OPEC Secretary-General, Mohammad Barkindo, To Be Buried Today

The incoming Secretary-General of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, (OPEC), Mr. Haitham Al-Ghais has mourned the death of Mohammed Sanusi Barkindo.

In the Twitter handle of the Organization on Wednesday, Mrs Al-Ghais posted that Barkindo has led the OPEC during extremely turbulent times for the global oil market.

“Barkimdo’s remarkable role and valuable contributions, along with our Organization’s long history of dialogue and cooperation, put us in a strong position to continue supporting stability and balance in the global oil market”, Al-Ghais wrote.

The incoming Secretary-General then extended his deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, loved ones and his home country, Nigeria, as well as the entire OPEC Family.

The body of late Mohammed Sanusi Barkindo has been committed to mother earth in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, amidst tears.

FCT Minister, Muhammad Musa Bello led the Federal Government delegation to the funeral.

Kuje Prison Attack: Over 800 Inmates Escape, Four Killed – NCOS

Authorities of the Nigerian Correctional Service have said over 800 inmates escaped the Kuje Prison following an attack by suspected Boko Haram Terrorists.

According to a statement by the Chief Superintendent of Corrections, Umar Abubakar, a total of 879 inmates escaped from the facility.

Abubakar further stated that “443 of the escapees have been recaptured while 551 inmates are currently in custody, and 443 inmates are still at large,”

Reeling out more information regarding the incident, the Corrections Officer disclosed that four inmates died in the chaos while 16 others sustained various degree of injuries and are being treated at the moment.

He, however, emphasized that efforts are ongoing to recapture all fleeing inmates.

Regarding the welfare of the embattled police officer, DCP Abba Kyari and other VIPs held in the facility, Abubakar said these individuals did not escape during Tuesday’s attack.

ISWAP Claims Responsibility For Attack On Kuje Prison As PDP Blames APC For Complicity

The Islamic State in West Africa Province, ISWAP has claimed responsibility for Tuesday’s attack on the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje, Abuja.

This was disclosed on Wednesday in a statement written in Arabic shared via A’maq Agency, a news channel run by the Islamic State.

In a footage last night, the insurgents could be heard rejoicing after breaching the facility and setting some vehicles on fire.

Tens of fighters were seen marching in groups while vehicles and building were on fire in the 38 seconds video as they stormed the government establishment with bombs, grenades and assault weapons.

While authorities linked the attack to terrorists, a total of 64 Boko Haram fighters held at the centre for their roles in the insurgency in the North East were unaccounted for following the incident.

President Buhari Says He Is Disappointed with Intelligence System Over Kuje Prisons Attack After Visit to Facility

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed disappointment with the intelligence system at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje, Abuja.

The President, who spent about 30 minutes when he visited the facility attacked by terrorists on Tuesday night, angrily said, how can terrorists organize, have weapons, attack a security installation and get away with it?”

Upon arrival, he was briefed about the attack by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Shuaib Belgore and the Controller General of Nigerian Correctional Service, Haliru Nababa.

The President who was accompanied by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, and the Chief of Staff to the President, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, said it is surprising that none of the 63 terrorists are accounted for, and at the end of the visit, he said he is expecting “a comprehensive report” on the incident.

The president later departed for Dakar, Senegal.
