been affected by the ongoing strike ventilated their opinion on the industrial action embarked upon by ASUU.

But the President of ASUU, Prof essor EMMANUEL OSODEKE, faulted the minister insisting that the union visited him on Thursday last week and told him what would likely happen.

According to him, the minister did not mention the issue of negotiations when the union visited him.

In another vein, the Minister of Labour and Employment, CHRIS NGIGE, on his part, described the ongoing strike a “leave” following the failure of the union to notify his ministry before embarking on strike.

NGIGE also noted that the union failed in its agreement with the National Inter-religious Council headed by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji ABUBAKAR SA’AD; and the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev SAMSON AYOKUNLE, by failing to report to the committee before embarking on strike.

Liverpool Earn First Leg Advantage Over Inter Milan

Liverpool took a huge step towards the Champions League quarter-finals after scoring two late goals against Inter Milan in the San Siro.

The Reds looked set for a goalless draw in the first leg in Italy until Brazil forward Roberto Firmino got on the end of Andrew Robertson’s corner to head his side into the lead.

Mohamed Salah added a second with a deflected effort from inside the box which means Jurgen Klopp’s side take a sizeable advantage into the second leg at Anfield on 8 March.

Italian champions Inter hit the bar through Hakan Çalhanoglu and were on top for long periods of the second half before Firmino struck in the 75th minute.

Liverpool scored from their only two attempts on target and will be firm favourites to progress when the two sides meet in the deciding leg next month.

It was a particularly memorable night for midfielder Harvey Elliott, who became the youngest player ever to start a match in the competition for Liverpool at the age of 18 years and 318 days.

The only negative on an otherwise upbeat night for the Reds was an injury to Portugal forward Diogo Jota, who was replaced by goalscorer Firmino at the start of the second half after suffering an ankle injury.

February 17, 2022 Bayern Munich Held at Salzburg in Round Of 16 First Leg

Bayern Munich Held at Salzburg in Round Of 16 First Leg

Six-time winners Bayern Munich needed a late Kingsley Coman equaliser to avoid a shock last-16 first-leg defeat at an impressive Red Bull Salzburg.

Winger Coman ghosted in at the far post in the 90th minute and converted following Thomas Muller’s flick.

Salzburg substitute Chukwubuike Adamu had netted the opener with a delightful curling finish into the corner.

The hosts could have nicked a second at 1-0, but Karim Adeyemi’s shot was saved and Adamu’s follow-up was blocked.

The vibrant home side were appearing in the knockout stage of the Champions League for the first time, but did not look out of place against an often flat Bayern side.

The Bundesliga champions suffered a stunning 4-2 home loss against Bochum at the weekend and avoided back-to-back defeats for the first time since 2019.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side cruised through the group stage by winning all six games, but found it difficult to deal with the youthfulness and pace of their opponents.

Salzburg, fielding the youngest average starting side in the Champions League since Ajax in 2003, took the lead on 21 minutes through Adamu’s lovely effort.

Brenden Aaronson cut onto his left and forced a smart save from Sven Ulreich, while Germany international Adeyemi’s effort was straight at the Bayern understudy keeper.

Bayern improved in the second half and Leroy Sane was denied by Philipp Kohn’s sharp save, before Frenchman Coman drew his side level late on.

February 17, 2022 Champions Atletico Madrid Stunned by Bottom Side Levante

Champions Atletico Madrid Stunned by Bottom Side Levante

Atletico Madrid’s poor form continued as the La Liga champions were beaten by bottom club Levante on Wednesday.

Gonzalo Melero scored the only goal of the game in the second half, driving home from the middle of the box.

Angel Correa thought he had equalised in stoppage time with a stunning overhead kick, but it was ruled out for a foul.

Mickael Malsa then almost added a spectacular second for Levante but his shot from the halfway line hit the bar.

There was more drama to come in the final seconds when Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak headed wide of the post from a set-piece.

The defeat was Atletico’s sixth in 10 league matches and leaves them fifth, 15 points behind leaders Real Madrid.

Diego Simeone’s side will now hope for a morale-boosting result at Osasuna on Saturday before they host Manchester United in a Champions League last-16 first-leg game next Wednesday.
