Southampton Request Dean And Mason Not To Officiate Matches

Southampton have requested referee Mike Dean does not officiate their upcoming fixtures and will appeal against the red card shown to defender Jan Bednarek in their 9-0 loss to Manchester United.

Saints also do not want Lee Mason, who was the fourth official at Old Trafford, to officiate their games.

Mason was the referee in Saints' controversial defeat by Aston Villa.

Fellow Premier League side Arsenal will appeal against defender David Luiz's dismissal in Tuesday's loss to Wolves.

Bednarek was the second player to be sent off for Ralph Hasenhuttl's side when he brought down Anthony Martial and conceded a penalty in the 86th minute.

Referee Dean initially only awarded a spot-kick to Manchester United but dismissed Bednarek after being instructed to watch replays of the incident on the pitchside monitor by video assistant referee (VAR) Graham Scott.

Poland centre-back Bednarek, 24, claimed that "Martial said it's not a foul" as he left the pitch, before the hosts went on to secure a record-equaling Premier League win.

Against Aston Villa on Saturday, Stuart Armstrong's effort struck Matty Cash on the arm, however VAR Dean did not instruct on-field referee Mason to award a penalty as he decided the ball had deflected off the defender's leg first.

Premier League clubs are unable to officially request that certain referees do not take charge of their games but it is understood that Professional Game Match Officials Limited will consider a number of factors when making match appointments.

DSS Raises Alarm Over Plans By Some Persons To Incite Religious Violence

The Department of State Services (DSS) has once again raised alarm over plans by some elements to incite ethnic and religious violence across the country.

The Public Relations Officer, DSS National Headquarters, Abuja, Dr Peter Afunanya, in a statement released today February 3, said the latest developments indicates desperate efforts by these groups to subvert public order. He warned such elements to desist or face the wrath of the law and assured they will take necessary steps to ensure the safety of lives and property of the citizenry.

“The Department of State Services (DSS) hereby reminds the public of its earlier warnings about plans by persons and groups to exploit some fault lines to cause ethno-religious violence in parts of the country.

Latest developments indicate desperate efforts by these groups to subvert public order. In this regard, they have continued to resort to inciting, unguarded and divisive statements and acts. The objective is to pit citizens against one another in order to apparently inflame the embers of tribal and religious discords.

For the umpteenth time, the Service strongly warns these elements to desist forthwith from their (planned) nefarious acts or face the full wraths of the law. However, the DSS will, in collaboration with other security and law enforcement agencies, take necessary steps to ensure the safety of lives and property of the citizenry. ”the statement read

The Service had on January 11, 2021, raised an alert over plans by some persons, working with external forces to incite religious violence across the country. The Service had said targeted States include Sokoto, Kano, Kaduna, Plateau, Rivers, Oyo, Lagos and those in the South East.

Ekiti Gov’t Withdraws Sponsorship Of Pilgrims To Mecca, Jerusalem

The Ekiti State Government has advocated more private sponsorship of pilgrims to Mecca and Jerusalem, following government’s withdrawal from bankrolling the activity, according to remarks by the Deputy Governor, Chief Bisi Egbeyemi.

Speaking on Tuesday, at a meeting with members of the State Muslims Pilgrims Welfare Board, led by its Chairman, Alhaji Babatunde Onipede, in Ado-Ekiti, Egbeyemi noted that both the federal and state governments had stopped sponsoring pilgrims on holy pilgrimages, to save funds for development purposes.

He told the board members, who visited him to familiarize themselves with his office, which supervises the Board in the state, that individuals interested in performing pilgrimage should do so through private savings, in view of the government’s withdrawal of sponsorship.

“Both the Federal Government and the State Government have said they will not spend their money on pilgrimages again, and that is why there was no budgetary allocation to it.

“Anybody wishing to perform his religious obligation of going to the Holy Lands must do so with his own personal savings, and that was what I told the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) when their executives made a similar request, because we must be fair to all,” Egbeyemi said.

The deputy governor, however, said that the board’s demand for office furniture and utility vehicles were legitimate and would be looked into accordingly, stressing that the state government was ready to assist the board in the performance of its statutory duties.

Egbeyemi also expressed satisfaction with the peaceful coexistence between Muslims and Christians in the state, which made them to live together as brothers and sisters.

Speaking earlier, Onipede expressed gratitude to Gov. Kayode Fayemi and the deputy governor, for finding him and other members of the board worthy of being appointed to serve.

Onipede revealed that the board was not run properly during the last administration, hence the need to draw the attention of the present administration to the situation for assistance.

“It was not functioning as a board during the Fayose administration; it was just lying fallow there and was not run like a board.

“In Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, we don’t have utility vehicles. Our utility vehicle in Saudi Arabia has been grounded since 2018,” he said.

Onipede said the board also needed furniture and more funds for the smooth running of the office, for quality service delivery.
