Ukraine Attack: Hundreds arrested in Anti-war Protests in Russia

Russian authorities have warned anti-war sympathizers from gathering for protests after President Vladimir Putin launched an invasion of Ukraine.

This comes as at least 1,000 people have been detained in anti-war protests across Moscow.

The Investigative Committee, a government body that investigates major crimes, warned Russians of legal repercussions for joining unsanctioned protests related to “the tense foreign political situation.”

It said it was responding to social media calls to protest against Putin’s decision to attack Ukraine.

Russia has strict protest laws and demonstrations often end in mass arrests.

The Nigeria’s House of Representatives has ordered for immediate evacuation of Nigerians in Ukraine.

The House members were unanimous in their recognition of lives of Nigerians staying in Ukraine, adding that the situation in Ukraine at the moment called for a proactive action from the Federal Government.

Zverev Handed Maximum Fine for Attacking Umpire’s Chair

Alexander Zverev has been fined $40,000 (£30,000) and made to forfeit more than $30,000 in prize money after being thrown out of the Mexican Open for attacking the umpire’s chair.

The world number three struck the umpire’s chair several times with his racquet, leading to the sanctions.
He was fined $20,000 each for verbal abuse and unsportsmanlike conduct – the maximum amount the ATP can impose.
Zverev still faces the threat of a ban as the ATP investigate further.

Zverev apologised for the attack after he and Marcelo Melo lost their doubles match to Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara on Wednesday, calling his behaviour “unacceptable”.

On Thursday, Rafael Nadal said Zverev’s punishment was “deserved”.

As well as the fines and loss of prize money, the German has been made to forfeit all ATP rankings points from the tournament in Acapulco, where he was defending champion in the singles event.
